One World Trade Centre is coming along really nicely. I prefer skyscrapers in 'legacy' locations at the minute, like those going up in New York, where they will actually serve a purpose and be used. The idea of an entire ghost series of skyscrapers like currently seems to be happening in Dubai, totally disconnected from the reality of the rest of the country, just doesn't sit well with me... though there are some interesting designs going up over there.

I have to agree, Jon. That said, there's some amazing engineering and design going into those ghost towns.
This amount of awesome cannot be from concentrate.

I myself am in love with the architecture in the Abraj Al-Bait, and now for the usual image spam;

For me, it looks like it doesn't belong on earth, like it fell from the heavens, I am somewhat trying to replicate the architectural style in minecraft..

Reminds me of Stormwind from World of Warcraft.
It's apparent to me that a lot of people seem to want to prove why a technology is not possible, rather than think of ingenious ways to make something possible. It's my conviction that when someone says something is "impossible," what they really mean is "our current level of science cannot explain this, and I don’t have the motivation to explore beyond its boundaries." -Richard Obousy

The tower at London Bridge they're calling the Shard btw. I pass it every now and again and it's looking quite impressive so far, even if it is quite incomplete.

On the Chicago Spire, unless the new landowner decides to use it for the same project, it's probably not happening.

And yeah, agreed with Jon on Dubai, pretty as their designs are over there, it's a bit excessive. Surely there are better applications for those resources?

I love how critics call the world's first mile high building phallic. What skyscraper isn't phallic?

sometimes the cost of building these low function towers is worth it for "transforming" a skyline. for example, without the CN tower, Toronto looks just weird, and non distinct.

I don't think building mega sky scrapers is a waste of resources. it helps us understand engineering better so that int he future we can build better ones for good functions, such as vertical farms and giant internal neighborhoods in individual buildings

anyways they're pretty :S

Ok, that here is just pure awesomness - 1 km(at least) tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Construction starts in 2 months, anticipated to end in 2016(construction 24h/day). That means new world tallest every 6 years since 1998 :]

I think Cheongna City Infinity Tower (450m) would be one of the coolest looking towers ever. Haven't heard much news on it lately, but it's not cancelled apparently. Fingers crossed!
