Asteroid Vesta is 'last of a kind' rock

Vesta is the only remaining example of the original objects that came together to form the rocky planets, like Earth and Mars, some 4.6 billion years ago.

SpaceX teams up with Bigelow on space station marketing

http://cosmiclog.msn...-marketing?lite

SpaceX and Bigelow Aerospace plan to meet with officials in Japan soon after this month's scheduled launch of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule, to kick off an international marketing effort for private-sector space stations.

The plan, laid out today in a jointly issued news release, calls for clients to go into orbit inside the Dragon and link up with Bigelow's BA 330 inflatable space habitat.

"Together we will provide unique opportunities to entities — whether nations or corporations — wishing to have crewed access to the space environment for extended periods," said SpaceX's president, Gwynne Shotwell. "I'm looking forward to working with Bigelow Aerospace and engaging with international customers."

Ancient Volcanic Blast Provides More Evidence of Water On Early Mars

http://www.scienceda...20504135732.htm

The atmosphere of Mars is less than 1 percent the density of Earth's. It's one of the reasons liquid water covers much of our planet but cannot exist on the Red Planet. As more research points toward the possibility of water on early Mars, scientists have increased their studies on the density of its atmosphere billions of years ago. It's not an easy task. In fact, it's very difficult to even determine Earth's atmospheric pressure from the same time frame.

Oh you've got to be kidding me.

[edit]

Actually, scratch that exasperation. It looks like it aborted itself for a pretty good reason. I suppose it's actually a good sign that their software is that capable.

And not even aborted at the last second. It seems lik it was the last half second!

That had to be the ultimate anticlimax for all their thousands of supporters who where following the mission... I saw the abort live on Sky News :(

I suppose, after 11 months of delays, another 3 days isn't too much to wait.

They sure know how do make a scene, last second :)
But yeah ultimately it's for the best. Sure it would be super cool if all went well, but it's much better than if it exploded just after launch.

Everyone in my town went down to the beach last Sunday to look at the eclipse. They had rows of telescopes set up along there for people to use.

And that is one amazing picture.

SpaceX In Orbit – Succesful Launch of Falcon 9 Rocket

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — The second time’s the charm for SpaceX. This morning at 3:44 a.m. EDT the company’s Falcon 9 rocket lifted off of Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral. After a faulty valve caused an aborted liftoff Saturday, today’s successful launch marks the third flight of the Falcon 9 rocket, the second flight of the Dragon capsule, and the first flight for a commercial spacecraft bound for the International Space Station.

Too bad it's photoshopped :(

Anyway - anyone else saw SpaceX launch live today? It was fantastic. And there were loads of people cheering when they succeeded, especially when solar panels went out and it was sure that all is OK.

EDIT: Oh, sorry I missed Will's post.
