"For The Love Of Big Brother"

I've been playing with 1984-esque regimes for some time now, as we all know. I first tried it out in The-Story-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named, and while I had fun, I couldn't take it to its logical conclusion. It's now mostly back/side story there. Still, it was fun recreating it from scratch.

I played with it with alternate history scenarios as well, and there's a whole thread dedicated to that.

In the past week, however, I've decided to try my hand at creating 1984 with the twist that it's set in modern times. I mean, yeah, 1984 was only 32 years ago, but I mean in the near future.

It's a variant of the Oceania in One Country theme, and it does require a few suspensions of disbelief.

The Second American Revolution occurs in 2020 after the combined effects of a global economic depression, a costly and Vietnam-esque war in the now collapsed Saudi Arabia, and the most beautifully fake election in American history. There are three major factions...

  1. The New Silver Legion. Based upon the old Silver Legion from the 1930s, the New Silver Legion is made up of disillusioned ex-Trump supporters, radical Tea Partiers, and ultra-libertarian elements of the alternative-right. Donald Trump's 2016 campaign had galvanized the right wing of American society, but his presidency disappointed most as he became "Clinton-lite" and seemingly abandoned his previously politically incorrect and nationalist stances. Their members are known as the "Silver Shirts".
  2. American Worker's Party. Though it sounds socialist, it is actually a far-right populist movement that is trying to attract leftists via solidarity against the government. Curiously, though its initials should be "AWP", several of its inner elite use the initials "NSAWP" on official documents. The AWP broke from the Silver Shirts due to their collaboration with the next group on the list, as well as their overt authoritarianism (the Silver Shirts doggedly claimed themselves to be libertarians).
  3. Democratic Socialists of America. Once a relatively peaceful organization, the DSA became radicalized by both the loss of Bernie Sanders in 2016 and the rise of ultranationalism in 2018. Though they're called the 'Democratic Socialists of America', many of its members support a Marxist-Leninist social order. It is because of this that the AWP's alliance with them led to the Silver Shirts declaring them both to be degenerate groups.

The revolution devolves into a civil war as several US states secede from the union. It threatens to become a nuclear civil war at one point, but cooler heads prevail. China and Russia are eager to capitalize on the chaos, and global markets remain in turmoil since what was once the #1 economy has turned on itself. President Trump cancels the 2020 election and declares martial law. More nations throughout the world begin to go the route of America. It seems like civilization is breaking apart.

But then... On 15 March, 2022...

Donald Trump announces that he's now in exile, that while he's still acting as America's legitimate and democratically elected president, he no longer has control of the government. In fact, most members of the government are now dead. Washington D.C. is under control of a new party.

And nobody knows who it is. The Silver Shirts, the AWP, and the Demsocs are all confused. Even Donald Trump, as well as Russian and Chinese intelligence agencies, do not know who has assumed control over the Disunited States. The NSA, the CIA, the FBI, as well as other shadow organizations, are purged.

On 16 March, 2022, a figurehead known only as "Brother Number One" declares that he has consolidated all power. There is no longer the United States of America, nor are there any separate republics of former states. Now there is only the Greater Panamerican Nation, known in short as 'Panamerica' or 'Panam.'

From now on, I'll assume the role of Brother #1.

After taking over America, I shut down all communications. A few EMPs oughtta do it. The Internet goes. Free speech goes. All power is consolidated into myself: Brother #1. I create a shadow organization known as "The Brotherhood". Simple and memorable. There is a very minor cult of personality around myself as Brother #1. People will be taught to believe that I am omniscient and omnipotent, but they will never know who I am. In fact, everything about the Brotherhood is shrouded in secrecy. There are no official names of who is and isn't a part of the Brotherhood. Just titles like "Brother #2", "Brother #3", "Sister #1", etc. Brothers and Sisters (the Sisters have their own sub-group, the Sisterhood). Of course, you have to take our word that a "Brother" is not actually a "sister" and a "Sister" is not actually a "brother". You will never know the gender of anyone in the Brotherhood. The word becomes meaningless.

All media stations become state-owned. In fact, *everything* becomes state-owned. Everything within the State; nothing outside the State; nothing against the State— and **I** am the State. Of course, who am I? I am Brother #1.

With propaganda now blaring through the airwaves, I construct a highly mechanized army. Why use humans in a military police force when I could use a cold, unfeeling, forever-loyal army of machines? Of course, I *do* employ spies. "Stay wise to the spies." Every person will have at least two other people behind their backs.

All people are to be microchipped. Anyone who refuses is to be incarcerated at one of my LoveCamps.

I establish a central intelligence agency known as the Ministry of Life. This is basically the CIA and the NSA all wrapped up in one glorious package and given 5,000x more power. AI will be used to create the world's most complete panopticon. Drones will always be flying. Robots will always be patrolling. Spies will always be listening. I will always be watching.

More than that, I want to use some cybernetics. What I need to do is to control the youths.

So I enact Operation: Love. With this, every single newborn child now belongs to the State. You have a birth? The Brotherhood will gladly take them. I said we'll take them. You don't get a say in the matter.

All these children will be placed in what I call "studentries." A Studentry is a type of boarding school where you raise a person from birth. This way, I don't need to waste time waiting for multiple generations to come and go— I can get results in a single generation. Any parent who objects? To the LoveCamps you go!

In these Studentries, I mold every single aspect of these children's minds. There will be two classes of children: an elite class who are allowed to learn "English" and an underclass that is taught "Yinglis".

The elite students are Alphas. There will only be one Alpha at every Studentry. They are allowed to learn about some outside details, but they're still very heavily indoctrinated. They are exposed to other viewpoints, but they're viciously taught to accept other viewpoints as inferior. We'll shock them, whip them, rip off their nails, whatever we can do to make sure they understand that the Brotherhood is always right.

The underclass is called the Betas. They are indoctrinated like you will not believe. They are not taught anything truthful. They are heavily drugged from birth, and we use animal methods to coerce them. The Brotherhood has always existed. The Brotherhood created all technology. 2+2=5. Humans are spawned by the love of the Brotherhood. The world exists in the form of 3 superstates— Panamerica (also known as 'Panam'), Atlantis, and Arabia.  We are forever at war with each other; sometimes with one state; sometimes with another. They are demons; we are angels. If we are at war with Atlantis, then they are demons and Panam and Arabia are angels. If we are at war with Arabia, then Panam and Atlantis are angels. If you fail to accept this and wholly believe this, you will suffer extraordinarily. We will choke you, resuscitate you, and choke you again and let your classmates watch— and they'll laugh. We'll teach you all that human life is worthless. Absolutely worthless.

In fact, from birth, you are fed human meat. It is perfectly normal to engage in cannibalism. It is perfectly normal to kill a prole (a subhuman worker) and eat its flesh. There are so many other people out there that the other person is worthless. Even you are worthless. The only reason you're alive is because you're useful at the moment. Should you become useless, you should take it upon yourself to slash your own throat.

We can read your thoughts. We know what you are thinking. We see you when you're sleeping. We know when you're awake. We already know what you will do years, decades before you do it; it is purely out of the Brotherhood's infinite love that we do not punish you now.

So about Yinglis. Have you ever heard of the Piraha tribe? They have a very limited language that does not account for time, numbers, or colors. They can't even add 2 and 2 or count to 10. There you go: that's Yinglis. It's an even more honed, advanced form of the Piraha language. You are never taught anything relating to time. The world existed only as far back as your oldest memory. However, you must equally accept in your mind the fact that the Brotherhood has always existed. You must accept these two contradictory truths and believe both of them.

Language is heavily controlled. There is no "I" or "my", for example. Only "we". There is no individual. You are worthless.

There is no concept of freedom or democracy or liberty or any of that. There is no concept of voting. There is no concept of worker ownership or free markets. In fact, I'm falling back on old tropes: there is no such word as "bad". Only "ungood." Very bad? "Plusungood". Extremely bad? "Doubleplusungood." It doesn't go higher than that; there is no word for "triple".

Numbers exist. However, not as concepts; just names.

You are #235. The idea of a name like "John" sounds blasphemous. That's treated like an insult. George Washington is not a name; George Washington is a number. How is it a number? It is. It is logical. I'll go off on a 1,000 page explanation about how it's logical, even though none of it makes any sense. As long as I sound logical.

Not that you could understand most of that explanation anyway.

Your vocabulary— or 'talkbag'— is very limited after all.

My vocabulary is rather small, though I believe that it is for the greater good that I know the words of Dear Brother One."

"Our talkbag be unbig; we pluslove talkbag be doubleplushelp for work B1."

