I keep hearing news about this, I'm going to make a thread.

Inside the ‘Tunnel’ Elon Musk Is Already Digging Under Los Angeles

It’s time to take Elon Musk seriously and literally. After Twitter hints, tidbits, and whining about LA traffic, the serial entrepreneur and budding mole man is digging a tunnel. Well, a hole.

Over the weekend, workers excavated a “test trench” 30 feet wide, 50 feet long, and 15 feet deep on the grounds of SpaceX’s Los Angeles headquarters. Musk calls it the beginning of an experiment. “We’re just going to figure out what it takes to improve tunneling speed by, I think, somewhere between 500 and 1,000 percent,” he said Sunday during a hyperloop design competition at SpaceX. “We have no idea what we’re doing—I want to be clear about that.”

High Elon strikes again!

You wanna know the really messed up thing? In an early draft of Synthetic, I had a chase sequence taking place in a systematic network of tunnels under a city, but I abandoned that because it didn't seem likely that such a thing would exist. (This was actually based on some city I came up with as a kid, to be built when I ruled the world. Or something.) And now. Well. Such a thing is actually coming to be.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk appears to release first picture of his new tunnel boring machine

A few weeks after announcing his intention to launch a new company to build a boring machine and improve tunneling time, Elon Musk appears to have released the first picture of the machine. It could be the first product from what the CEO has been referring to as “The Boring Company”.

Musk, CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX, has been moving fast. Last month, he said that they have made “exciting progress” and at SpaceX’s Hyperloop Pod Competition last weekend, he announced that they started digging a tunnel in front of the company’s headquarters.

At the time, it was only a hole in the parking lot in front of the CEO’s office, but now it looks like they are equipped to turn that hole into a tunnel.

May High Elon shelter us, protect us, and take us to Mars and end our traffic jams. Elon.

Going to have to visit LA once he gets this system (whatever it may be) up and running. Or maybe the first place it will be implemented is Mars? Either way i'll visit both.

Oh that's right:

Elon Musk unveils a parking lot prototype for The Boring Company’s car elevator

The billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk, says he spends only about 2 percent of his time working on tunnels, and some of that time was allotted this week to tweeting about the digging that’s being done on SpaceX’s property in Hawthorne, Calif.
Musk tweeted video clips that highlighted the riggings for a “car/pod elevator” that’s taking shape in an old parking lot. “Should be operating next week,” he said.
In its on-the-scene report, the Daily Breeze says the finishing touches are being put on a roughly 600-foot-long bore pit and tunnel entrance, dug 20 feet beneath the ground-level lot.

I think it's cool, but realistically it's going to be a long time until this becomes feasible in multiple cities. I could see it being implemented in a city that is built from scratch.

It's f*cking unreal. This went from a tweet, to actual construction in less than a year. If only more entrepreneurs were as forward looking as Elon.

I think that's why no one replied. It's all happening so fast that we don't really have much else to say; we'd rather just wait until the next happening while worrying about other things.

That's realistically how we'd respond to the Singularity, now that I think about it. Shit would happen so fast that we'd just clock out and worry more about the latest celeb news, internet meme, or overhyped prize fight while occasionally nodding like toddlers about the last microsecond's sci-tech news.

Does anyone else think that California is probably not the best place to start digging extensive tunnel systems?

I would not like to be in a car, in a tunnel, on a high speed sled when a big quake hits.

Elon Musk shows LA tunnel

Elon Musk released the first picture of the Boring Company’s Los Angeles tunnel.

The Boring company was permitted to dig a tunnel in Los Angeles and Maryland and is working to get permission for a New York to DC tunnel.

Elon Musk says traffic jams will be eliminated with multi-level tunnel networks for cars. The tunnels could also be used for Hyperloop transportation.

It's surreal that they a) actually went ahead with this and b) progress is rocketing along at an insane rate

Elon Musk Will Compete to Build New Chicago Transportation System

In Brief

Musk has officially announced his intentions to compete for a contract to build a high-speed loop in Chicago, through his venture The Boring Company. Not a hyperloop, this railway system will instead use electric pods.
