Oh and I was just coming to resurrect this thread as there should be some interesting developments in this conflict before too long, especially as this conflict has not really been in the headlines since early 2015.

War Returns

Poroshenko is terrified by possible warming in US-Russian relations that may lead to collapse of his regime, with btw actively worked against Trump during election. Now, once again, he desperately trying to attract western attention to "Ukaine under attack". And the only way to do it - through another escalation.

Expect russia to attack and start a lot more wars now that they have their boy in office.

And this is just silly. If Trump was really "Russian boy", this would mean much less wars, and not "a lot more".

As far as i remember, Ukrainian regime blame rebels: "yes, once again we killed some civilians, but that's only because they (rebels) have established their positions in residential areas... their fault, not ours!"

And now look at this: Ukrainian tanks in residential area and behind them, the white cars of OSCE which, i bet, didn't noticed them...

Another one:

Spoiler

In general, nothing new to anyone who closely follows this conflict. Since 2014, Ukrainian artillerists have a habit of establishing "safe positions" in school yards and kindergartens while "International observers" shyly turning away.

Worst fighting in east Ukraine since 2015; 33 dead this week

International monitors on Friday strongly urged the warring sides in eastern Ukraine to silence their guns as heavy artillery and rocket barrages continued to pummel residential areas.
At least 33 people including civilians have been killed and several dozen injured in fighting this week in eastern Ukraine between government forces and Russia-backed separatist rebels — the worst violence in the region since 2015.
The death toll in the fighting that began in April 2014 has now exceeded 9,800, according to U.N. figures and a tally of recent fighting.
"Unacceptable! ... Sides have to stop fighting!" the monitoring mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation In Europe said on its Facebook page.
While the warring sides have regularly exchanged gunfire despite a February 2015 peace deal brokered by France and Germany, this week has seen a sharp spike in hostilities. Fighting has raged around the government-controlled industrial town of Avdiivka, just north of the main rebel stronghold of Donetsk, catching residential areas in the crossfire.
"We have seen on both sides an incredible amount of cease-fire violations," said Alexander Hug, deputy head of the OSCE's monitoring mission.
Each side blamed the other for the upsurge of violence, but the Ukrainian military says its troops have gained some ground.
Associated Press reporters saw heavy weapons on both sides of the front line, in clear violation of the 2015 peace deal that envisaged their pullback.

Two interesting and symbolic news:

Putin just issued a decree about official Russian recognition of papers (passports, diplomas, car plates and so on) of DNR and LNR, thus cancelling the absurd situation when people of Donbass were officially treated in Russia as Ukrainians.

And second, Sergey Lavrov officially claimed that Russian sanctions against EU will not be lifted as long as Europe does not fulfill the Minsk agreements... Excellent response, i think.

Our anniversary gift to Ukrainian regime:

Integration Committee "Russia - Donbass" was established in Crimea

donbass_rossiya.jpg?itok=HC3St97n

Russia is providing substantial support to the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics and there is a need for public coordination of the numerous historical and humanitarian ties between Donbas and Russia, a permanent Integration Committee is being created to carry out this work," said its coordinator, State Duma deputy Andrei Kozenko On Friday in the Livadia Palace in Yalta.

"The idea of creating the committee appeared in January of this year, when the leaders of Donbass Alexander Zakharchenko and Igor Plotnitsky visited Crimea for the first time with an official visit, then we talked about how the republics survive in the conditions of the most severe blockade from the Ukrainian side," Kozenko said.

The leaders of Luhansk People's Republic and Donetsk People's Republic participate in the constituent meeting of the committee.

Combine this with recent words of Igor Plotnitsky:

"We do not just assume, we are sure that such a referendum will be necessary. Of course, we will initiate it, but everything has its time. After all, at the very beginning there was a desire to immediately follow the Crimean path so that we could join the Russian Federation. This turned out a little differently, but this issue was never removed."

Coincidence? I do not think so... With all the last events:

1) Growing influence of radicals in Ukraine.
2) Slow but irreversible erosion of power of Poroshenko.
3) "Blockade of Donbass" initiated by Ukrainian radicals, which...
4) Immediately led to nationalization of main Ukrainian actives in Donbass and...
5) Scared Poroshenko so much that he (despite being strongly against this blockade) was forced to make it official.

...with all these events, i'd guess that chances of Dondass to held this referendum in this year is about 10-20%. There are points of bifurcation when everything happening very fast & perhaps we're heading exactly to such a point.

And another news, perhaps related to previous ones:

New interesting draft law was proposed in Duma:

A new principle of citizenship, based on the "right of the soil", may be introduced in Russia... legislators propose to classify as (potentian) citizens any bearers of Russian language, as well as people born on the territory of former Russian Empire or USSR, as well as those who have relatives in a straight line living in Russia.

In addition, it is proposed to cancel the requirement to provide a document on withdrawal from the foreign citizenship as "procedure which depends on foreign regulations or voluntarism of foreign officials."

Being adopted, this "right of soil" will then certainly be applied to the Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine who will be more than happy to become Russians officially and "voluntarism of foreign officials" will not stop them anymore.

The largest storage of artillery and rocket ammunition in Ukraine - "Arsenal 65" in Balakleya - was destroyed... Official version is (as always) "Russians did it!" but much more real version is usual carelessness or some military boss decided to destroy the evidence of previous systematic stealing.

Anyway, looks very impressive and apocalyptic. These explosions may destroy up to half of total Ukrainian ammo, which otherwise would be used to kill new thousands of people in Donbass. Whoever did this, it was a good job:

initially i even thought this was fake. But no, not fake:

Student from Lviv was sentenced to 2.5 years for quoting Lenin in Facebook

The student of Lviv University was sentenced to 2.5 years with one year delay for quoting the leader of the world proletariat in the social network. Perhaps no one would have heard of this dubious verdict if the Lviv Prosecutor's Office and the Galician District Court of Lviv had not boasted by such an "accomplishment" in the war against crime.

