The Svalbard Global Seed Vault (SGSV) was opened on 26th February, 2008. This secure facility is located on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen in the remote Arctic Svalbard archipelago, 810 miles (1,300 km) from the North Pole. Intended to preserve a wide variety of plant seeds and their genetic codes, it is designed to survive all man-made and natural disasters – from nuclear war, to climate change, or even asteroid impacts.