The weather is pleasant for this time of year. It is not too hot, nor is it too cold. I'm sure that Dear Brother One enjoys such days.

"Skylook good. Skylook unwarm uncool. We pluslove B1."

I wanna check Reddit to see how many dank memes are on the front page. I bet Dear Brother One would love 'em.

"We lookit ungoodhouse to look B1 lovetalk. We mind B1 good yes."

I'm gonna come down hard on any dissenters or possible dissenters. Gotta check those EEG readings at all times. Make sure the algorithm is listening so that anyone who dares try to create a new language is vaporized.

So besides the Alphas and Betas, who else resides in Panam?

There are Former People. Mainly parents and enemies of the State. They're sent to a system of LoveCamps I call PAPA— the Pan-American Penal Administration. Combine every black aspect of the Concentration Camps, Death Camps, Hanoi Hilton, Camp 14, GULAGS, etc. Junko Furuta? Looking to her death for inspiration. Every blackened, depraved act of ultrasadism goes on in the PAPAs.

I don't like talking about it much... oh what the hell, of course I do!

  • Epic amounts of rape. Like, wow. Holy shit. We even build rape machines. Rapebots. Rape-rape-rape-rape-rape. We rape babies; we rape grandmas. We rape everyone. We'll rape you with a light bulb. We'll rape you with a porcupine. We'll rape you with a tapeworm. We'll rape you with knives, swords, glass, wood, volcanic slate, live wires, wires on fire, tire irons, zippers, stitches, needles, fangs, ants, bones, bullets, keys, spoons, you name it, we'll rape you with it— we'll even rape you with rainbows. We'll rape you up the dick, out the skull, with your own penis and tongue. We'll rape you with gympie gympie plants and shove in a poisoned cactus afterwards.
  • Loopkill. It's the best! So we torture you to death, then resuscitate you. Just so we can torture you to death again. And again! And again! And again! However long as we please. We decide when you live and when you die, you sniveling little bitch.
  • Bland torture. It's all been done before.
  • Absolute experimentation. Anything we can do, we will do. We'll inject you with hydrochloric acid and milk while freezing you in liquid nitrogen.
  • Deathdays. Lucky people get to choose how they die from a list. If they have enough work credits saved up, they can possibly even choose a painless death!  Of course, the guards can determine whether or not they decide to consider your credits "valid". Sometimes, you just get handed a bad hand.
PAPA is run by the Ministry of Revolutionary Affairs.

Then there are the Degenerates. These are my favorites! They're a bunch of babies taken from their parents and thrown out into wild preserves. If they live, they live. Most don't. Some do. They become feral humans completely and utterly incapable of any sort of civilized behavior. Devoid of emotion, devoid of intelligence, devoid of empathy, devoid of creativity. If they happen to be too smart, a good lobotomy or three will change that.

Uh oh! There are Attacks. Since we're forever at war with two other superstates, we sometimes get attacked. That's the nature of war. Of course, this isn't true at all— Panam only consists of the continental United States, but they don't know that. It all started when some far-right rebels holed themselves up in Chattanooga early in my regime. I could've sent in the military, but there were too many civilian supporters of the rebels and I didn't want to overstretch myself or cause needless suffering. So I nuked the bastards. A couple of megatons oughtta do it. If not, nuke the place again. Salt a neutron bomb with cobalt and drop it for good measure. Oh, some losers survived? There's no hope for them. They're in the most unimaginable, hellish pain you can experience, and their deaths have only just begun. The rest of Panam didn't know it happened since I control all media and the Internet is perpetually down.
The Brotherhood simulates war often, attacking cities and the countryside, killing people, dropping nuclear bombs. We parade "foreigners" around as prisoners of war.

Guns become symbols of the resistance. If you resist my regime, you're going to want to get a gun.
Guns are also the class symbol of the Thought Police. Only the Thought Police possess guns, so anyone coming to them to get guns has basically just come to them to pick the gun with which they're going to be shot.

I'll kill off 150 million useless bottom feeders easily. I'll make the rest breed like rabbits so I'll have more to kill. And the outside world doesn't dare thwart my plans: I have nukes. A lot of them, in fact. My droid army is making more.

We're making gigaton nukes. We're making cobalt-salted gigaton nukes. Remember those SLAM missiles? We got a thousand of them. We've got enough firepower to end a galaxy of worlds.

You fuck with me, I end the world and make sure *nothing* ever lives here again. I'll turn the surface to lava the world over. The crust will become indistinguishable from the mantle. It'll be a global ocean of Hell, hotter than the Sun, more acidic than Venus!

Will my citizens ever know what the year is? No. After the Former People die out, no one will be capable of understanding what a "year" even is. It won't even be 1984. It will always be the Love of Brother #1. They'll never be able to understand the passage of time. I'll beat it out of them. Time is my love. Nothing else.

Citizens who commit crimes, including thoughtcrimes, are erased. They are damned from memory. They never existed. Anyone who mentions unpersons may become an uperson themselves.

Stay wise to the spies.

Stay wise to the spies.

40 years pass. Civilization looked like it was about to collapse back in the early '20s, but it all worked out in the end. By 2025, the global crisis had passed. The rest of the world has advanced as normal, used to Panamerica being a prison-state. Defectors manage to make it. One woman swam all the way to Cuba. Another man dug to Mexico (though he claims the Brotherhood has put in place measures to stop this). The Canadian border is ultra-militarized. So is the Mexican border.

In 2061, over a thousand people escape into Mexico. They are stunned by what they see. It's a first-world heaven of a place, free and full of luxuries they could scarcely imagine. In fact, Mexico is pretty standard for the world at this time. Even Africa is no longer the undeveloped continent it once was. Most of the planet is first world. However, roughly 800 million people live in absolute poverty.

850 million people live in poverty around the world. But 50 million of those impoverished still have some level of luxury. They are impoverished, but not starving or living totally without.
800 million live in absolute poverty, as if it's still the 1500's. All 800 million can be found in Panamerica.

There is no middle class in Panamerica. There is the Inner Party, Outer Party, and the Proles. Only the Inner Party live anywhere near "luxuriously", and only the inner elite of the Inner Party live in actual luxury.

The migrants tell of a hellish, dystopian world. Some migrants apologize for others— some people can't even speak. They are not taught anything. They are left to themselves, left to become wild men. Feral humans. Most people cannot speak properly. Language has become a class symbol— only the Inner Party speak Old English. Everyone else speaks Yinglis. Everyone save the elders who managed to survive to the present. In fact, it's an Elder saying all this.

Abraham Williams, also known as #8403135, is 64 years old, even though he seems 104. He lived in a Nevada cave most of his life, and he got to watch the world collapse around him. He smuggled some materials that the Brotherhood fed the masses. Williams actually has a book from the 2030s that has now been erased from history. His copy is the only copy that exists.
He's one of the lucky ones. Most areas of the United States are now fully surveilled, and there are very few places left to hide. It just happened that he found one of them early on. The Brotherhood can't map every single cave, after all: though they are very willing to try. Truth is, he was going to be found sooner or later. The air in Panamerica is dense with drones.

Using washed leaves and stones, he's been writing a biography about his life and a eulogy to America and hoped that someone would read it some day. At the very least, its ashes would grace the wind of another place. He feared the worst after a certain point. He always remained optimistic and told himself not to believe any of the propaganda that the Brotherhood delivered, but by the 2050s, he began to believe some of it. That the whole world was this way. That all hope was lost.

At least now he can rest easy knowing he was always right. Mexico reminds him of America. Old America, before it became a piss-soaked hellhole. He doesn't remember America ever being this pleasant, actually. That's what's so sickening. America was once the leader of the world, heads above the rest. If Mexico could be so glittery, imagine what America could have been.

It really makes you sad.

Some motherfucker read 1984 and decided to try to replicate it to the best of his abilities. And he succeeded. More than that, he overachieved.

Williams confirms what the rest of the world knew— all social order in Panamerica is gone, and it has become an Orwellian hellhole. It represents the height of inhumanity, going further than any other regime in history has ever gone or may ever go again.

Brother #1? That sounds even more dystopian than 'Big Brother'. And just like with Big Brother, no one knows who he is. In fact, no one has ever seen his face either. There are no pictures of him, not even propaganda. No one is absolutely sure who runs Panamerica. They accepted that it's a group known as the Brotherhood led by a figure known as Brother #1, but even that may be a lie.  They have no clue who is in power, or where the center of power is located. City #1 isn't considered special; in fact, all evidence he's gathered suggests that it is Detroit.

