[ The full article is sadly behind a paywall ], but as the excerpt shows, Chinese and US scientists have come up with an improved thermoelectric generator. This is a material that uses the so-called Seebeck effect, famous for deriving power from radioactive decay in space probes. They managed to improve the efficiency from 0.8 zT to 1.8 zT by doping the Lead-Telluride compound in common use with Selenium, aka the stuff that Mulder uses to fight evolution with, aka the active ingredient in dandruff shampoo.

True story. Apparently it's now efficient enough to enable commercial uses. Ideas?
