Asteroid mining is absolutely critical to humanity's future survival.


It's pretty simple. If we continue to extract resources from Earth, eventually they'll run out. This could happen a lot sooner than most people think. On current trends, many common metals will be depleted within a few decades. Deep ocean mining will provide new resources, but it's only a temporary solution, and is very damaging ecologically.


By contrast, even a single asteroid might contain more precious metals than were ever produced in human history. We are talking trillions of dollars here. Not to mention the water and other volatiles that could be useful to the growing space economy.


Planetary Resources are an incredibly bold and forward-looking company, and I really hope they succeed. Maybe we could interview Chris Lewicki for our blog?
