Edward Teller, often referred to as the father of the hydrogen bomb was involved in many nuclear projects throughout the cold war. One of them was operation PlumbBob which ran from the 28th of may to the 7th of October 1957

Anyway.. The Pascal B explosion was detonated deep underground at the bottom of a water-filled shaft. The shaft was sealed off by a 900kg metal plug. When the nuke was detonated, it vapourized the water in the shaft and turned it into a half-kilometer long piston.

The exciting part is that the steal cap up top - was shot out into space at Six Times Escape Velocity, or an estimated 66km/s. Suffice to say, it was never found.

Does anyone else think that sounds a little like an asteroid defence system? Assuming you could steer it afterwards.

Shot out to space, you say?

Why isn't it something we have heard before?

All right, brain. You don't like me and I don't like you, but let's just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.

Nothing concrete about this article. I guess we'll never know.

56 km/sec... damn.
They compare it to meteors, but I'm not sure how many of them enter with such high velocities. They also usually don't have exactly vertical approach. Finally this one would have greatest kinetic energy in densest air. Somehow I woulldn't expect it to slow down totally in 2 seconds from fricken 56 km/s. Even after 1 sec it should reach mezosphere where air is not very dense...
So I think it's not a stretch to assume that cap is on it's way to Alpha Centauri ;)

that is, assuming it didn't melt from atmospheric compression and super high heats n pressure.

It's just as well. Imagine if a few thousand years down the line that thing hit and killed an alien or something. It would be a declaration of war. :cheese:

And we wouldn't even know why until they come down and destroy half of the US.
