Could the Universe Be Conscious?

In Brief Physicist Gregory Matloff has published a paper that argues that the entire universe may be capable of consciousness. This concept, called "panpsychism," is speculative, but there are many who wish to perform further research on it.

Yeah, I know, another link from that site.

It's definitely a very interesting philosophical idea, though I'm not very convinced by its scientific validity. It could be the backbone for a new religion, or even an entire family of faiths. Yay, more stuff to dump into my universes.

Seriously, what's with the hate for Futurism.com? I understand that they're somewhat clickbaity, but what's going on with them?

Seriously though, wouldn't having more people interested in futurology be a boon? Instead of complaining, we should take the reins of this opportunity to promote this site using those Futurism has made interested.

Well, for me it was that they're our "competitors" at first, but now some of the stuff they post is just blatant clickbait.

Anyway, I'm all for further inquiry into this field, but personally I find the claim that stars are alive to be ridiculous pseudoscience. However, if the evidence for this ever comes up, I'll gladly swallow my words.

I think it is just another interesting theory with no proof which we should still keep in mind anyway. Because when we look at ourselves at the atomic or molecular level we arent anything special either.

They seem to be of the mind smart phones are a good thing. Despite all the honeypot warning signs.

I didn't know futurism dot crap was hated by anyone other than me. Diaspora seems to worship the thing.

I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with futurism.com from what I've seen of it. I personally prefer singularityhub.com as my primary news source on all topics related to futurism.

Artificial intelligence will reach human levels by around 2029.

Follow that out further to, say, 2045, we will have multiplied the intelligence, the human biological machine intelligence of our civilization a billion-fold.

To be fair, there's some basis for this. After all, aren't we made of stuff from the universe? And aren't we conscious? Therefore, the universe can be conscious, QED.

Ugh. this offends my fanatic materialist outlook.

I'm not going to rehash everything from "the hard problem of consciousness" discussions, (don't worry!)

To sum up: Nothing here is based on any more actual evidence than a stoner turning to his friend and saying "hey man wouldn't it be cool if the whole universe was like conscious and stuff? Stars could like steer their way through the universe, because like, a star is like a brain man, its all connected!"

How would a star even know where it was going? This whole thing is monstrous really. If there are a near infinite number of consciousnesses in the universe then the vast majority must be experiencing total sensory deprivation because they lack any kind of sensory apparatus.

Oh I said as much that I doubt this holds much scientific merit. It's mostly interesting as a potential future religion.