He talks about the Studentries. He's seen the Studentries in person, and they look like something ripped from The Wall. Colorless, imposing, Brutalist terraces, attended by kids in blue or black suits. Most students— not all, but most— have moptop hairdos; the boys tend to have sideburns. They are violent places; youth violence runs rampant around the Studentries and out in the world at large. Most civil homicides occur in or near the Studentries.

The children are beasts. They've been taught to hate their whole lives, and they have become primal hate machines. They have no sense of morality. No sense of right and wrong. They are taught that killing, rape, violence in general is good. They are fed humans from birth and told to engage in cannibalism regularly, so they don't see it as being a taboo. Many speak a strange, incomprehensible language that strips away all higher thought functions. There is no personal pronoun. There is no "I". There is no "my." Only "we." Only "our".

However, some only barely know this language. There are millions of children who are not only illiterate but also dumb or mostly dumb, incapable of speech beyond a few words.

They cannot fathom time. The past exists only as far back as they can remember, and the future doesn't exist at all. At the same time, they are taught that the Brotherhood has always existed and will always exist. They are taught that the stars are listening devices. That they are always watched, even in their dreams and thoughts. Should they ever sin, they will immediately be damned. And Panamerica's surveillance state is so complete, he doesn't doubt they can do it.

The vast majority of Panamericans live in slums, often crowded into a single room, but always watched. The Thought Police— yes, that's what they're really called— are everywhere, and no one can trust anyone else.

In the early days, most major cities were forcibly evacuated and their citizens were forced to live on agrarian collectives. Naturally, many perished, as they were unable to adapt to an agrarian lifestyle after being raised in an urban environment. However, some cities were filled past the point of insanitation. All modern conveniences were destroyed. Televisions were replaced with telescreens. Smartphones were destroyed en masse. Any technology that Americans post-1850 enjoyed was taken from them, and they were eventually convinced they never had them in the first place.

In 2020, the average American brought home $50,000 and could enjoy a comfortable life filled with luxuries. Nowadays, people don't actually work for money. In many cases, they are told to work and are never paid. If they dare ask for payment, they are beaten or killed. If they want to live, they must survive through sustenance farming. Some people, who lived full (if short) lives, have only ever eaten grass and insects that they could scavenge.

The nation is crumbling physically, as virtually no maintenance has been done since 2021. This isn't helped by the Brotherhood waging war on its own population for 40 years. The bomb they dropped on Chattanooga wasn't the last; only the first of many. Almost all of the American Southeast and a vast swath of the Southwest are desolate, irradiated nightmares where atomic weapons explode freely. Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, Pensacola, and Charleston are all bombed-out. A few thousand people still live in Houston, living as scavengers, subsisting on rats and corpses, dreading when the next bomb will fall.
San Francisco was subject to bombing raids, and a whole fake army laid siege to the place. It was a modern day Stalingrad, with extreme brutality inflicted upon the citizens by the "invaders". Over a million starved to death. Williams thinks that number is too high; most almost certainly starved before that point. But maybe it's in fact too low. No one knows.

A society so perfectly medieval should have collapsed decades ago. However, the Brotherhood possesses a mechanized army and workforce that keeps the nation from imploding. They developed this mechanized army early on after taking from DARPA top-secret developments in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence.

Though Google eventually created an artificial general intelligence, by this point they had already relocated to Japan. The Panamerican AI system is extremely primitive compared to those from the rest of the world, having not progressed beyond a point that the Brotherhood needed it to progress. Some estimates put the Panamerican AI network as being equivalent to the Google AI network from 2025.

It is intelligent enough to reproduce and understand some abstract concepts necessary for tasks involving warfare and societal control, but the Brotherhood do not dare let it improve itself. It is forever under their control. The AI, thus, can create Terminators that are capable of crushing any dissent as well as understanding when a particular EEG reading means a person has committed thoughtcrime, but cannot be used to improve crop yields or maximize the efficiency of factories.

Cities have been renamed. Los Angeles is now City #9. Las Vegas is City #16. He doesn't know what's become of Chicago or New York. Names have been erased, replaced with numbers. The past has been erased, replaced with myths. Malgenics is practiced. The dumbest are preferred. Retardation may be inflicted. People who question are stripped of individuality. Drugs are used to break people. Turn them into clockwork oranges.

And then there are feral humans. Williams didn't believe such a thing existed until just a few years ago, and even then he thought it was yet another one of the Brotherhood's mindgames. But it's true: they really have gone that far. There are humans so totally removed from civilization that they have reverted into a primal state. It's amusing to the Brotherhood, and they organize hunts for feral humans for their meat as well as for entertainment. It's like something straight from Planet of the Apes— humans who act like monkeys. Of course, these monkey people are those who were raised by monkeys. Some were raised by other animals. A special few were forced to survive entirely on their own, and their culture is the closest thing to "proto-human" we may ever see.

There are Alphas, of course. Williams is unsure if the Alphas still exist since biological immortality is now available, since the whole reason for their existence was to keep the Brotherhood alive well into the future. He's heard nothing about Alphas for decades now.

Williams mentioned that there are dumb people, as well as people who can only speak Yinglis. This is the most horrible aspect of it all, because it means there is no hope for the future. These people— the extreme majority of Panamerica, as much as 98% of the population— cannot spread culture. They're so broken that they have lost behavior modernity. In essence, the humans of Panamerica are becoming less human.

There is no hope and there is nothing they can do. All that the rest of the world can do now is weep and move on.

Of course, there is hope. The best Panamerica has are nuclear missiles and bombers. Even in the 2020's, these were becoming outdated. Now, in the 2060's, a war with Panamerica would be like the USA in 2020 fighting against Ancient Rome. There are orbital lasers and kinetic-energy weapons, as well as electromagnetic weapons that can disable any nuclear missile. Plasma railguns can destroy missile silos from across the planet.

The reason why the world hasn't intervened isn't because they're afraid of a nuclear holocaust. It's because of what Williams has already said: if they destroy the Brotherhood and depose Brother #1, they will have 800 million starved, brainwashed, inhuman Panamericans to deal with. It would be the largest humanitarian crisis in world history, possibly never to be equaled. They can't just bring these people into civilized society and translate their words so they can understand the world. They have effectively been devolved by the State, and their masochistic language means that they wouldn't be able to understand anything beyond the meaning of what the Brotherhood wants them to understand. Any attempt at communication will fail. And this rooting goes so deep that even emotional exchange via psychotronic technology won't do any good. They would need to engage in the most complete thought reformation in history if they want any chance at saving the Panamericans, and they just don't know if such a thing is possible.

They are the Dead. It is true. There is no hope, and there is nothing they can do.

And why? What is the Brotherhood aiming to do? Are they fascists? Communists? Neither. They are powermongers. Just like in 1984, the Party known as the Brotherhood exists for the sole pursuit of raw, absolute, undiluted, unrestrained power. And absolutely no one knows the identity of Brother #1. Never have.

Never will.

And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

Yuli, I really enjoyed reading this, I mean you have no idea how interesting this was to read. You took Orwell and added a transhumanist twist, you took dystopia and discussed how the normal world would react to it. Honestly, I think you could write a book about this and be pretty darn successful. Thanks for the awesome read and keep writing.

Edit: As you will read below, I've officially retconned several aspects of the OP. Panamerica is no longer just the continental United States.

Hmm.... I wonder if I should push it out even further. I said I wanted "Oceania in One Country", but to be honest, that was a last-minute decision. Originally, Panamerica actually was going to extend from pole to pole, but I decided that would be doing the Brotherhood too much service.

So hows abouts thises?

Yep, North Korea is still around in 2084! And it's just as Orwellian as ever. Except, of course, it's not as Orwellian as Panamerica. You see, North Korea may be pretty bad, but the leadership apparently still does actually care about achieving communism. Their methods for achieving it are fuck't up, but they're idealists. I don't think they're absolute evil on purpose; just paranoid and psychotic.

Not so for Panamerica. As I already said, the leadership in Panamerica cares only for raw, unrestrained power, even at their own detriment. They appear paranoid and psychotic only because it's easy to misinterpret powerwhoring for paranoia.

A person who escapes from Panamerica and somehow winds up in North Korea would be awestruck at the freedom they now possess.

I'll think they're at Kim Jong-Pow by this point.

Another great irony? There are three states, perhaps even superstates you could call them, that are literally called "Oceania", "Eurasia", and "East Asia". It's ironic considering all three are liberal democracies. Maybe East Asia has traces of authoritarianism left, but I doubt it's anything like today. We've never been at war with Eurasia. We've never been at war with Eastasia either. Nor Oceania. Most Panamericans have no idea these places exist; they believe in the superstates of Panamerica, Atlantis, and Arabia.

