Re: Has AGI Quietly Arrived?
In my opinion, once the Coffee Test has been passed, AGI will have finally arrived. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_general_intelligence A machine is required to enter an average American home and figure out how to make coffee: find the coffee machine, find the coffee, add water, find a mug...

Re: ‘Supercontinent’ could make Earth uninhabitable in 250m years
If we continue to technologically evolve without going extinct as a whole group, what we will be doing in 250 million years, I wonder? Imagine AI accelerating our progress by a million times in few centuries. Now what about 250 million years? Boggles the mind. We'll probably have already long ago s...

250,000,000 AD – Earth is facing a mass extinction https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/25/science/future-earth-warming-mammal-extinction.html If Pangea Ultima behaves like previous supercontinents, it will become studded with volcanoes that belch carbon dioxide, the model found. Thanks to the turbulent...

Re: New predictions for the timeline
Copper is superior to broadband and sharing infrastructure with the internet for home phones. It works when the power is out and it doesn't get overburdened and stop working during a disaster when there isn't enough data throughput on broadband networks. I'm sad to see it go, I wish we'd keep it ar...

Re: New predictions for the timeline
Yeah, no. We don't need to cover that much of the earth in computronium to support a God-like super intelligence - seems like we're getting a glimpse of what's needed for that now, and it's far less than that. In a decade or so we'll have AGI probably with not much more waste heat than we're produc...

Re: New predictions for the timeline
Again, I feel like waste heat isn't a problem unless we produce far more waste heat than we do today, and I'd need to see some good reasoning on why it would greatly surpass today's peaks. https://www.futuretimeline.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2976 So imagine a world that is, for example, cov...

Re: What are your top 5 advances you wish to see?
1: Eternal youth/immortality 2: Cures (not just treatments) to all diseases: Alzheimer's disease, cancer, ALS, prion diseases, cardiovascular diseases, etc. 3: Regenerative medicine to perfectly fix all injuries: regrow limbs, organs, etc. 4: FTL drives. Though 20c is way too slow to effectively exp...

Re: New predictions for the timeline
You really believe our technology will still be so inefficient millions of years from now that waste heat will be a problem? That we won't be using whatever bit of heat we produce to power something else that the actual amount of energy wasted is negligible? We're talking so far in the future that ...
