I especially like that Japan did away with the pesky 'p' in their name. (No, that was a typo.)

(Wish I could just post the image like the rest of you but it's telling me I 'don't have permission to use that extention in this community'.)

That was the same issue I was having Rec. I think I got it working now though.

I've been meaning to make this one for a while.

Cold War II: Shyamalan Version
fz2ffpG.png

2016: the US elections devolve into complete and absolute anarchy. Revolution begins, and Washington D.C. falls. Though there are two main forces— the Grandsons of Liberty (right-wing, libertarian-capitalist) and the Pentagon forces (trying to establish a military dictatorship), a small group of Marxist-Leninists manage to take Washington D.C. They have their fingers on the nuclear launch codes, and demand loyalty. They promise they won't prosecute any generals who defect to their side. Well, it's whatcha gotta do.

2017-2020: ultraviolent civil war. The Grandsons of Liberty ain't takin' the Dictatorship of the Proletariat sitting down, so they fight. Some generals also refuse to align with the new party, the Worker's Vanguard Party of America, better known as "Wovan". The revolution and subsequent civil war get ultraviolent, and the death toll stacks up quickly. 1,000 dead in the first week; 20,000 dead by June; 100,000 dead by New Year's; 1.2 million dead by New Year's 2018; 17 million dead by New Year's 2019. The Wovanists refused to give the reactionaries any ground, while the Grandsons refused to compromise with the new ruling party at all.

In 2018, during the Wovanists' darkest and weakest period, the map looked like this
868TGIG.png
(God DAMN there are a ton of counties/parishes in America!)
The New Confederacy, which allied with the Grandsons of Liberty, was expected to badly lose by all countries who watched the civil war erupt. Instead, by the end of 2017, it looked like it was the Wovanists who were destined to lose.

By 2019, though...
n3LCwUb.png

The Wovanists were not afraid to nuke the "bourgeoisie bastards" who dared to resist them (now that they had knocked out all Confederate nukes, mind you).

By February 2020, the Civil War had ended with a brutal defeat for the Confederates for a second time. Their first capital in Houston, Texas, had been sieged. Their backup capital in New Orleans, Louisiana had been nuked. Their government had been arrested, and the insurgency that continued to fight was beaten back into the Appalachian mountains. When it looked like the communists had won, a massive wave of emigration began as people fled from the Confederacy to escape persecution. The Grandsons' militia collapsed, and the Confederate economy did the same. Hyperinflation ensued, strikes began, and the war effort came to a screeching halt.
The Wovanists secured and militarized the Mexican-American border to prevent any more from escaping, vowing to hold the Confederacy to task for "war crimes against humanity".

The Wovanists made sure that the South would never rise again by beginning a process of "Cultural Revolution" to destroy anything and everything the Southern states held dear. They established Studentries, justifying it by calling it "the ultimate act of socialist expropriation"— you could expropriate the capitalists' property, but as long as they still had their children, they could always raise a new generation of rebels. So what better way to quash any future rebellion than by expropriating their children, raising them to be the ultimate Marxists?

On March 19th, 2020, the Wovanists officially renamed the United States of America to something that shocked the world— the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. They retroactively established soviets, communes, kibbutzes, and cooperatives, finishing with a Grand Soviet headed in New York City. Globally, it became known as the American Soviet Union— notable by its initials, "ASU", the reverse of "USA".

In 2021, suspiciously powerful coups in Canada and Mexico led these countries to join the ASU. In 2022, a coup in Greenland led to the same. The Soviet Union, thus, became the largest country on Earth. Its population was 540 million, and it possessed well over three thousand nuclear weapons. By 2026, it raised the largest standing army on Earth— 20 million active troops, with 100 million passive troops. They were led by a man named Jeremiah Smith, a former farmer from Alabama who was once as conservative Christian capitalist as they came, only to be radicalized by Leftism after becoming disillusioned with the Right in the late 2000's.

NATO lost their most powerful member, but it's not like Russia was going to make any moves. Indeed, Russia itself was far too stunned by this laughable development, moreso than any other country on Earth.