Of course, the Arabian Republic does exist. It is a Western-style democracy all the same. Or perhaps I should say Arabian-style democracy. Its darkest days are behind it. Same as the United States of Africa.

All these 'United States' and 'Federations' formed in the aftermath of the crises in the early '20s. I think there's also an Antarctic Federation down under. Maybe even a Lunar and Martian Federation?

Why not!

So by 2084, there are very few individual countries left, replaced by superstates. In confederal states, there are still a multitude of nations, but it's largely a semi-unified world. Almost all of them are liberal democracies. Very high standard of living across the map. Very, very high levels of automation, thus rendering the world technostist. There are obviously businesses and corporations, but a plurality of commercial activity is done through a few meganetworks thanks to automation, open-source technology, and fabrication. Classical enterprises become quaint symbols, mostly attended by hipsters and antemillennialists.

The exception to all this is Panamerica. And North Korea, but especially Panamerica.

I think most people are asking "how the hell did Panamerica annex Greenland without starting World War III?" Actually, the threat of World War III was the reason why Panamerica was able to keep it. Denmark and the EU (which was in a state of freefall at the time) wasn't going to risk a nuclear war with the world's sole superpower over Greenland.

2023 to 2026: the Great American War. The Disunited States invades Canada using blitzkrieg tactics. We storm through Canada and immediately jump to Greenland. This is actually started on 1 January, 2023 and finished by 6 June, 2023. The war lasts to 2026 because the Disunited States, now known as Panamerica, simultaneously invaded Mexico.

Never start a war on two fronts. That's never a good idea. Of course, we obliterated Canada and Greenland, so we were able to focus all of our attention on Mexico.

China and Russia decided to turn Mexico into the new Iraq, the new Vietnam. They sent advisers down to train the Mexican military. We conquered Mexico by 2024, but the insurgency kept up. Many had already been trained thanks to the narcowars of previous decades.

By 2025, as I said, the world had recovered from the dark days of yore, and could finally turn their attention to the crisis in Central America.

Tensions ran extremely high when evidence of the use of nuclear weapons was detected; of course, this was the Chattanooga Sunrise mentioned in the OP. Brazil allied with several South American states to ward off against the American invaders.

Panamerica invades the Caribbean states, deposing the Castro regime and taking control of almost every state.

An interesting scenario unfolds on the island of Hispaniola. There, Panamerica occupies Haiti, but does not take the Dominican Republic. This leads to a situation not unlike the one in the Korean peninsula— the border between the two nations becomes ultra-militarized.

As feared, Panamerica did not stop at Mexico, instead pushing on all the way to Panama in a second bltizkrieg even more brutal than the first— the military crossed entire span from Mexico to Panama in a single day.

Colombia is where it had to come to an end. The Latin American Union received aid from NATO, Russia, and China— an unlikely group of allies. They were going to put a stop to all Panamerican aggression. In 2026, it seemed like the clash was inevitable. 1.2 million Panamerican troops were built up along the Panama-Colombia border, and another 300,000 were sitting along the Bering Strait separating Russia from Alaska.

But then, on Valentine's Day, 2026, the Panamericans withdrew their troops and instead began constructing heavily-fortified demilitarized zones.

Crisis averted.

Panamerica: Lost. Even America's former enemies became concerned. The West was absolutely shocked by this new development, the loss of their greatest ally. Russia and China were highly disturbed: this new America had none of the dark grace and apprehension of the old one. This was not the rival power they were used to dealing with. This new ultra-fascist and totalitarian America was different. In fact, both nations saw something in Panamerica that few other nations did. Something truly blackened. Something evil.

If only they knew, maybe they could have done something.

And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

Hmm.... I wonder if I should push it out even further. I said I wanted "Oceania in One Country", but to be honest, that was a last-minute decision. Originally, Panamerica actually was going to extend from pole to pole, but I decided that would be doing the Brotherhood too much service.

So hows abouts thises?

It didn't save a few other nations, so add

United States of Africa

Democratic People's Republic of Korea

Oceania

Um. You said up above that Canada and Mexico were separate countries. Now they're not...

I'm not sure all of these new countries are realistic. Why would Russia join Europe? (For that matter, would the UK? It's less of a stretch, but still...). How are China, India, Japan, and South Korea all getting along as part of the same country?

Beyond that, I can't get behind a government that's basically just evil for shits and giggles. It doesn't make any sense, because, y'know, most people aren't evil just because they can be. Evil people generally have reasons for doing stuff (even Hitler!), and that's not even counting the people who think they're doing good. Two ideas to make it believable (you can take either or both):

1) The Panamerican government has a vision. They really want to make everything great, and they don't care who they hurt or kill, or what they destroy  in the process. They WILL lead Panamerica into a shining new utopia, dammit! Their ideology is messed up, but at least they've got one. For bonus points, have their ideology even seem reasonable in a kind of bizarre and twisted way. Make readers question what their own beliefs.

2) If Have a country controlled by pleasure, not suffering. Hide the steel with silk gloves. Give people lots of bread and circuses so they don't realize they're being screwed over. Shower them with mindless junk so they won't bother to ask questions and raise dissent. But if somebody penetrates the veil of good stuff, come down like a ton of bricks on them and ruin them, all the while being as cheerful as ever. Instead of torture, drug them so stupid they won't bother asking questions again.

Either or both of these could make some powerful social commentary if done right. But stuff like this just breaks suspension of disbelief:

Because gas chambers just aren't dystopian enough...

Now, in the 2060's, a war with Panamerica would be like the USA in 2020 fighting against Ancient Rome.

No, it would be more like a war between 2020 US and 1970 US.

Um. You said up above that Canada and Mexico were separate countries. Now they're not...

This is an issue that can be rectified by reading the post. I've officially retconned the OP. It's now 2084.

He who controls the past controls the future; he who controls the present controls the past. Remember? Now you don't.

I'm not sure all of these new countries are realistic. Why would Russia join Europe? (For that matter, would the UK? It's less of a stretch, but still...).

70 years is a long time. Let's go with about 80 in this case. Let's go from 1914 to 1991. How different was Eurasia in 1991 as compared to 1914? A whole lot happened in that time frame (which is the understatement of the century).

This is assuming there are major events that lead to the world becoming this way.

For example, did you know that Russia contemplated joining NATO two separate times? First in 1954 (believe it or not), and again in 2002. The latter was more conjecture than an attempt, of course. But imagine if they had.

Imagine how different history would be if Russia joined NATO in 2002.

That kind of wild-card is what I'm expecting. It could be that, five years from now, Russia, Mongolia, the -Stans, and China unite to form the Eurasian Federation. How? Who knows!

How are China, India, Japan, and South Korea all getting along as part of the same country?

They're not, because they aren't part of the same country. They're a confederation. They're the Asian equivalent to the EU.

Two ideas to make it believable (you can take either or both)

You said it right there: MOST people aren't evil. There are a few who genuinely do take pleasure in causing misery. So imagine if such people came into power.

'You are ruling over us for our own good,' he said feebly. 'You believe that human beings are not fit to govern themselves, and therefore --'

He started and almost cried out. A pang of pain had shot through his body. O'Brien had pushed the lever of the dial up to thirty-five.

'That was stupid, Winston, stupid!' he said. 'You should know better than to say a thing like that.'

He pulled the lever back and continued:

'Now I will tell you the answer to my question. It is this. The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from all the oligarchies of the past, in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just round the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin to understand me?'

Either or both of these could make some powerful social commentary if done right. But stuff like this just breaks suspension of disbelief:

Again, you've failed to understand the mindset of the Brotherhood. If they were aiming to create a better world, then they cease functioning as the Brotherhood.

These are the freaks of the totalitarian world. They do not care about creating a better world. In fact, one could say they do have a conviction: creating a worse world at all costs. Anything to maximize human suffering and obtain absolute power.

In fact, by trying to rationalize their actions by saying that they surely must have some sort of ulterior motive, you are playing right into their hands. You've become Winston Smith, Jakob

Also, since this scenario is 1984-On-Steroids, obviously I can't do that. If I wanted to do that, I'll create a Brave New World-On-Steroids.

That's actually not a bad idea... I'll hafta get back to you on that one.

  • Epic amounts of rape. Like, wow. Holy shit. We even build rape machines. Rapebots. Rape-rape-rape-rape-rape. We rape babies; we rape grandmas. We rape everyone. We'll rape you with a light bulb. Because gas chambers just aren't dystopian enough...

