Really excited for the Carnegie International! This will be my first time going. I was too young to really appreciate what it was last time it happened.

I'm almost entirely convinced that social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat are negative atomizing forces and should be destroyed at this point.

Facebook doesn't need a news feed, It doesn't need to be a media platform, it could just be a good way to keep in touch with friends and family, and nothing more.

I'm specifically targeting social media platforms that are nothing more than places to abuse social capital and make people feel sorry for themselves. This is less of a problem on pseudo-anonymous platforms like Reddit. Although, an argument could still be made that sites like reddit harbour internet addictions.

I care more than you think, alienation is more than economics. Your despair is a product of the time, just like my own. The cure is learning to curtail some introverted tendencies--not all of them--and make freinds as terrible as that might sound. I know it can seem like hell, it takes years to find the right people, but once you do you won't ever want to let them go. At least then you'll have someone(s) to ride your dread out with.

I joined in 3013 under another name, No.

I think the big difference is there were more discussions and debates around future tech and the singularity.

there were alot of talks about the 2020s which would be interesting to dig up when we reach that time period

Daily reminder that you live in a flawed "democracy" and your votes don't matter. If you're in the bottom 90% of the income distribution you have very little or no influnce on policy or how your society is governed. You don't matter. The Democrats and the Republicans are both plutocrats--and tratiors--and the courts are acting the way they did during the Gilded Age. This is an empirical statement backed by political science, not opinion. Even the traitor remark is objectiv...

everything is. I wasn't even advocating socialism in particular, just general revolution to bring a functioning democracy back and to bust up monopolies. I don't get what your bloody problem is at all. All you're doing right now is reinforcing my conclusion that the alt-right aren't conservatives, they're anti-moralists who genuinely want to watch the world burn.

Right, so you can insult people and be a dick but when people actually respond to you in a serious way you just shut them down and refuse communication or valid response. And we're the ones "screaming" or acting immaturely.

Nationalism, anti-feminism and migrants oh my! I see you've all had a wonderful day. I do actually want to engage with you in a productive way at some point AWR, I just haven't had the opportunity to sit down and write something out yet, which is also why I've reserved my comments and stuck to questions thus far, my aim isn't to attack or delegitimize you. Hololab Champions makes me wish I was born 50 years from now so that my education growing up would have been more interactive and personalized. Seriously, if you have VR check it out, it's only the very basics of general chemistry but really demonstrates where we could with education.

I feel naive right now. Riding business class on Amtrak is a reasonable 30-40$ upcharge. Given that coach tickets are only 60-70$ that's roughly a 50% increase. Normally I wouldn't bother because coach Amtrak is super comfy, but I rode business once because coach was sold out. So here I am looking at flight costs from Pittsburgh to Tokyo and dreading the idea of being cramped for 16 hours only to find that business class on a good airline is anywhere from 8 to 15thousand dol...

That's crazy!, It has never really occurred to me to ever actually use business class or first class or whatever. Like I took one look and went "nah, that's a scam trying to play on my natural elitism", but I'd never realised prices were so crazy, this is also why I refuse to buy any apple products. :)

Migraines are caused by bad blood circulation , right ? So cold on one of those blood vessels ought to change it.

How does one sleep for more then 10 hour ? (even that it extremly hard , i usualy count 10 hour sleep if it adup to ten the several periods of sleep).

I slept for that long because being conscious was too painful. When I have a bad migraine, all head and eye movement hurts. My stomach gets upset and I throwup and all noise louder than a slight hum becomes painful, as does light. It's like sensory input goes from being useful to tormenting.

The pain feels like a tiny man is hitting the inside of my skull and face with a hammer if that makes sense at all. He only stops when I don't move and am in a noiseless dark room. My mom has atypical migraines, while I'm not diagnosed I'm showing the same symptoms she has, considering the pain is only ever on my right side and I also get ocular hallucinations with them sometimes.

Neoliberalism is terrible, my very good drawing professor who is an accomplished artist just got switched out for an adjunct with a graphic design masters. Whereas before his syllabus had us learning anatomy with the focus on volume of work alongside improvement and using canvas sized paper all while exposing us to famous artists and their styles every other week even though we're not expected to be able to draw like them. She has us doing primarily copywork, is grading by perfection and...

Being politically active is actually a civil thing to do. Activism, "evangelizing", and all this other political stuff is done in order to influence and create change. There is no demand but I understand the sentiment of not wanting one's views to be challenged. As humans we are so entrenched in our ways that anything that goes against our worldview is staunchly resisted. It is a cumbersome annoyance.

Also I would point out that the fates of "studies, jobs, friends, and family" are intricately intertwined with political action. I think it is rather more egregious to facetiously dismiss any attempt at civil discourse with childish disregard simply because we feel that people should leave us alone. It's a dangerous and unproductive attitude to take.

I don't understand how intelligent people can read and believe the works of Henry David Thoreau and also be anthroposophical wackos. Why does this place exist, it is a philosophical contradiction manifesting in physical space. This would be like if 19th century Christians also unironically loved Darwin's work and defended evolution while maintaining their creationist dogma. http://www.thoreaucollege.org/

Anyone reading both sets of works should have been able to spot the contradictions in trying to meld them, but then again, maybe I give cultists too much credit.

That's a good article about the "scientific nature" of anthroposophy.

Similar level of cognitive dissonance yeah. The thing that sucks about it is that outside of their cooky beliefs they have some decent ideas about higher education. That's how I even ran into them, I was going to apply to that school since it runs on the deep springs model, but then I found out what they believed and was really put off.

How did people learn science and mathematics before standardized textbooks? What are the foundational texts of the natural sciences and mathematics, how did people like Descartes learn? How did Newton learn over a century later?
