Is there any chance that North Korea is bluffing on this one? If not, if this "action" inflicts deaths in South Korea, the United States and SK should do something "unpredecented" as well. China may issue warnings all it wants but it is not a superpower yet.

DARPA’s SeeMe program aims to give mobile, individual US warfighters overseas access to on-demand, space-based tactical information in remote and beyond- line-of-sight conditions. If successful, SeeMe will provide small squads and individual teams the ability to receive timely imagery on a handheld device of their specific overseas location directly from a small satellite with the press of a button — something that’s currently not possible from military or commercial satellites.

Amid rocket battle, upgrade for Iron Dome

Israel's Iron Dome counter-rocket system, winner of this year's Israel Defense Prize, is in action again battling a Palestinian missile barrage but Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is developing a more advanced and deadlier variant.

It's expected to be operational by mid-2013. An even more advanced Block 3 model is to follow to boost Israel's growing air-defense shield against everything from Iranian ballistic missiles to short-range unguided rockets.

WikiLeaks unveils enormous leak of communications of Syrian politicians

"The database comprises 2,434,899 emails from the 680 domains. There are 678,752 different email addresses that have sent emails and 1,082,447 different recipients. There are a number of different languages in the set, including around 400,000 emails in Arabic and 68,000 emails in Russian. The data is more than eight times the size of ’Cablegate’ in terms of number of documents, and more than 100 times the size in terms of data."

Hypersonic plane to fly at 20 times speed of sound

July 17, 2012 - 1:41PM

The US military aims to fly a hypersonic plane at 20 times the speed of sound by 2016.

The X-plane will travel at Mach 20 (roughly 20,900 km/h), which means it could fly to any place on earth in less than an hour.

The project, titled Integrated Hypersonics, is being carried out by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which has developed stealth aircraft for the US government for over 30 years.

Senate Panel Keeps Navy’s Biofuel Plan Afloat

The Navy’s plans to power warships with biofuels may not be out of gas quite yet. On Tuesday, the Senate defense appropriations subcommittee voted to continue funding the alternative energy program, keeping alive the Navy’s push for an ambitious “Great Green Fleet,” propelled by renewable fuels.

That's good! At least they're making progress. First it's the navy, then it's the rest of the military, then it's everyday technology like zippers and velcro.

The Twin Existential Threats

August 6, 2012

The twin existential threats of nuclear weapons and global warming may work together to end life on Earth because climate dislocations will make desperate national confrontations more likely. But the world’s politicians are doing little about either, writes Robert Dodge.

He makes some good points. If the US do directly intervene militarily I hope Russia are able to assist the legitimate Syrian government. I find the US obsession with funding and arming terrorists deeply disturbing and would hate to see what was until recently one of the nicest, most stable countries in the entire middle east turn into a new Libya/Iraq.

Nice to see the UK have just given another £5 million to Al Qaeda affiliated groups. When this is over what's to stop all the equipment they buy ending up in Afghanistan being used against the British and US troops? Great logic
