Life in Newfoundland before and after the collapse of the cod stocks

https://youtu.be/6Dr4AQePeRM

Newfoundland cod fishery: Lessons not learned?

https://youtu.be/0sFmT8IXGhw

Some background: https://en.wikipedia...est_cod_fishery

In the summer of 1993, when the Northern Cod biomass fell to 1% of earlier levels,[3] the Canadian Federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, John Crosbie, declared a moratorium on the Northern Cod fishery, which for the preceding 500 years had largely shaped the lives and communities of Canada's eastern coast.[4] A major factor that contributed to the depletion of the cod stocks off the shores of Newfoundland was the introduction of equipment and technology that increased the volume of landed fish.[5] From the 1950s onwards, new technology allowed fishermen to trawl a larger area, fish deeper, and for a longer time. By the 1960s, powerful trawlers equipped with radar, electronic navigation systems, and sonar allowed crews to pursue fish with unparalleled success, and Canadian catches peaked in the late-1970s and early-1980s.[6] Cod stocks were depleted at a faster rate than could be replenished.[7]

...

Approximately 37,000 fishermen and fish plant workers lost their jobs due to the collapse of the cod fisheries; many people had to find new jobs or further their education to be able to find jobs. It was devastating for many communities and impacted Newfoundland profoundly.

Great Depression Cooking

https://youtu.be/9zXqkHvs0po

An old woman in her 90s used to post cooking videos on youtube in 2009, that is 10 years ago. She's since died, but her videos haven't since they've recently blown up in popularity. The cooking show is about the great depression, but more interesting than the food are the stories and personality of the host about the times back then.

So, what you won't gain in cooking knowledge, you'll gain in wisdom and just perspective. The videos are so pure.

Reporter Left Terrified by Virtual Reality Simulator! | Good Morning Britain

It's been six years since we started getting VR reaction videos en masse, and I swear, they NEVER get old. Watching people scream in terror and joy at our virtual future hits at some primal satisfaction in my brain.

I think it's just how visceral it is. Even headsets from years ago playing the most basic of tech demo minigames can cause people to freak out in a way you don't get with any other form of media, which sells you on the idea of VR as a major leap forward. It's too bad these compilations & dedicated videos have largely stopped being made.

Or to put it another way: videos like this are a better advertisement for VR than any actual ad.

When VR headsets finally start getting spots in ads, they ought to be these sorts of clips, not buzzwords about "Open a new world" or "Experience the next step in entertainment" or "Welcome to the next level." No, just give me 30 seconds of people screaming and falling over on themselves while wearing them. Sold.

And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

I feel like a complete nerd for sharing this, but the US Chemical Safety and Hazards Board have some of the best educational videos I've ever found. I've never thought about becoming a chemical engineer until I started watching their videos, which was a while ago when I wanted to see how Deepwater Horizon busted.

Just look at the animation quality too. It feels like an exposition scene from star trek.

Very interesting and informative – and I agree, superb animation quality. I've now subscribed.

You guys remember seeing this image with the story about plastic surgery and the ugly kids and husband suing her for it?
2012-05-07_115944.jpg

Turns out it's fake and it ruined the woman's life. Cultural misogyny doesn't exist.

This guys has a series of videos exploring dead malls in the US. The aesthetics are top notch, but not as top notch as the air of existential dread. It's the death of the 90s.

A documentary, pretty good for its kind.

Uncontacted Tribes

https://youtu.be/4_k5HuDTk3Q

Really brings a new light on the idea of isolationism. Meirelles hit the nail on the head in the end. That kind of wisdom is something hard to find, the idea that things will just occur whether people care for it or not. Uncontacted tribes will force contact, and will try to become uncontacted whether on their own will, or under pressure by settlers and farmers. In the end, the last isolated pockets of humanity are being absorbed into cultural globalization, there's nothing that can change it.

It also really drives home the idea that we're going somewhere that we'll never come back from. Nothing will be the same ever. Uncontrollable change. And that's scary in some way.
