Looks like Sarkozy will go to history as a transitory president. On the other hand, most leaders of European nation-states will soon be mere shadows or figureheads, while real power more and more will be excerted on supranational or corporate levels.

The French are voting in a run-off poll that could see a socialist win a French presidential election for the first time since 1988.

In the first round, socialist Francois Hollande won 28.6% of the vote, ahead of incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy on 26.2%.

I think the result in this election is a pretty foregone conclusion unless a big shocker in the end. The markets have already counted on Hollande winning with making their decision, and they don't seem to be too disturbed perhaps even a bit excited or ready to embrace a socialist as they hope he will focus on pro-growth economics which is something that is desperately needed in the almost all Conservative Europe which has focused on austerity so much that it has stopped any real means of growth and is in a downwards spiral into the pits.

Altough she might be scary sometimes, I heard one of her interview last night and she was actully right on many economic issues.
For instance the European Union should be about the pepole not about the banks and large corporations- this is what the EU is mostly about today- therefore or things will change or European counties have to resign from the EU.
Me as an Italian citzen I am paying lots of taxes for a crise I didnt create. it is bank's fault. However they didnt applay extra taxes to them.
If the EU persists to be in that way I'd rather be out. Thats not the EU I imagined as a child.

well some social views about homosexuality are scary but not so much the ones about immigration. Immigration is also part of the problem here in Europe and is causing the decrease of social welfare as well as unemployment in some working sectors. I already talked extensvly about this issue in the old forum

Immigration is just a scapegoat issue for more serious social issues affecting a country that no one wants to face.

it depends, because for some pepole it is a serious issue. I wouldnt really defeine a scapegout even tho sometimes it can be. There other bigger issues at stake in economy, I agree, but this is not tottaly irrelevant.
