I wonder what it would be like from Earth's surface...how small would a black hole be if it were only the amount of mass as our sun? The size of the moon, or what? Would it even be visible from the surface?

That depends on where the black hole is in relation to the Earth. I imagine if it were located where the Sun is, the "event horizon" with the mass of our Sun would be very tiny to the viewers on Earth. But, you will immediately see its massive effect on surrounding space-time; you will see background stars being stretched to the point they look like strings of light circling outside the border of the empty void. Any planet or background radiation that passes behind this singularity will not completely disappear but appear in twos or the effect much larger than if the black hole wasn't there. There is still a lot we don't understand about those things.