After all— weren't they the Soviets? And wasn't "soviet" their word? Why not the Union of Council Socialist Republics? It's like America was trying too hard or something.

A Tri-State global order arose. NATO and BEA were adversaries, as usual, but both had a common enemy— the Soviet Union and the Chicago Pact. The ASU quickly engaged in Red Imperialism, spreading Marxism-Leninism-Smithism throughout South America, Africa, and even Oceania (though with limited success).

By 2029, things had become so damn backwards. The former Confederacy, the former Bible Belt, had subsequently become one of the most radically pro-Communist regions on Earth.
Pu5tO2E.jpg

By 2029, that old Alternate History concept had come true.

Russia vs. the Soviet Union. Capitalist Russia vs. Communist America.

Premier Proletarian, Jeremiah Smith, held the 8th Communist International in 2029 in Havana, Cuba, to honor the late Fidel Castro (who had lived long enough to see Soviet America but not the present situation. The Chicago Pact established a common goal to turn all of the Americas red. Brazil was, by far, the largest and most staunch hold-out. However, they were not nuclear-armed. An invasion would be costly, but manageable. Afterwards, they would turn their attention to Africa and the Middle East.

China and Russia never intended for the ASU to be so wildly uncontrollable. They supported the Wovanists because they believed they could turn America into their own puppet state, but you'd think these two countries would know better by now. You don't just "control" a powerful, nuclear-armed communist state. The American Soviet Union resisted both NATO and BEA, and presented headaches for both.

In 2030, the first major hot spot in this new, bafflingly backwards cold war had begun as government of Brazil "mysteriously" collapsed following a coup, and the American Soviet Union moved in.

Russia and China acted, sending troops into Brazil to resist communist expansion. They warned NATO that they had to join on their side, lest a domino effect would begin, and the entire world would be under the thumb of the American Soviet Union.

"Smithism", after all, had become the 21st century Stalinism. Jeremiah Smith, in power ever since 2020, believed intensely in Red Imperialism, that the ASU must expand and create "Marxist colonies" if it wants to survive. If this meant a nuclear standoff with the West and East, then so be it. If anything, a nuclear World War III would usher in communism even more quickly.

These kinds of words were the worst kinds to hear, because it meant Smith was not sane. He would be more than willing to let the world explode if it meant his ideal world order could be achieved. He was a threat to world peace.  And his actions in Brazil proved that he wasn't kidding. So NATO assessed the situation and realized that it was true, that the only way to prevail would be to ally with their former enemies.

2031: NATO dissolves, joining the Beijing-Eurasian Alliance, dedicated to protecting capitalism and democracy. Everyone joked with Russia about how ironic it was to be back in a cold war against America, except this time on the side of capitalism. The war in Brazil escalates quickly, becoming a modern day Vietnam. Despite their best efforts, the BEA could not protect Brazil, and by 2038, after a long, drawn out, and tiring war, Brasília fell to communist forces. The BEA retreated, instead deciding to strengthen themselves against communist aggression rather than halt communist expansion elsewhere.

Of course, it was awkward that a few of the countries in BEA were nominally communist themselves— including the host country, China. The Chinese Communist Party, however, distanced itself from American communism by proclaiming its loyalties to market socialism. North Korea was the wild card, always threatening to join the Chicago Pact but never going through with it due to being surrounding by the superpower, China, and the resurgent world powers, Japan and South Korea. China was no longer going to tolerate the DPRK if they chose to attack South Korea or Japan, vowing to side with South Korea even if South Korea attacked first. It is this betrayal that keeps North Korea on the fence between a suspicious and hostile BEA and a welcoming, if untrustworthy Chicago Pact— if the DPRK joined the Chicago Pact, they would be forced to declare their total allegiance to Jeremiah Smith, who had long harbored deep hatred of North Korea and its "bastardization of Marxism-Leninism" known as Juche.

The last hold-out of capitalism in the Americas was the tiny nation of the Dominican Republic. The ASU left it alone, more as a novelty to show their communist comrades about the exploitative effects of capitalism as opposed to the liberated effects of communism. Of course, their intention was to set up a blockade around the DR and force it to wallow in poverty and corruption, exaggerating the effects of capitalism. The BEA recognized there was little they could do, and left the imprisoned nation alone.

