I recently read a meme posted by a Facebook friend who is a libertarian. The meme asked why Democrats were blaming Trump for not solving problems when he has "only" been in office for 3 years. I explained to him that it was because people like Trump have been blocking solutions for more that 3 years. Burdensome regulations? Libertarian arguments + denialism = free dumb.

Which of these global threats are you more worried about? Asteroid impacts, or a supervolcano eruption.

Humanity already survived a super volcano eruption, so if one erupted again, we would probably survive. Also, eruptions from super volcanoes aren't always super eruptions. If big enough asteroid impacted Earth, humanity would go extinct.

VR in the next 40-50 years will be utterly amazing. Imagine being able to visit an entire recreation of planet Earth, at any time in history from the Hadean era onwards, and seeing life as it once was, procedurally generated.

    Only tangentially related, but:
speaking of moderation, Reddit is looking to use GPT-3: https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/11/21287966/openai-commercial-product-text-generation-gpt-3-api-customers "Social media platform Reddit is also exploring how the GPT-3 API might be used to help it automate content moderation." It's worth imagining how that might be used in the future to remove undesirable posts, and even troll comments.

I agree that many people who have statues dedicated to them were awful human beings, but if we start down this road of demolishing statues of people who don't live up to our 21st century moral standards, where does it lead to? Do we just demolish every statue of important people in Western civilization history in order to get our spotless utopia? I'm all the for the BLM protests, but I think going after statues of Churchill and such is over the top. Was he racist? Maybe. Did he help s...

Studies show that most people who survive a depression did so with their own power. I guess it takes a certain attitude and self-awareness to be able to pull this off. By the way, depression carries on for life but we just get better at dealing with it.

This website has actually saved my life, especially during my worst depression. Thinking about the future helps to better put things into perspective. I can think bigger, rather than on myself, and realize a better more advanced life. Even if just in theory.

It can be very hard, especially now with all the current issues. We need much better mental health services and empathy for those who have trouble coping.

The Terminator franchise is cool, but my interest in futurology has sort of destroyed its whole premise and credibility. In reality, a robot takeover would totally decimate humanity. The machines would move with lightning speed, supernatural precision, and be essentially undefeatable.

If the machines appear to kill people at random, it's because the machines predicted with supernatural accuracy those people will become threats in the far future.

Reading hard sci-fi did that to me too. It's harder to appreciate certain films now, but what can't be appreciated in realism can be in aesthetics. Terminator has some iconic aesthetics.

She'd be a low-mid ranking Dem in America, constantly hounded by Fox News for being a Satanic Commie.

She & her country are quite lovely. I also think having a "sane" country & leadership, may mean you can't simultaneously be a superpower. The priorities will always be different.

It's admirable that their lowest restriction level includes shutting down borders to foreigner. Of course, if you want to stop the spread of a virus that's the first thing you should do. Too bad many other leaders hesitated to do that, and allowed the virus to be imported. Good to know there's some sanity in government out there.

That's a proper shame, though I understand why. Shanghai Tower still isn't at optimum occupancy. A ban is silly though. If a locality or company thinks they can put to use a 500m+ tower they should be allowed to try, though perhaps without central government subsidy.

This is true throughout the world and not just the US. In the UK, there was a case like this where a man died (Ian Tomlinson) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Ian_Tomlinson which led to a change in approach by the police during protests https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2009/nov/25/ian-tomlinson-death-changed-policing

A dose of moral nihilism would also help. Cops think that what they are doing is *right*; that these people are breaking the law, and therefore morally in the *wrong*. But what if there really is no airtight moral foundation to the laws? That would add a little doubt into their calculations, and make them not feel so forceful in their righteousness.

As to your inquiry, to put it simply, Party Chairs are just the "heads" of the 2 parties which vary by our states. Each state has a Dem/GOP party which operates at the local level, overseeing state legislatures. You may be more aware of their activities during our elections in which they organize caucuses/primaries. <...