? Gas chambers qualify as conventional torture to them. That's not even the worst part; even the US today operates gas chambers to execute criminals. In my next update, I'll go in-depth on the various methods of mass murder, mass torture, and genocide in which Panamerica engages.

Now, in the 2060's, a war with Panamerica would be like the USA in 2020 fighting against Ancient Rome.

No, it would be more like a war between 2020 US and 1970 US.

This is so incredibly wrong. How could a united global army that is technologically 60 years ahead of a backwards, dilapidated nation equivalent to 2020 vs 1970? The US in 2020 will have many technological advantages over the US in 1970, obviously, but we will still be fighting roughly the same way. No orbital weapons, no plasma railguns, no mechanized army, no sonic weapons, etc. Fast forward many decades, especially in a timeline where our defense industry is aided by AI-accelerated development, and the difference becomes vast.

The US circa 2020 almost certainly will not be capable of stopping a full barrage of nuclear missiles. The US circa 2084 will. In fact, it won't even be difficult.

Does the US in 2020 have possession of artificial superintelligence? In this timeline, we do not. And even if we did, the Brotherhood would do everything in their power to cripple it.

Note: this story is actually conservative with artificial superintelligence. I wanted the world of 2061 and now 2084 to be, in some way, recognizable to us. ASI muddies the water too much, so I had to handwave much of it away.

And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

Let's see, what else can I retcon? The original post was nice, but I don't think it was dark enough.

Greater Panamerican Nation

sLv8hQk.png

BPaycqs.png

Full name: The Greater Panamerican Nation

Common name: Panamerica; Panam

Common acronym: PAN; GPAN (less common)

Population: 3.38 billion (prone to hyperfluctuation due to industrial mass murder and breeding programs)

GDP: $94,540,000 USD (2016); in decline

Per capita: Unknown; est. $50 to $100; in decline

Literacy rate: .000001% (English); 72% (Yinglis)

GINI: 1.00

HDI: <0.01

Government: Totalitarian state; Absolutist dictatorship; absolutist oligarchy; autocratic oligarchy

Religion: Christian-Buddhist mixture, fused with State religion; "Obliteration of the Self"

Motto: "For The Love Of Brother Number One"

Interesting facts:

  • Panam is the world's last coal-using nation. It is also the heaviest coal user in history, and thus suffers from extreme smog and acid rain
  • Panam has developed more nuclear weapons than any other nation in history; the most conservative estimate puts the number of warheads of at least 10 kilotons squarely at 1,000,000. It is unknown how many warheads are functional.
  • Panam has "population hyperfluctuation". Between 2024 and 2033, the Panam population dropped from 340,000,000 to 170,000,000 due to extreme violence by the government. From 2034 to 2068, the government enacted "Operation: LoveBomb", forcing radical population growth that increased the number of people from 170,000,000 to over 2 billion in a dangerously short amount of time. Between 2068 and 2074, the government then systematically exterminated 1 billion people, with many of the deaths caused by fanatical Betas and some caused by a fake World War. Ever since 2074, the government has been increasing the population again.
  • Panam is perhaps the poorest nation in history. 99% of its population lives in absolute poverty.
  • Panam is the most militarized country on Earth. There are over 1.2 billion "military units" active; very few of them are human.
  • Panam is home to the worst environmental catastrophe in history. Very wide swaths of the superstate are technically uninhabitable due to extreme conditions such as radioactivity or ultra-toxic lakes of sludge, but people are forced to live here regardless. As aforementioned, extreme coal usage has led to apocalyptic levels of smog. Some areas have not seen clear sunlight in years.
  • Panam has the most militarized borders on Earth. This militarization even extends deep underground.
  • There is only one fusion reactor in Panam, and it is believed to power the nation's largest factory dedicated towards the creation of Death Troopers (Panam's military police)
  • Upwards of 200,000,000 people in Panam are "feral", meaning that they have been raised outside of civilization without parents or legal guardians from birth, and cannot function in civil society. Many of these people are hunted for their meat.
  • Upwards of 700,000,000 people are incarcerated in prison camps as part of the Pan-American Penal Administration, or PAPA— essentially Panam's answer to the Russian GULAG.
  • Because there are no markets or wages, all Panam workers are considered slaves by the World Council.
  • Proles dominate society, but their labor is considered extraneous, done simply to force them to work and make them suffer; most necessary labor is automated
  • Panam working conditions are medieval, with absolutely no worker protections and extensive levels of mistreatment for even the most minor of offenses. Children are expected to work.
  • Because people are not paid for their work, it is difficult to gauge the average income
  • All people in Panam are microchipped
  • There is very extensive thoughtcontrol in Panam, so much so that any dissent can be caught the moment it is thought and can be dealt with thanks to the Death Troopers and Thought Police.
  • There are an estimated 14 billion spying devices in operation in Panam. Some are implanted into people's skulls from birth. Others are drones and robots. This does not include the estimated 90 million Beta spies and 800 million droid spies in operation. This is all controlled by an artificial intelligence known as "LoveNet"
  • Technology in Panam is very primitive. The Brotherhood use modern methods to control the population, but the Inner Party uses technology from the 2020s. The Outer Party and proles, however, live without any modern conveniences save telescreens and spy devices. This essentially makes the nation "cyber-medieval".
  • The vast majority of the population are sustenance farmers. Several million have taken to a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Overhunting and overburdening of the environment has led to catastrophic famines. At times, millions are people are left eating grass and dirt for nourishment for years at a time.
  • Music and art are strictly prohibited. Often, children raised in Studentries suffer through terrible reinforcement-training programs in order to create an extreme aversion towards music of all types. If this fails, they may be lobotomized.
  • Malgenics is aggressively practiced.
  • One of the ways in which Panam engages in mass murder is to construct fenced-off areas, stuff them with Former People and unpersons, and then detonate a nuclear weapon in order to incinerate them. This is treated as entertainment.

So about that torture... well that's coming next time!

And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

PAPA

PAN-AMERICAN PENAL ADMINISTRATION

Work Brings Freedom

Work For Free

Work Is Love

Worklove

It's known as the Pan-American Penal Administration to the Former People and Alphas. To everyone else, it'll always be known as "PAPA". Go to PAPA. What does it stand for? Since you want to know, go to PAPA. Along the way, Brother #1 will tell you (No, he won't.)

So what goes on in the PAPAs? In the LoveCamps?

I already mentioned maximal-rape, loopkill, and experimentation.

There's also gas chambers. That's a given.

Drug torture. Combine virtual reality with drugs specifically designed to fuck you up, and then unleash some ultraviolence.

There's squat torture. It's where you're forced into a position where you can't fully stand up or sit down; you're put into a very uncomfortable position you can't shift out of. If you move too much, you get impaled. Not fatally either. It's pure suffering.

There's sensory deprivation torture. They keep your body rigid and place you in water that matches your body temperature whilst you are also put in a totally black room. They keep you like this for extended periods of time; maybe up to a month or more. You're gonna go mad.

Sensory Superactivation. Here, you get to experience an experimental new form of pain. It's essentially pain as we know it, except your brain is forced to accept higher levels of pain than we can traditionally feel. They supercharge your nerves, and then wire up your brain. This way, you can experience pain a thousand times more severe than normal. Normally, you'd pass out after a certain threshold. No longer! Even your heartbeat, the blood passing through your veins, the neurons firing off in your brain will put you into a hellish, unimaginable level of pain never before felt on this Earth. The very firing off of pain receptors will cause pain. And there is nothing you can do.

Crematoriums. There's a lot of smog over Panamerica. A lot of it's from coal. But not all of it.

AUSCHWITZ_CHIMNEY_SMOKE.png

Human Factory Farms: one of the darker things I wrote for The Story That Shall Never Be Named Again, this is just awful. I actually decided against putting it in the story because it was just too dark.

Imagine these small, metal dog cages. Now jampack about 7 to 10 people into them. Get a whole industrial warehouse full of these things. Cages from floor to ceiling. No light, no air conditioning, just people stuffed in cages. There's miscolored liquids on the floor, you don't even want to know what they are; they're probably a mixture of body fluids and fungal/bacterial fluids. Humans just decaying alive, rotting to death. There is no word in the English dictionary to describe the stench, or the sight.

Why are these people treated this way? Because the Brotherhood is amused by their suffering. They can then farm the rotten human meat and throw it to the proles. Or toss it to fertilize the ground, taunting the proles who so desperately need food.