By 2039, it seemed like the global Dual-State order had become firmly established. BEA was far wealthier than the Chicago Pact— it possessed 8 of the 10 largest economies on Earth, including the #1 largest economy, China, and the #2 largest economy, India, and the #3 largest economy, Japan, and the #4 largest economy, Germany, and the #5 largest economy, Russia. The American Soviet Union came in 6th, while Mexico came in 9th. They had staved off World War III, and the death of Jeremiah Smith in 2040 further eased tensions. His replacement, Chelsea Clinton, rose to power in 2042 and further reduced fears of World War III. Instead, Cold War II was in full swing as tensions between BEA and the Chicago Pact kept the two circling each other.

Capitalism prevailed in 1991. But would this new conflict prove to be communism's ultimate victory?

n1wQHA0.png

As for how the ASU remains in power? Harsh brutality, purges, and a totalitarian system of government. The Confederacy did it to itself— the Civil War gave the Wovanists reason to establish totalitarianism, to safeguard the revolution, and they kept the civil war going in the minds of their citizens by claiming "Bourgeois Agents of Cultural Destruction" were always at work trying to undermine the revolution, and that's why they had to accept pervasive surveillance, a secret police force, and a complete intolerance of any dissent.

Hate to break it to you but New England would never join Canada in a breakup of the US scenario. For starters they think of themselves as the place where the US has it's foundations and it's key to their self identity.

I can imagine them even calling themselves the True united state of America. The nearest comparison I could think of in a split like that would be New Zealand and Aussies Breaking all ties to England. England Does just then become French because they are the closest large country that could absorb them. England just becomes England and the Australia and New Zealand become formerly held territories.

Second of all New Hampshire is home to the freestate project, and attracts Libertarians beside that as well. And the general population of NH is not far off Libertarian in most degrees anyway. I'd expect New England if it ever did break from the greater US, and decided the Claim of the Name US was not for them would see attempts to organise itself into a Confederation of City states With more than a few Leaning heavily on Libertarian values.

Actually, i made this map just for lulz. I don't think US will disintegrate in any foreseeable future. What may really happen by 2050 is IMHO:

1) Puerto-Rico becomes 51st state.

2) Those tiny Pacific islands becomes 52nd state (with name "Oceania" or something like that)

3) Accession of Canada as 13 new states (highly unlikely, but not impossible)

I Accidentally Fuck't Everyone Up

So I've decided to combine all my dystopias into one big-ass nightmare. Like, a shockingly nightmarish situation where there's no hope anymore. Okay, maybe there's a *little* hope. And it lies with North Korea. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is the world's freest, most democratic state circa 2047.

Sigh. At least Joe believes there's hope.

There's Antihumanist Panamerica, National Bolshevik Eurasia, the Fascist Hellenic Empire, the Islamic State of Babylon, Nazi Africa, and Khmer Asia.

Panamerica, we've already seen has been fucked up back and forth all the way 'round the goddamn moon 'til it can't even stand up straight no'mo'. The Brotherhood has so totally devastated American society that we have regressed into animals while also stuffing people into human factory farms just to amuse the ultra-sadistic Beta caste. All for the Love of Brother Number One. Brother Number One and the Brotherhood are anonymous figures, a societal Keyser Söze— no one knows if they're actually real or fabrications to keep the goons in line.

National Bolshevik Eurasia isn't all that much better. It's basically Red Feudalism that pays a fleeting amount of lip service to communism. The National Bolsheviks have absolutely no ties to morality, whether it be bourgeois morality or revolutionary proletarian morality. The Red Aristocracy adore their power over the peasantry and wouldn't give it up for anything, all the while believing it will eventually fade as they transition into a communist society. The inner elite hold no such delusions, and know they've secured power and will never willingly let it go.

