Despite the gravity of the crisis, Asquith's thoughts still flitted to young Venetia Stanley, on whom he was fixated. He had hoped to spend the weekend with her but events had determined otherwise.

'I got no letter from you this morning, which is the saddest blank in my day.'
Asquith, in a letter to Venetia Stanley, August 2

Good to know that the British PM had his prioroties straight!

All you English and Western European readers: If you were born 100 years earlier, you'd be fucking dead, if not now then in the coming months and years.

Especially Russians.
You're reading of the great pivot of world history, ladies and gentlemen!

The fact that I was born in the same century as the two deadliest wars in human history makes me feel unbelievably fortunate.

Because he was born at the end of it, not the start.

EDIT: Unike JRR tolkien. Participating in both world wars.

It's true that that is lucky, but why is it lucky that he was just born during the same century?

Because I was (like most of us here) born that close to the wars but at a point in the century at which they were no danger to me.

I expect a world war three

This. Nato and Russia are both militarising and still have imperialistic tendencies: sound familiar? And I fear that if this comes to pass, especially in a few decades, China and Russia will crush NATO like a tin can.

Now we just need to find the lynchpin and stop it.... not an easy task.

“If the genius of invention were to reveal to-morrow the secret of immortality, of eternal beauty and youth, for which all humanity is aching, the same inexorable agents which prevent a mass from changing suddenly its velocity would likewise resist the force of the new knowledge until time gradually modifies human thought.”

Santa's also going to be visited by Canadian and russian military forces in the north pole. Global warming is creating new access to undiscovered resources.
