^ That would make VR even more incredible. You could live a couple of life-times a week!

agreed, I hadn't thought about that before. if that happened I'm sure we would have a number of wise people, way more then now anyway.

Number one for sure would be to fly like Superman,  That has always been my dream.  I'm a Halo fan, so of course I'd want to play through some of the Halo Games as a Spartan.  I also think that the Spirit of Fire from Halo Wars is one of the coolest spaceships of any movie or game ever, so I'd want to create a version of that (w/the AI Serena, because I love how sarcastic she is) and explore the galaxy.  I also love Rivendale from Lord of the Rings, so I'd probably spend a lot of my kick-back time there.  I'm sure I'd have sex with Arwen a few times, and maybe even take some other celebrity crushes and make them into elves and have sex with them too, but I have a feeling sex with a virtual character will turn out to be very empty and meaningless and that it won't be as popular as some people expect.  I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but who could resist being a Jedi knight?  Although actually, being able to shoot lightning out of my fingers seems pretty damn awesome so maybe I'd be a Sith instead and conquer the galaxy.  Of course I'd watch all of the Super Bowls from the sideline, watch some of the best concerts of all time from the front, etc.

But I think more than anything else, I'd travel the world.  I'd visit all of the major destinations in the present time, then begin exploring the world in the past.  I'd go to Disneyland on opening day, visit ancient Rome, Greece, Persia, and China.  Witness the birth of Christ.  Travel back to the age of the dinosaurs and hunt a T-Rex.  Sail on the Titanic.  Watch the liftoff of Apollo 11.

Why is it that the most prevalent theme when talking about VR wishes is sex? Honestly, please enlighten me. It's definitely not among the first ten things that came into my mind when thinking about all the freakin' possibilites of VR. :scratchhead:

"All scientific advancement due to intellegence overcoming, compensating, for limitations. Can't carry a load, so invent wheel. Can't catch food, so invent spear. Limitations. No limitations, no advancement. No advancement, culture stagnates. Works other way too. Advancement before culture is ready. Disastrous."

There's definitely truth in that...

I'd certainly use it for much more than just sex. I think wasting VR on sex is crazy! Think about it, we could be doing literally anything imaginable and not know it's not actually happening. You could recreate countries in VR and go on virtual round-the-world trips, or even experience things such as bungee jumping, skydiving, being a human cannonball, etc. without any dangers whatsoever.

Of course, I'd use it for sex. But then, I'd also use it for a tonne more things. I'd live for a week as a soldier in the siege of Troy. I'd wander across Jurassic landscapes. I'd play a fully immersive version of Gran Turismo. I'd ride the Tour de France. I'd attend the inauguration of Lincoln and a ball in Versailles with Louis XIV. The possibilities are endless.

Or experience the raw, visceral pain of being eaten alive by something massive...

What I'm saying, you'd become helluva lot more wiser if you use this technology both ways. :)

I would think it would be a good idea to set up open source software where people contribute to creating distinct items/procedures which govern the virtual world. For instance, why generate your own oak tree each time you view one, fill the world with procedurally generated oak trees with subroutines made by an enthusiast at the other side of the world.

In such a way, you could "cheat" and achieve semi-realistic VR with much less processing power (on your end). I would envision a future where hobbyists "survey" real world objects and sensations to incorporate them into the open source material. On the other extreme you would have people develop narrow VR which focus on a very small subset of phenomena to simulate how certain events would play out should they ever be needed (eg. an explosion next to a waterfall). Using cloud libraries objects, procedures and unique events could be added to the world as they're needed.

Edit: forget waterfalls, imagine explosion+treaclefall

Well, when the internet really started becoming a big thing, online porn took off as the number one most searched for thing on the internet.  In fact, I remember reading something that in 2011 or 2012 for the first time something had eclipsed porn as the number one thing that people go online for, and it was social media.  If something can be sexualized, it will be.

As for why, I guess it's because VR is about fulfilling your fantasies.  Many people have many different fantasies.  Some like me want to fly.  Others want to be Captain Kirk and explore the galaxy.  Others want to be eaten by a dinosaur. However, everyone has their sexual fantasies.  We don't agree on many of the other ones (I most definitely DO NOT want to be eaten by a dinosaur -- even in VR), but we all agree that we have our sexual fantasies.  So it probably comes up the most because it's one of the few fantasies that just about everyone has.
