“The cause has not been determined yet. There is a possibility of external interference through a rocket or bomb or other act,” President Michel Aoun said in comments carried by local media and confirmed by his office.

All the talk about "finding and punishing those responsible" from the government itself is also pretty blind. How could anyone care about the self-serving video with governor of the city crying as well. I'd be infuriated if I was Lebanese rn.

While unrelated, this is exactly why no one should ever want a modern war to happen. It would look exactly like that, but worse and worldwide.

Felt like I was watching that Trinity nuke movie, even the clouds were effected by shockwaves.

I've always wondered why rover designs don't use quadrupedal or tripedal designs instead of wheeled. There are probably a lot of reasons, but it feels more natural locomotion would suit off terrain exploration better.

Brain autopsy videos freak me out. I can't not look at them and feel some sort of metaphysical dread especially when the professor mentions something about the donater's life or cause of death. Very lovecraftian.

What's hilarious too is the level of sophistication needed to hack twitter at this scale contrasted with the imageboard tier meme scam. If they didn't have money to begin with this wouldn't work of course, but if they did placing a massive short and frontrunning the market on some coordinated fake news could have netted them millions.

I think the majority of accusations of racism are tools for character assassination and divide and conquer. It’s a foundational marketing technique to cement brand loyalty in one side. Apple and Google, democrats and republican. As long as it’s a useful tool for campaigning, using pejoratives like “racist” against anyone who makes themselves an easy target will still be vogue. It’s too useful a tool to relinquish for other pragmatic reasons. If you remember, closing the border to flights from...

China at the genesis of the covid crisis was labeled a racist move. In the lower house in particular, reps are pretty thirsty for whatever recognition and branding they can get their hands on. They and media outlets that need to strike angry chords in viewers to keep them motivated to pay attention and away from competing outlets.

Echo chambers are good for business and good for voter loyalty, and with today’s hyper efficient information systems, the only way to keep a person in an echo chamber is to make them want to stay there, and that requires demonising the other side. So claims racism is a valuable tool that won’t be squandered. Especially not as election years roll around.

Corruption is such a major talking point in politics, but it's such a convoluted thing to define in political sciences that it's a subdiscipline of its own. I'm starting to believe politics is just one huge case of idiots talking about things they don't understand, and as such is a major diversion from the public to actually take the time to read theory and science.

One day I believe this too will shift once we are collectively intelligent enough to recognize how inefficient it is. Rich people are not truly rich and constantly metaphorically shoot themselves by hoarding capital. By depriving billions for their immediate individual benefit they lose the potential contributions of those billions who are held back by a pure struggle for survival. Among those billions are many who would cure cancer, aging, countless disease and improve the world for everyone...

Even in the microcosm of the dog-leash example you provided this social corruption breeds resentment and encourages bad behavior in others in turn making society more nasty for the person who thought they were benefiting themselves by gaming the system.

In short, people who participate in corruption are short-sighted morons even by philosophical theories that would pin humans as self-interested in nature because cooperation overall is be...