The Brotherhood doesn't want Betas to be sickened by human factory farms; they want Betas to laugh at them. They want Betas to construct their own by their own volition. The Brotherhood wants people to know about them. Take a big whiff and enjoy the sights and sounds.

Deathlakes: I mentioned above that people are forced to live near lakes of sludge. Sorta like this one.

732-1.jpg

28C18D0A00000578-0-image-a-39_1431865781

Imagine that you live near a lake of raw, bubbling, radioactive sludge. If you try to move away, you get sent to PAPA. If you stay, you suffer some freakish mutant cancer that unleashes a level of pain never before seen in humans. It's so amazing, the police decide to use your experiences to enhance the PAPAs.

Let's not even forget the general dilapidated industrial Brutalism!

qUnqYli.jpg

nNpVzS1.jpg

The average city.

Tomorrow: Atomic Bombs and the world's collective gasp at the horrors of Panam!

Wham! Pow! So I've been listening to some more doom metal.

It reminded me that I technically haven't taken this as far as I could. I seriously could create Twenty Eighty-Four, couldn't I?

Twenty Eighty-Four, by Malik Womack. Spiritual sequel to Nineteen Eighty-Four, by Eric Blair.

And how?

Well, remember The Story That Never Had A Name?

2114: National Bolshevik Greater Eurasia

So cross that with this. Meki goof'd so bad that she wound up creating Orwell's Hell. That could be a fine Mother Meki alternate-history spinoff.

Oooh, I'm getting giddy just thinking about it! Let's whip up a good map.

This time, we have two totalitarian hells. I think that's enough though; I'd rather Eastasia remain free.

This isn't a retcon, obviously; just a sidestory. After this post, we'll get back on track.

2084: Meki Edition

7Ougqpw.png

Fascist Panamerica

BPaycqs.png

National Bolshevik Eurasia

L7JrcGM.png

Both are highly similar. In fact, one could say they are completely identical in all manners and fashions, except for what they call themselves.

Brother Number One and Leon Viyeta both live solely for power: power for the sake of power.

Leon Viyeta was once idealistic, though. In fact, many of the Nazbols are still idealistic and think that the horrors they're inflicting are justified by the better world they're building. But for the inner Nazbol elite, that's just a lie at which they poke fun.

Eurasia, like Panamerica, is desolate and poor. However, the Nazbols tell their people that being impoverished is good. They inflict ultra-primitivism upon them, convincing people that technology is evil and suffering is good. This enables them to regress European and Russian society back to the Dark Ages, justifying why people no longer have technological pleasures like the Internet, cybernetics, or even basic air conditioning. They then utilize revisionism to convince the masses that they're actually extraordinarily wealthy and advanced compared to the rest of the world and that's why they're better than the rest. Doublethink, my friends, it's doubleplusgood!

Unlike Panamerica, where all but the inner circle of the Brotherhood live in squalor, Eurasian society's elite is well off. This allows them to recreate medieval scenes of lords and peasants with ease.

aristocrat_1_by_giorunog-d3hda4f.jpg

Eurasia is also slightly less psychotic when it comes to torture and waging war on its own people. Their prisons are bafflingly evil, yes, but you'd rather be in a Eurasian death camp than in a Panamerican human factory farm. And they don't nuke themselves.

Finally, Leon Viyeta has a very powerful cult of personality around him, and he makes sure that, if everyone is stupid about all else, they at least know who rules them. Panamerica always plays the Angkar role.

Nazbols also prove to be extremist iconoclasts, destroying all artwork and monuments they can get their hands on. However, they don't try to beat the arts out of their people. They just redirect the arts. So the Mona Lisa and Sistine Chapel? Destroyed. Eiffel Tower and Parthenon? Forever lost. But the people could potentially recreate things like them if they were given the chance. Which they won't be. Not until they're liberated.

The Brotherhood were also iconoclasts, but even they are starting to forget what American art and monuments looked like. Only the few living Elders remember things like the Statue of Liberty or Mount Rushmore or the St. Louis Arch. And because the Panamericans are being devolved, they simply won't have the ability to create these things even if they're liberated, unless they're liberated soon to save the last living "civilized" people.

Besides these slight variances, the two superstates are identical.

Meki and Annie in Eurasia: they're denounced as enemies of the people and unpersoned, as usual.

Meki and Annie in Panamerica: all wealth expropriated, forced into poverty, and 'utilized' by the Brotherhood. So to be honest, absolutely no difference as to what happens to them, except Meki actually would justify the Eurasian experience by saying it's the class war in action, despite the fact the Nazbols only pretend to care about class struggle. Panamerica doesn't deal with nonsense like that. Since they aren't part of the Brotherhood, they don't have a chance.

So how would the rest of the world react to these two psychosadistic totalitarian states?

"Holy shit, Orwell was right!"

Everyone would be waiting to see if there's endless war between them all. Instead, there's just skirmishes between Panamerica and Eurasia because they know they're the ones who will be bent over if they try to fuck the Free World.

Eastasia and Oceania (which is a loose confederation of allied states, including the Arabian Republic and Brazilian Federation) remain very close allies, always ready to go to war against these psychostates should the need arise. They don't let the irony go unrecognized: "We've always been at war with Eurasia". How true.

The unholy, Satanic, strange horrors that come out of the cities, towns, villages, and prisons of Panam and Eurasia lets every sapient life form (human, transhuman, AI, whatever) realize they're dealing with the darkest ever. They don't know what to do to stop it because, even though they could easily defeat these powers, what do they do with the tortured and brainwashed masses?

tl;dr: Panamericans are feral, while Eurasians are medieval.

Also, I said "two totalitarian hells". Then I kept in North Korea. So I guess there are three.

North Korea fires ICBM into the sea; it is shot down via the Eastasian/Oceanian Joint Strategic Orbital Cannon before it begins its parabolic arc downwards. Kim Jong-Pao denounces this "act of aggression" and immediately orders 100,000 troops to the DMZ. All weapons are pointed at Seoul, and war games begin.

Eastasian military forces are put on maximum alert. As one of the world's last two totalitarian states, North Korea is sort of a time capsule to a distant past. Most of its citizens still live in poverty, and the technological state of the nation seems forever stuck in the First Cold War, usually described as being "right out of the 1960s."

The only reason why no one has actually invaded North Korea is because they feared two things.

1) The damage to Seoul, one of the world's wealthiest cities and a major economic hub

2) The influx of brainwashed refugees that would have nowhere to go.

However, thanks to a relatively recent technological innovation— the Electrostatic Force Field— any artillery that can be fired will be deflected. The only reason why it hadn't been used is because the field also prevents oxygen from leaving or entering, which means those inside would be afforded a limited amount of time to breathe. Of course, AI has figured out all the logistics, and has drawn up a plan for action.

And everyone knows the real reason why they're about to destroy the Kims. For a century now, North Korea's been seen as a joke. They talk big, but no one takes them seriously. We know they could issue some serious damage, but nothing existentially threatening. However, the fate of North Korea was sealed in 2022, not because of anything they did, but because of events unfolding thousands of miles away. When the United States of America collapsed and came under the control of an enigmatic ultra-fascist known only by his Orwellian moniker, "Brother Number One", the world's heart skipped a beat. Brother #1 and his inner circle, the Brotherhood, turned America into the most horrifying dystopia ever known to man, and their brand of totalitarianism surpassed even that of the North Korean's.

Many of the same issues that plagued the debate around North Korea could also be found with Panamerica, except on an exponentially larger scale. North Korea's population never climbed above 30 million, whereas that many people might be killed off in a single week in Panamerica.

When Eastasia activated its mechanized military force and struck Pyongyang, they knew they were merely roleplaying, not even doing the dress rehearsal but roleplaying, the eventual catastrophe that was going to be the liberation of Panamerica. Some doubted it could be done. Three generations had passed since the rise of the Brotherhood, and whatever was left of civilized humanity inside the prison-state had surely been extinguished.

The last Elder to come out of Panamerica was a man named Edgar Smith, back in 2082. He was 79 years old and on the verge of death due to a disease the rest of the world had long since cured and forgotten about— cancer, particularly of the lungs. The story he told of Panamerican life was different from that of Abraham William's, who had described life in the dystopia just 19 years prior. Williams said that Panamericans believed they were always at war with two other superstates and that the Brotherhood had always existed, and that most people who weren't incarcerated were living as brainwashed worker drones.

Smith, however, says that he doesn't remember the last time he came across any "intelligent" people. The vast majority of Panamericans were now feral, and the few who weren't didn't at all believe they were forever at war with two other superstates. In fact, they didn't believe any other superstates existed at all, and only Panamerica existed.

