Obama unveils new strategy for 'leaner' US military

The US military will become "leaner" while maintaining superiority as it switches focus to the Asia-Pacific, US President Barack Obama has announced.

In a rare appearance at the Pentagon, he unveiled a far-reaching defence review under which thousands of troops are expected to be axed.

The tide of war was receding and the US must renew its economic power, he said.

The strategy is designed to accommodate at least $450bn (£290bn) in Pentagon cuts over the next decade.

The defence budget could also lose another $500bn at the end of this year after Congress failed to agree on deficit reduction following a debt-ceiling deal in August.

"So yes, our military will be leaner," Mr Obama told reporters, "but the world must know - the United States is going to maintain our military superiority with armed forces that are agile, flexible and ready for the full range of contingencies and threats."

Its new CAAM missile, was in development since 2005, glad to see they have completed development stage of this long overdue system and gave it name finally. Sea Captor as it known now will have range of 20 miles and basically be UK's answer to point defense missile systems developed by other nations, notably US-German system in service RAM, Sea-RAM and RAM-2 (rolling airframe missile).

hopefully system proves to be very good, as sea wolf has proved to be very sophisticated and capable system. CAAM or Sea Captor CIWS will prominently feature on all new warships that enter service with the RN, Type 45s will have at least 32 launchers on top of their current load of 48 missiles, they'll be quad packed in to aster 30 launchers increasing number of missiles Type 45 can carry from current 48 to 104 missiles+ 8 harpoons.

Type 26 frigates will carry 48 of these missiles in two separate VLSs, type 23 frigates might be able to get upto 64 missiles, i am not sure as CAAM/Sea Captor requires less space than Sea Wolf System.

A self-guiding bullet that can steer itself towards its target is being developed for use by the US military.

The bullet uses tiny fins to correct the course of its flight allowing it to hit laser-illuminated targets.

It is designed to be capable of hitting objects at distances of about 2km (1.24 miles). Work on a prototype suggests that accuracy is best at longer ranges.