The Fascist Hellenic Empire is the resurrection of Ancient Greece. It does away with our Romantic images of an Enlightened empire of democratic philosophers and instead worships the militant society of Sparta. It's Nazi Germany without any of the Nazis' grace and all of the brutality. Golden Dawn's brand of national fascism is much more thuggish than the Nazis ever were, and they will bring their totalitarian terror to as many places as they possible can, all the while enslaving and/or ethnically cleansing any peoples they deem to be biologically, culturally, and religiously inferior.

The Islamic State couldn't be stopped, and they've established their medieval, brutal, and regressive ideology all across Persia and Mesopotamia, including to the nuclear armed nations of Pakistan and Israel. Despite having been a nation for decades, they've never stopped their ultraviolence. They live off ultraviolence. They've made war and ultraviolence a religion— and they're extremely devout. Their bastardization of Islam is an even more extreme interpretation of Wahhabism that codifies Arab ultranationalism and a complete obliteration of the self in the name of Allah. To kill one is a mercy; to kill millions is an honor.

Nazi Africa sounds entirely counterintuitive, but it was born in the Congo from an ultra-right Catholic pastor who was obsessed with creating an African master race that could control the entire planet. With no outside interference from the collapsing industrialized world, he was able to procure nuclear weapons and steamroll over his neighboring countries until he was able to establish an African empire hellbent on creating Fascism with Congolese Characteristics. Except this fascism wasn't just traditional fascism, but legitimate national-socialism. The White world would usually fear a nuclear-armed fascist African superstate, but when you add in a hyper-eugenicist army of African supermen, even the Yellow man believes there's too much at stake to be passive. So naturally, they're the perennial enemy of all the other racial supremacist states. They don't mind, for they've glorified war and believe themselves to be on a "Darwinist crusade" to exterminate all inferior races.

Khmer Asia is Asia's answer to Panamerica. It started in Cambodia once more as renegade elements of the Khmer Rouge managed to return to power following economic collapse. However, this time they were able to defeat Vietnamese and Laotian forces and conquer the entire Indochinese subcontinent, and then engage in an overland war against China. This is when the world realized just how far behind the West China really was, as the Chinese military posted defeat after defeat against the fanatical Khmer army, until the Khmer forces reached Beijing. Japan and South Korea tried to fight, but they were subdued themselves. The war was the bloodiest in human history, leaving 300 million dead and radicalizing even more to adopt the Khmer Rouge way of agrarian socialism. Just like the first time, the Angkar ruled society with no one knowing who was actually running things— this time taking notes from Panamerica on how to perfect anonymous totalitarianism. When China and Japan fell to their rule, the Khmer Rogue prepared to start a war with Korea, but they had exhausted their military by this point fighting India to the point of the latter's collapse. They left the Korean peninsula alone. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea took over South Korea and unified the peninsula under Juche rule.

The last democratic state standing was Australia, and they didn't last long before succumbing to Asia's influences.

So by 2047, this was the state of the world— a mess of totalitarian states forever at war with each other and themselves, each more twisted than the last.

Also, East Timor isn't coloured on the map sooo rip.

East Timor doesn't exist in this timeline.

Anymore, I mean. My mistake was coloring in the Maldives, because they don't exist either anymore. And I couldn't do much to add holes to Malaysia and Indonesia, since vast parts of it are gone as well.

From least to most repressive:

  1. Democratic People's Republic of Korea
  2. Fascist Hellenic Empire
  3. National Bolshevik Eurasia
  4. Khmer Asia
  5. Islamic State of Babylon
  6. National Socialist African Union
  7. Antihumanist Panamerica

The DPRK possesses even more total control over its nation, making them even more authoritarian than they are now, and they constantly suffer famines and shortages. Despite this, they are the most democratic, liberal, and open society on Earth circa 2050.

The Fascist Hellenic Empire is a bit more repressive than the DPRK on all fronts, and if their 2050 incarnation were around today, they'd regularly list dead last on any measure of press freedom, human rights, open elections, anything we see as being a sign of a progressive society.

And these are the two freest states on Earth.

As for the most repressive state on Earth? Well... things aren't fine, I'll tell you that.

1) Panamerica is growing rather fast, isn't it?

2) What happened to make a bunch of large islands disappear?

