Universal ID cards have been an important miniature part of a lot of science fiction. Now, since people are getting closer together with Social Networks, could we see a smart ID card in the future? Could our phones turn into physical IDs?

This recent article: http://techcrunch.co...-in-our-future/ in Techcrunch about Facebook filing a patent for a type of "non-magnetically encoded device" has sparked my interest. With over 800 Million people on board, could our profile on Facebook become our National ID in the physical world as well as in cyberspace?

Last year, the Obama Administration went around shopping for such a system http://www.wired.com...comment-page-1/ deep in silicon valley and everybody whispered Facebook!

There was furore in the UK in recent years when the introduction of a national identity card was proposed and trialled. Eventually the whole thing was scrapped.

The problem with assigning this responsibility to social networking is one of legitimacy, isn’t it- not just in proving the user is who they say they are but in the fact they are under the control of private entities/corporations.

I think it's inevitable. Not sure what Facebook is up to but have you ever noticed that when you start your new smartphone for the first time you have to either log in via, your Apple ID, Google Account and Windows Live. Windows 8, and Chrome OS are officially connected to the cloud using your email address, I think Mac now is too. You HAVE to have a user name using these services to get access to your computer and your smartphone. I think in ten to twenty years we could see such a system be widespread. Quite probably through Facebook

Still don't understand how that's supposed to work though. I can have multiple google or windows live accounts (i.e. 2 google accounts, 3 windows accounts), using pretty much any identity I want, they would need to enforce sign ups to only allow a single account?
All right, brain. You don't like me and I don't like you, but let's just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.

Honestly I'd preffer biometric ID system.