Separate attention deserves material evidence in this "case of the century", which the court decided to destroy as a weapon of crime. Among such criminal tools, the little yellow-and-blue ribbon and the "Capital" of Karl Marx.

This verdict may become the precedent, followed by many similar verdicts, because in social networks there are a lot of groups using communist symbols.

Just the excesses of a young European democracy, i think...

Ukraine bans most popular social networks because they are Russian-owned

The most popular social networks in Ukraine are now banned. Russian-owned Vkontakte (VK.com), search engine Yandex, and Odnoklassniki (OK.ru) are used by more than half of the Ukrainian population, and are far more popular than rivals Facebook and Google.

The decision by Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko to issue the ban as part of anti-Russian sanctions could prove contraversial domestically.

VK is more popular than Facebook in Ukraine, with an estimated 15 million users, more than a third of the country's population.

Odnoklassniki (which translates as Classmates) is also widely popular, as is the Mail.ru email service, which has also been banned.

Authorities say a bomb planted under or inside a car has killed a senior Ukrainian military intelligence officer in the country’s capital.

Ukraine cyber attack: Chaos as national bank, state power provider and airport hit by hackers

Ukraine’s national bank, state power company and largest airport are among the targets of a huge cyber attack on government infrastructure.
Rozenko Pavlo, the deputy Prime Minister, said he and other members of the Ukrainian government were unable to access their computers.
“We also have a network 'down',” he wrote. “This image is being displayed by all computers of the government.”
The photo showed his PC displaying a message claiming a disk “contains errors and needs to be prepared”, urging the user not to turn it off.

Trump Campaign Chief’s Firm Got $17 Million From Pro-Russia Party

http://www.msn.com/e...ID=ansmsnnews11

Introduction

Paul Manafort, who was forced out as President Trump’s campaign chairman last summer after five months of infighting and criticism about his business dealings with pro-Russian interests, disclosed on Tuesday that his consulting firm had received more than $17 million in payments over two years from a Ukrainian political party with ties to the Kremlin.

The filing serves as a retroactive admission that Mr. Manafort performed work in the United States on behalf of a foreign power — Ukraine’s Party of Regions — without disclosing it at the time, as required by law. The Party of Regions is the political base of former Prime Minister Viktor F. Yanukovych, who fled to Russia during a popular uprising in 2014.

The new disclosure hints at the vast fortunes available to top-drawer American political consultants plying their trade in other countries.

It was not immediately clear if Mr. Manafort would be required to pay any fines for the late filing. He has maintained that the majority of his work for Mr. Yanukovych was political consulting in Ukraine, where his firm, Davis Manafort International, operated an office at the time.

The Party of Regions employed Mr. Manafort to help rebrand Mr. Yanukovych and his party — which was long known as tilting toward Russia — as modernizers favoring closer ties to the European Union. All of the work disclosed by Mr. Manafort on Tuesday predated Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign.

Tillerson Talks Tough on Russia, Vows US Support for Ukraine

https://www.nytimes....ns-ukraine.html

Introduction:

KIEV, Ukraine — Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson assured Ukraine’s leader on Sunday that the United States would not lift economic sanctions against Russia until it “reverses the actions” that prompted them and restores the country’s “territorial integrity,” appearing to set the same high bar for sanctions relief that the Obama administration did.

Mr. Tillerson’s strongly worded statement, issued at a news conference in Kiev alongside President Petro O. Poroshenko of Ukraine, seemed to insist that Moscow withdraw Russian troops and heavy weapons from the eastern part of Ukraine and return Crimea, the Black Sea territory that Russia annexed in 2014 — though Mr. Tillerson never specifically mentioned that disputed peninsula by name.

His comments came on the same day that President Trump said the issue of sanctions was not discussed at his meeting on Friday with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

This going to be the really difficult task: withdraw something that isn't there...

Either great news of historical scale, or empty words:

Donetsk Republic Declares Creation of New State of Malorossiya

The Donetsk People's Republic has declared the establishment of a new country - Malorossiya - which the local leadership described as a successor state to Ukraine.

"We, the representatives of former Ukraine, declare the establishment of a new state, Malorossiya, which is a successor state to Ukraine. We agree that the new state's name will be Malorossiya because the very name of Ukraine has discredited itself. The city of Donetsk becomes Malorossiya's capital," DPR Income Minister Alexander Timofeev said while reading a constitution act on the formation of the new country.

FINALLY! That's exactly what should has been done in April 2014. Today, of course, this will only mean the merger of DPR and LPR, the rest of country will stay under Kiev regime which is not going to consider itself "the former Ukraine".

Kaboom! Russian Drone With Thermite Grenade Blows Up a Billion Dollars of Ukrainian Ammo

A single grenade-carrying drone set off one of the largest explosions in recent memory

A drone carrying a grenade infiltrated an ammunition dump in Ukraine, setting off an explosion that caused an astounding billion dollars worth of damage. The incident points to the growing use of drones in wartime, particularly off the shelf civilian products harnessed to conduct sabotage and other attacks.
Ukraine's domestic intelligence service, the SBU, believes that a drone carrying a Russian thermite hand grenade caused a series of titanic explosions at Balakliya, a military base in Eastern Ukraine. Amateur video of the incident posted on YouTube shows a raging fire spewing out of control artillery rockets, and an explosion and shockwave that sent civilians nearby reeling.
One person was killed in the attack and five were injured.
