Do you think Robotic house-pets like dogs and cats will be available within the next two decades? What about horses or bigger animals?
For artificial animals I dont mean like the ones in this photograph. A modern artificial animals for me will look exactly like a natural one, and it will have its artificial intelligence that can be compared to the one of a real animal, moreover the animal will have its exclusive bahaviour. The only difference with real animal will be that you won't need to feed it with real food or take out for its biological needs.
When do you think we will have such a technology? and would these robot-animals have the same rights of real animals?
I was just thinking about it today as I may take a dog with me. Share your opinion please.

So you are talking about robot animals,I think in the future robotics will be so advanced that they will have robotic digestive systems enabling them to eat like their biological counterparts, but this technology is sill on its infancy and I think it will only be available after 2050-2060...

I think also that with genetic engineering and synthetic biology we will create wholly new species that could live with people as well...They would resemble strange creatures of another world or a more natural and commom appearance.By the way, there is a topic of the old forum talking about the creation of Pokemon,I thought that very interesting, imagine having a sycther or a Dragonair in your house :prankster: !!I'm 20 years old but I like Pokemon!

I'd get one, once I had a white chihuahua, wiener dog and a chiwienee. I hated them.

We'll definitely have artificial animals. When is hard to say though. I'm sure the technology for it will be available by around mid-century, but I don't know what priority it will be given since it will be a luxury item for most people. However what might happen is we'll make synthetic animals that are useful for commercial purposes (whatever a scaled-up version of biofuel-producing bacteria would be) and then the tech will filter down for domestic use.

i am fantasizing an artificial critter companion (like the ted from AI, jiminy cricket from pinocchio or those daemons from the magic compass) that'll be a virtual secretary/assistant, shrink, a companion that knows all your hopes and dreams but never share it with anyone, gives good and effective advice and be an all-aroound life coach, accountant, doctor, shopper if you need one, etc. your kids will have one too, it will be his guardian, bodyguard, babysitter when you are not around, a friend that is programmed to mold your child into a healthy and happy little kids in a very safe world, give good advice, correct his mistakes and help him achieve his dreams. i think this can happen in a far future to most people. like those daemons in the golden compass, only that its gonna be an artificial animal with advanced AI/robotic technology.

I've always liked the look of Robot Animals, but not sure when we'll have them so i would agree with Logically with his idea when they will be built.

If you're going to have a robotic companion/counsellor/child carer, why not make it look human? Certainly, child development would benefit more from a humanoid mentor than one which resembles a talking animal from Narnia. Kids whose closest friend looks like a beast may grow up with human relationship issues... they could even start practicing the Farmer Sutra with real livestock.

Robot animals (zooids?) are just as possible as androids, but have no clear use except as workers, or as ultra-expensive pets which don't poo! And perhaps, if extinct species - such as dodos, elephant birds, ground sloths, mammoths etc - are cloned back to life, zooids could be built as surrogate parents for the first generation.

Mean while I will think to get one of these. It would be nice if in the near future they would be able to strech and grow just like normal animals

well, that too. the idea is you can make it look like anything you want. if your kid likes teddy bears, then teddy bears it must be. if he outgrown to liking teddy bears and now would want to have his daemon look like eve from wall-e, or aslan from narnia or gir from invader zim or maybe just a holographic version of the daemon then he could. it can be completely customized.
