A Star Grazed Our Solar System 70,000 Years Ago, and Early Humans Likely Saw It

March 21, 2018

Some distant objects in our solar system bear the gravitational imprint of a small star's close flyby 70,000 years ago, when modern humans were already walking the Earth, a new study suggests.

[...]

Scholz's star passed by the solar system at a time when early humans and Neanderthals shared the Earth. The star likely appeared as a faint reddish light to anyone looking up at the time, researchers with the new study said.

William Hogarth's The Idle 'Prentice Executed at Tyburn, from the Industry and Idleness series (1747).

For many centuries, Tyburn was the principal place for execution of London criminals and convicted traitors.

^ Actually, this is wrong. The Union Jack in its current form dates from 1801. The U.S. flag in its current form dates from the 1950s. Not sure about the rest.

The bottom of Northgate Street, Gloucester was once home to this fine Methodist church, it was knocked down to make way for Tesco, and now is the site of Wilko.

Here is an article about lost buildings from where I live from years ago.

They certainly dressed differently back then!

Weird to see this video and realise that most of the "young" people here are either elderly now, or dead.

It's equivalent to somebody from 2069 watching a video of us today.

The Hays House on Main Street in Council Grove, Kansas, around 1860 (~158 years ago)

The authentic Old West of America! Probably featured less gun violence than today, ironically.

Pompeii victim crushed by boulder while fleeing eruption

Archaeologists at Pompeii have uncovered the remains of an unfortunate man who was decapitated by an enormous rock while fleeing the volcano.

Nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, killing many Pompeii residents and famously freezing them in place.

This skeleton appears to be from a man who survived the initial explosion and was fleeing the doomed city.

A leg injury, however, may have slowed him down before he was crushed by the huge stone hurtling through the air.

Pompeii archaeologists say the skeleton shows signs of a bone infection in his leg, which could have made walking - much less running - very difficult.

Rare, shocking image of the Tiananmen Massacre aftermath.

Funny thing I learned (that is literally never taught in Western schools) is that the students were communists protesting against capitalist reforms. I was always taught that they were educated students protesting against the Communist Party, and the details were never made clear.