In this timeline, they didn't have NATO or the Russia-China alliance to stop them from expanding. Since Eurasia is too preoccupied with their own total collapse into barbarity, the US/Panamerica was able to blitzkrieg all the way to the southernmost tip of South America, and even just a bit into Antarctica. It's not like Brazil could last long against the raw power of the United States military— and that's just considering a "liberal" war between us, where we abide by the Geneva Convention and choose against needless cruelty. Panamerica is a wild, savage sadist that revels in suffering, so yeah, all of South America gets wrecked before it could possibly collapse into totalitarianism itself.

In the "official" timeline, only the US fell, while all the other nations regained stability and thus were able to stop us through a combined effort.

To answer your question:

Panamerica already engages in nuclear genocide, so what's stopping other nations? In Khmer Asia's case, they went way too overboard. They sent all their 'Enemies of the People' to special places and bombed the soulful fuck out of 'em. Makes good use of all those nuclear weapons we've been stockpiling, and also acts as pleasant entertainment for those amused by big explosions and mass murder. And when you're fanaticized by an ultra-extreme ideology, you want to see people die. Khmer Asia is one of such places where hyper fanaticism reigns supreme.

Also, west Oceania/southeast Asia is fulla Muslims. You've heard about how Malaysia has the world's largest Muslim population, right? Even more than the Middle East? To the Angkar, Muslims are not human and are degenerative to Asia's success. So dropping a few megatons here and there and salting the place with radiation to kill them all isn't out of the question.

1) Okay, but what stops them from going further?

2) Being reduced to radioactive glass is certainly believable, but those islands literally ceasing to exist stretches credibility unless you're bringing scifi superweapons into the mix. And we don't take places off maps just because they're uninhabited piles of rock.

The other totalitarian nations, which are always at war with each other. It's not like Panamerica isn't trying— they've even taken New Zealand, after all.

Also, you're underestimating the power of hydrogen bombs. We very much did wind up vaporizing whole islands during the testing of our very own sci-fi superweapons we call thermonuclear fusion bombs, and that was back in the '50s.

And it doesn't help that the Maldives are already threatened by rising sea levels, to the point evacuations are taking place. Drop 150 megatons on it, and it's done.

World Peace

We've seen what World War I and World War II were like, and we live in constant fear of World War III. But let's turn that around and imagine what World Peace I would be like.
A period of time where there's no military conflict on Earth.

We've been gradually getting closer to such a state. For example, civil and military conflicts used to kill more than 5 million people each decade. Now we've brought it down to the hundreds of thousands each decade range. Not a real big achievement, true, but it's something.
But let's say that, in 2037, something absolutely magic occurs.
The year comes and the year goes... and while there were many deaths due to crime and disease, there were no deaths due to strife, civil war, or military conflict!

You can partially thank the rise of 'prosperity spheres', which is one of the results of mixing nationalism with automation in the 21st century. Nationalism didn't last very long due to the relentless forward march of sci-tech. However, it did lead to greater cooperation with surrounding nations and the inevitable return to globalism wound up being much more prosperous than ever before.

We calmed down, rebuilt, and enjoyed the fruits of the Future. We're still grappling with climate change, but we're doing the best we can do.

The global superpowers are: China, USA, and India. The US has a higher standard of living than China, making up for being 2nd place. But the addition of India has kept China in check, surprisingly. With two superpowers competing with it, the US has tried to gain a stronger hegemony over resources... but it's not working. Brazil is an up and coming world power, as is Russia and Nigeria. They have more than enough power to resist US hegemony, keeping the US in check. It's something like a system of checks and balances, where each superpower keeps an eye on each other, but none of them can gain an absolute advantage over the other. And because of the decentralizing nature of modern technology, war is becoming less and less of an occurrence, to the point there is no war in 2037.

World Peace I lasts 4 years, until 2041. Then a few conflicts break out in the Middle East between Israel and Egypt. More conflicts occur around the world around this time, and it's not until 2052 that World Peace II takes place, this time guarded by artificial intelligence.

Wait, is this a response to my own timeline, someone elses, or something you're creating?
