Perhaps we'll simply live underground to survive the climate crisis. https://www.futuretimeline.net/blog/images/1725-samsung-future-predictions-2069.jpg

On temperature see "The Third Degree" a report commissioned by the Australian government points out that UN models are not accounting for cumulative climate events in their outlined global scenarios.

The report claims (and I believe it) that the middle of the road scenario is 3C of warming by 2050 and that a low probability high impact scenario of temperatures exceeding 3.5-4C of warming is possible by 2050. If humans are still emitting at 3-4C of warming in 2050 (very likely) than a hothouse Earth scenario is realized.

Feedback loops will take over and the warming will not stop until it reaches the 6-10C region. It's also important to realize that human civilization is global. If Canada and Russia are safe havens they will collapse under the weight of everyone else's fall.

I've had the most amazing week in Yorkshire (north-east England). On holiday with my family. Got some fossils including a rare Spinosaurus tooth. Heading back to London now.

RIP full spinosaurus skeleton. Still butthurt about that fire a while back.

That's super cool though Will. Didn't know you could find spino fossils in England!

I would say I am indifferent to being British. I lost my sense of nationalist pride and shame a while ago. Britain is just a place I happened to be born in, like any other. This may sound a bit hippyish, but I feel much more collectivist with respect to the human race and life itself.

Outlook hit the nail on the head there with me as a leftist at least. Identity is easily manipulated in general from observation I agree. Not being sarcastic, genuinely asking. What would be better friend?

Also @wjfox I think you're feeling brexit grief. I relate hardcore as the climate grief has been keeping me up at the night the past few weeks.

    Edit: grammar

That's interesting, I feel like things are really looking up at the moment. I mean we have still have a LOT of people who think 17.4million is more than half of 66million which is pretty shameful for a nation that once led the world in science and technology but for a change it is looking like most people in parliament can do maths at the moment!

I'm optimistic on technological change and cautiously optimistic on social change. Climate crisis will necessitate both because capitalism is incompatible with environmentalism and we are past the point where we can solve the crisis without geoengineering.

I'm 100% socialy optimistic, but only in the LONG TERM. In the short and middle term, hovewer, there may be many "fluctuations" that will not change the general course of history, but will be disastrous to contemporaries affected by them.

If brexit happens anyways in the long term I think it's a good thing. The issue for me is the way it's being done. In order to safely leave any trade pact a country has to spend years building up it's national industry first not just crash out of the market like this. It's dumb and harmful to people who just want better lives. They should have held a referendum with the caveat that the UK leave in 10 years after a massive domestic economic stimulus plan.

It was also an undemocratic referendum lead by an undemocratic government influenced by an undemocratic media which is bad all around.

I agree that a intelligently-done, long-term, slow Brexit transition would not necessarily be bad in the long-term. This is the precise opposite. The worst thing is if we have 3 years of uncertainty (already causing massive economic damage) for it all to become a no-deal. So fucking dumb.