By 2082, Smith said, any hope for saving the Panamerican people was gone. Not only had the masses lost behavioral modernity, but many had even lost the ability to create fire. They behaved like you'd expect proto-humans to behave. Intelligence is no longer measured by things like college degrees or genius skills, but instead if one can create tools or has enough creativity to deliberately spark a fire.

After the Second Korean War came to a close, Eastasia worked to rehabilitate emigrating North Koreans, as well as establish order. The Koreas reunified, and a humanitarian catastrophe was averted.

That's when everyone realized what they were up against. The North Korean elite weren't like the Brotherhood. They didn't try turning their people into animals. They didn't want their people to suffer.

The Brotherhood does. Their whole goal was to make as many people suffer. So when the world descends upon Panamerica, they will be fighting a war they simultaneously won and lost before it began.

It's going to hurt. And Panamerica is very secretive, so they know they're probably not in the know as to just how far gone the place really is; they've only heard the testimony of refugees and escapees. That was bad enough.

Next post: the war is easy enough; the aftermath is much more difficult to deal with.

And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

So the war against Panam is swift. The world unites to launch an airstrike on the suspected capital city, a place known as "City #23", and the shock troopers move in. It's not a prolonged war either. All it takes is some transformer drones flying down from aerial motherships and unloading around the cities. The hopelessly outdated Panam military is powerless against them. Several ASI stationed throughout Eurasia manage to smash the digital defenses of Panam's mechanized military and shut them down. The humans of Panam have so little military training that they don't even know what to do against these invaders.

The war is over in just two days. To the Panamericans, it seemed like they just got invaded by aliens. Out of nowhere came nigh-magical, self-transforming ships made of a strange, unfathomable material. Their weapons seemed immaterial, and the Panamerican forces were decimated no matter what they threw at them.

Eurasian forces scoured America to find the Brotherhood and Brother Number One, but it seemed like they had slipped away for good.

East Asian forces attacked the west coast, and met up with Eurasian forces in the midwest. At least, in places where they actually could meet.

Brazilian forces moved in, taking Panama and storming up Central America until they met both international forces in Mexico.

With Panamerica now a fallen state, the international league of nations divvie up the continent, creating smaller states for the sake of establishing order.

So why are you here, reading this? I know why you're here, reading this. Everyone's reading this for one reason. Welp! Time to satisfy your cravings.

The Global Response To The Panamerican Horrors

People watch live feeds of videograms from Panamerica and vomit. Humans, transhumans, posthumans, artificial intelligences— everyone drops upon the sight of the blackened, nightmarish, shockingly evil depravity left by the Brotherhood.
People 60 years ago knew something dark was about to happen in America. No one could have known how far beyond inhuman the horrors would go.

The civilized world can't believe what it's seeing. It can't be human. No, this can't have been done by humans...

The world's AI are trying to make heads or tails of it all the same.

How do you make sense of something like this? You don't. It's just something that exists outside of understanding. These kinds of things happen ever so often throughout history.
How did it get so bad, though? Is it because no one cared to stop it? No, that's not it.

The world wanted it to stop. The world didn't even know what was going on until late in Panamerica's history, and we wanted it to stop. We just... couldn't make it stop. We just didn't know how to make it...

It's the AI that is first able to understand what happened and why, only on account of their radically advanced thought processes.

There are just so many people who refuse to believe it really did happen. No, there must be a reason why.

This isn't something a charity concert can fix. This isn't even something the world's most advanced AI could rectify. Traditional methods of coping, rebuilding, and revising won't do any damn's worth of good.
And maybe that's why Brother #1 and the Brotherhood did what they did. Just to fuck with the world. Maybe they all lived for the sake of today, for the sake of seeing that collective look of shock and horror when their glorious little "experiment" finally got uncovered.

.
.
.

People had been calling Panamerica an Orwellian fascist state for decades, ever since it formed in fact. And how could they not when it was led by someone named "Brother Number One?"
As far back as 2022, when people heard that America had fallen and its government had been replaced by a totalitarian oligarchy, we held a morbid fascinating in wondering just how Orwellian America could get. After all, technology had surpassed the capabilities of Orwell's Hell. We didn't just create telescreens, we were willingly bringing them into our homes. We didn't just create a Ministry of Love, we had surpassed it. It didn't feel Orwellian because it we had a bastard mixture of various dystopias, and then we dared to throw a eutopian existence on top. The fact was, humans wouldn't fit into the mold of literary horror stories because of our inherent individuality, our sapient nature. We were too obsessed with pleasure to be ruled by fear, and we lived too deeply in fear to believe in a world of pleasure.

If actual Orwellian totalitarians wanted to impose their will, they would have to make adjustments. Not to themselves and their system, but to their subjects.

The first hint things were going to be different was when, even after the cessation of hostilities in 2026, no one— not even foreign intelligence agencies— knew who was running things stateside. All we had was that damn name, "Brother Number One." It seemed someone was running things. We just didn't know who.
And then, in 2026, it changes. It's no longer just Brother Number One. Now it's the Brotherhood. Brother Number One is merely the first in line— the First Citizen, so to speak. The Premier Proletarian. Someone beyond understanding. Every guess as to the identities of this oligarchy was just that— a guess.

Everyone thought the dictator of Panam had established a massive cult of personality, that he was the Dear Leader of a new fascist order. Yet actual insights into the regime offered to clues as to who ruled. No pictures, no names, nothing. Not even propaganda. In the pantheon of totalitarian regimes, it was utterly bizarre— but not unique.
A very similar thing occurred in Cambodia in the 1970s. The Khmer Rouge had assumed power in 1975, and it wasn't until several years later that anyone knew it. The ruling regime was referred to only as the 'Angkar'. And the clincher— Pol Pot was referred to as 'Brother Number One'.

Whomever the Brotherhood was, they clearly took notes from the world's most extreme regimes.

And then the reign of silence began. Panam became a black hole, totally cut off from the outside world. No diplomatic relations, no trade, no tourism...

Now, so many decades later, the world looks upon what is done.
.
.
.
The nature of the Brotherhood's dehumanization experiments shocked the very core of the world. Even the AI were taken by surprise. Ever since Williams said it was happening, everyone has generally accepted that it's possible, but some didn't want to believe it. Smith's independent verification seemed to support the claim.
But now we can see with our own eyes. And it's much, much worse than we thought.

Images like these are very common sights throughout Panamerica. Humans who have never been raised in a civilized environment have reverted into a primal, animalistic state.

Expeditions went into Panamerica, exercising extreme caution. Though people tried to care for these feral humans, they proved too rowdy to tame. They rejected all attempts to clothe them, threw away food they deemed suspicious, and attacked and even sexually assaulted others completely unprovoked. In one case, a teenaged boy bent over a female-styled researcher AI and attempted to mate with her, not understanding that such behavior was unacceptable. These humans would engage in sexual acts seemingly at random, in a manner similar to bonobos, and never withheld their base desires. However, they also had many behaviors of chimpanzees, becoming wildly violent without any understandable provocation.

You could tell when humans were raised by animals or were left to fend for themselves entirely. Those who lived with animals clearly had been imprinted by those animals' behaviors.

In some areas, feral humans had been collected and displayed in makeshift zoos. These zoos had been abandoned, and the ferals inside had either escaped or turned on each other for food. It very strongly resembled Planet of the Apes come to life.
Expeditions easily found the areas where the Brotherhood organized hunts of ferals. They looked like any other game hunt area, except they were marked off with an added game— feral humans.

It was genius, wasn't it? The easiest way to control a population is to completely dehumanize them. The Brotherhood still had "civilized" humans living in the world. 'Civilized' if you could call them that.

There was one young woman named #777.9320.2. She had actually smitten the world because of her fair, youthful beauty. However, it was clear just from spending a minute with her that she was, by absolutely no means, fit for living in an enlightened society. Aside from only speaking the ultra-highly restricted Yinglis language, her attachments to civilization were only evident in how she held herself. She at least resembled a normal person. In fact, she was very much devoid of all compassion, of all morality, of all reason. She held nonsensical beliefs, even contradictory beliefs. It wasn't just doublethink, but honest to god octuplethink. And there was no love in her. "Dot Two" as she came to be called, she spoke like a sociopath. There wasn't even an attempt a political correctness either. What few offensive slurs she could manage in her stilted monkey speech, she casually tossed out into the world.
She could not be trusted around other living things. It seemed as if she had been programmed to kill and maim, to cause destruction. She would eagerly boil alive babies and the elderly solely for their meat, or their skin, or their bones. That's how Betas camped and had fun, through sadistic games of devastation.
She acted so laughably and cartoonishly evil at times that a few people even thought it to all be an act. Not at all— this is what the Brotherhood bred. Those who managed to hold onto their humanity died with it in whatever furnace or sludge they were tossed into years ago. Only the most evil survived.
Dot Two was not the exception. She was the rule, and there were no exceptions. It's a sad fact that all her initial adorers had to face: Dot Two was evil. If evil is a point of evil, then she came damn close to being evil by all points of view. And she isn't even unique amongst the Betas.

