Well I mean, this proves that we have achieved total photo-realism. Yes! In 2016, we have achieved photo-realistic graphics! Oh sure, it'll be refined in the coming years, but we've reached the point where even trained eyes cannot differentiate what is real from what is CG.

 

HOWEVER. As it currently stands, it is nigh-impossible to actually run these graphics in a video game. There's simply too much going on, too much to render at once. Computers today aren't powerful enough to do it. And even if they were, it costs a fortune to achieve such levels of realism.

 

And that isn't getting into the real issues. So we've reached the other side of the Uncanny Valley— whoopdedoo. Now we can create HD vistas on our computers. But that doesn't mean anything if game physics are still a decade behind graphics. You see this the most in sports games, where the characters rotate on the spot and pull off utterly unrealistic movements.

 

Everyone says that, visually, this stuff looks real. It's when it's actually put into motion that the illusion is broken.

 

Of course, there is a way to get around that: computers themselves. I've hypothesized that, in the near future, DeepMind will be used to create video games and enhance currently existing video games. It will be able to write code much more proficiently than any human, no matter how well trained, and it will be able to do so for pennies.

 

As I said in an old thread, in the next decade, we will be able to use artificially intelligent algorithms to recreate Grand Theft Auto 5 from scratch. It took Rockstar $265 million and 5 to 7 years to make. 10 years from now, an algorithm will be able to do it in a week and the only cost will be the price of the algorithm and the energy needed to run the computer.

 

When algorithms take over for game design, then we'll surpass photo-realism and achieve "total-realism"— realism in visuals and physics.

Description:
A cube of 8 million particles is thrown at the ground in normal speed, half speed and super slow motion.
This took about a month (yes, a month) to simulate in a virtual machine (so that I could do snapshotting to avoid starting over in case of PC crash) on 6 out of 12 threads of my 6-core i7-5820K @3.3GHz (since then overclocked to 4.2GHz). It then took about 1-2 weeks to render and a day to get the video edited and compressed properly for Gfycat and Youtube upload.
Including virtual machine hard drive (small installation of Kubuntu), daily snapshots and Blender project files (including particle simulation cache), this project used up about 700 GB space.

It says something that it's physics instead of the graphics that impress me. We already achieved photorealistic graphics, so reiterating that accomplishment is sort of like showing off the fourteenth successful nuclear reactor or the twentieth successful digital computer. Still awesome, but it's physics like this that offers genuine excitement.
