CNET demos Windows 8 for those of us that can't be at Microsoft Build.

What do you all think about the new OS? I am looking forward to trying it out, but I think it could go either way.

I'm still running XP at home. It works.

I just got a new laptop at work with Win 7, and so far I'm finding it extremely frustrating. I really miss the way windows in XP "remember" their sizing and placement, as opposed to Win 7 deliberately excluding that feature. And I'm not looking forward to some of my older games no longer working in Win 7.

Given all this, plus the fact that there is no painless upgrade from XP to Win 7, is it worth waiting to upgrade to Win 8?

Hm...I don't know, it would be wise to wait until it actually comes out and you get a chance to test it, in order to answer that question properly.

Windows 7 is pretty good compared to Vista and even to XP. People just complain about windows 7 in the same light as they would complain about windows XP. Just minor annoyances or viruses that they pick up which has nothing to do with the OS itself. There are some annoyances yes, but windows 7 is going to be a long term contender "The Next XP" if you will. Microsoft is replacing all XP stuff with Windows 7 so you'll no longer see Windows XP around in five years. It's all gonna be Windows 7.

I'm just not so sure Windows 8 will be all that great or what it's hyped up to be. Certainly it won't even touch the mobility of iOS. I just think Apple and Microsoft are radically different now, than when they used to be. Apple is getting Mobile and Mobile more and more while Microsoft is just getting its feet dirty. There's bound to be complications in the new version.

Windows 7 is a significant improvement for me personally over XP and Vista even more so, which was a debacle. Until recently I've still had to use Windows XP at work and it really is starting to look and feel its age now, in my opinion. I am certainly somewhat intrigued with the direction Microsoft has chosen to go with Windows 8, but as you have alluded to jj, I can very much see Windows 7 continuing to dominated the desktop market while Windows 8 goes into laptops and tablets, for which it looks significantly better suited. Still, perhaps the tile interface could work for desktops, we'll just have to wait and see.

Windows 7 is amazing. It's fast, stable, and reliable. Microsoft has never done that EVER. Hats off to them on this OS.

Pre dev copy out now, if anybody wanna try it out. I'm downloading now, but will only test on VMware due to limited memory on my machine