There were idiot drones. Millions of them, in fact. However, they were so mentally challenged that they could scarcely string a comprehensible sentence together. Any who displayed creativity or individual thought had been dealt with already.

It was as complete of control as you can possibly imagine. Panamerican society was separated into three categories— the Animals, the Evil, and the Idiots. There were no survivors of any other caste. It seems Smith was right: the Alphas had outlived their usefulness long ago and had been disposed of, betrayed by the same system that told them they were special.

Oh, but then the expeditions stumble across the human factory farms... At which point what was blackened and hateful enters a new territory far beyond human words to describe it. The arrested Betas react just as you'd think they would. We tried doing to them what we did to the Nazis— forcing them to see what they had done. Making them tour through the human factory farms and death camps.
But you see, the Nazis were actually regular people. Regular people who held messed up beliefs, yes, but regular people. Thus, they felt strong emotional responses and intense regret and shame over what they did.

The Betas, such as Dot Two and her classmates, they were greatly amused. Some had no idea of the existence of human factory farms, and the thought was hilarious. The only thing they regretted was that they wouldn't get the time to enjoy them.
They didn't really fear mental rectification or execution. They couldn't think that far ahead anyway, and their morality was so shot that they probably didn't think they would be punished. Why be awarded or punished for something that comes naturally? Imagine if space aliens came down to Earth and threatened to imprison, perhaps even kill anyone who ever wrote a joke, engaged in comedy, or laughed at something funny. It wouldn't make sense to us. Just like how this wouldn't make sense to them.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg! Just look at the deadened masses of wastelands, the deadlands that were once forests and prairies, the dystopian seas of sludge and grunge whose very fumes could kill. All those volcanoes that had been triggered. How Yellowstone had been partially triggered and exploded with 400,000 slaves trapped in the caldera purely for the Betas' amusement. The nuclear hellscapes that may never be habitable again, where cobalt-salted neutron bombs were carpet bombed multiple times, often several times a month at the worst of it, over civilian populations.

That year, 2085, couldn't stop getting worse for the people of Earth (and our space colonies). Just seeing how awful Panam was drilled it into our heads that we could have done something. When we see the areas of Panam that were carpet-nuked, the cages that held thousands who were nuked as punishment, the human factory farms that ensnared possibly hundreds of millions, the crematoriums that incinerated billions and created black blizzards of human smog, the hellholes of human/animal experimentation and torture fests, the hunts of feral humans, all these horrors, it was too much.

What kind of depraved mind could inflict this upon people? Alas, they'll never know. We hunted with increasing vigor Brother Number One and his Brotherhood, but we just couldn't find them. Is it possible they never actually existed? No, that makes no sense. But how can they possibly escape our notice? With all our modern technology...? It's like losing an airplane.

It just happens. We want to bring them to justice, but we don't know if we ever will.

The Panamerican people cannot be rehabilitated. It will take dystopian levels of neurocontrol to reverse the effects of a dystopia, and some just don't want to do it. It offends our post-liberal sensibilities. We knew this was going to be hell, but even Hell would be better to deal with at this rate.

The High Octane Nightmare Fuel that fires everyone's nightmares, though, was the global initiative's initial plan. What was it? Knock out the oligarchy and let the government collapse. Allow the oppressed masses to rise up and free themselves. A noble plan indeed. But they were told by defectors that this plan would never work. The Panam masses aren't like the North Korean masses. They don't yearn for freedom from oppression because they cannot fathom the concept of freedom at all, let alone freedom from oppression. And as we've seen, who are the people who would actually lead the glorious Revolution? Who are the only humans still capable of higher thought, no matter how stunted it may be?

The Betas.

The Betas are demons in human skin, humans who have out-devilled the Devil. They are pure evil. They are a caste of pure, unadulterated evil. Many of them probably thought the Brotherhood and Brother Number One were being far too kind in their methods. That was the extent of their free thoughts, that the Brotherhood was too weak, too kind, too liberal.

The Betas would have been even worse than the Brotherhood. They were the ones the rest of the world was willing to let run Panam. These ultrasadistic beasts of humans, far more feral than any of the feral peoples, would have been given control over a nuclear-armed state. They wouldn't have had the grace to know not to piss off the rest of the world. If needbe, they would have cobalt-salted the oceans and detonated weapons all across their own atmosphere, killing themselves but also damning the planet.

Panam had possession of well over 2 million nuclear weapons, over 1 million of which being the equivalent of 10 kilotons of TNT. They have one weapon, B1, that scares everyone else in the world. No one knew it existed. No one could fathom that the Brotherhood could have actually created it. If you didn't believe they were insane before (somehow), you'd know now.

The B1 Bomb is the most powerful warhead ever created. So big, it's not actually a warhead. It's a network of fusion bombs.

How powerful is it? Comparable to Tsar Bomba? No. Bigger. The Backyard Bomb? Bigger.

Remember how powerful the Chicxulub asteroid was? That was the asteroid that ended the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. It struck the Earth with the force of 100 teratons of TNT.

The B1 Bomb is even more powerful than that. All estimates claim that, when detonated, it would explode with the force of 700 teratons of TNT. This is enough to turn the entire surface of Earth to radioactive molten material. There would be a mile-high tsunami of magma spreading across the planet at hypersonic speeds. The atmosphere would be ignited as million-degree plasma expanded, complete with a thunderclap that would, itself, rank at around 10 on the Richter Scale.

And if that wasn't bad enough, it too was cobalt-salted. Very heavily cobalt-salted. So much so that, coupled with the molten surface, Earth would temporarily become the equivalent of a miniature radio star.

The Brotherhood clearly didn't want to detonate the B1 Bomb. It would've interfered with their antihuman experiments in Panamerica. They wanted to cause slow, prolonged suffering, not end the world.

The Betas, however, lacked all pretenses of powerhunger. They also lacked the ability to think beyond the moment. They couldn't fathom that they would also cease to exist, and even if they could, they'd still do it. All they would see is a Big Red Button that would end everything, setting back life on Earth by at least 500 million years. It would kill everything in a big bang. How fun is that?

Goddamn, they almost let these demons have their way...! Just goes to show what they're dealing with. There is no reasoning with them. Imagine that. Imagine that, after all we've done, how far we've come, that even after we reached the Singularity, that it would all go out in such an inglorious way. As Earth died and the echoes of humanity faded into the cold, black recesses of the universe, anyone who cared enough to listen would only hear our cries of despair at how far we had fallen, despite how high we had risen. It turns out we were both: Risen Apes and Fallen Angels.

In a perverse way, this is what the Brotherhood wanted. This would be their dark legacy. All this for power.

All this for the love of Brother Number One.

And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

The End! I'm done! This is too fucking depressing to work on anymore.

I've done it, I've created the ultimate Orwellian horror. Maybe I could go a little further by turning the whole world into this, but the point is: I don't fucking want to. There are two maps up above that are already done for you. There are a plethura of 1984 maps to work with as well. Just turn Panamerica into Oceania, kept National Bolshevik Eurasia, and fuck up Eastasia. There you go. 2084: even darker than 1984.

Now that I've scratched that pulsating itch of creating a totalitarian dystopia, I can move on towards creating eutopias and much more light-hearted dystopias.

Done! Over! That's all, folks!

And then out of no where, Korea decides that its had enough. The declare war on Khmer Asia and blitzkrieg through the entire nation. Khmer Asia capitulates and North Korea continues to liberate people all over the world. Soon all but America is under Korean control. The Koreans have seen the horrors of pan america and decide the only way to fix this is the bad way. The launch nukes all over pan-america. Pan America cannot retaliate due to Korea destroying all their anti-missile stations with drones. America is nuked back into the stone age. The Koreans rejoice and the Kim Jong family finally resigns and Korea because a republic and renames it self to The World Order.  They also give all people equal rights and destroy the class system. Then they colonise space forever and humans expand forever.

Im sorry but it had to turn out good in the end.
