As Homeland Security Secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen oversaw the implementation of the Trump Admin’s increasingly toxic anti-immigrant policies. That she is reportedly resigning because she is not extreme enough for the White House’s liking is deeply alarming. https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/4719/

Trump is removing US Secret Service director

Source: CNN

United States Secret Service director Randolph "Tex" Alles is being removed from his position, multiple administration officials tell CNN.

President Donald Trump instructed his acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, to fire Alles. Alles remains in his position as of now but has been asked to leave.

The Secret Service director reports directly to the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kirstjen Nielsen, who resigned on Sunday amid growing pressure from the President. The director oversees the Secret Service's work on both protection and investigations.

"There is a near-systematic purge happening at the nation's second-largest national security agency," one senior administration official says.

Stephen Miller wants Trump to oust more senior leaders at Homeland Security

Source: CNN

Updated 2:33 PM ET, Mon April 8, 2019

Washington (CNN)White House senior adviser Stephen Miller wants to make sure that outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is only the first of a string of senior officials headed out the door, as he is given more authority over immigration policy.

The President has also pushed in recent weeks to reinstate the family separation policy, which Nielsen resisted, a source familiar with the discussions says. Trump rescinded that policy amid public outrage and scrutiny from the courts last summer.

Miller's heightened influence within the West Wing has been aided by the President, who recently told aides in an Oval Office meeting that Miller was in charge of all immigration and border related issues in the White House, according to a person familiar with the meeting.

Trump administration officials say that Miller, who played key a role in Nielsen's ouster, wants the President to dismiss the director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, Lee Cissna, and the department's general counsel, John Mitnick. United States Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex" Alles, is also being removed from his position, multiple administration officials tell CNN.

"There is a near-systematic purge happening at the nation's second-largest national security agency," this official says.....................................

US budget deficit running 15% higher than a year ago

US budget deficit running 15% higher than a year ago
By JOSH BOAK

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The federal government reported a $146.9 billion deficit in March, causing annual debt to rise 15% for the first half of the budget year compared to the same period in 2018.

The Treasury Department said Wednesday in its monthly report that the fiscal year deficit has so far totaled $691 billion, up from nearly $600 billion in 2018. The Treasury Department expects that the deficit will exceed $1 trillion when the fiscal year ends in September.

Tax receipts are running slightly higher than a year ago as more Americans are working and paying taxes. But the tax cuts signed into law by President Donald Trump in 2017 have meant that the $10 billion increase in receipts has failed to keep pace with a roughly $100 billion increase in government expenditures.

The Congressional Budget Office was slightly more optimistic about the deficit in its January outlook, estimating that it would stay just below $1 trillion until 2022 when it would consistently stay above that total.

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefit has hit a new 49-year low.

Just 196,000 new initial claims applications were made last week, the lowest level since October 1969.

Senate confirms former oil and gas lobbyist David Bernhardt as interior secretary

Source: Washington Post

By Darryl Fears April 11 at 3:15 PM

Former oil and gas lobbyist David Bernhardt was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday to lead the Interior Department, an agency that controls nearly half a billion acres of public land and the vast amount of oil and gas mineral resources resting beneath it.

The 56-to-41 vote Thursday promoted Bernhardt from Interior’s acting secretary, a job he assumed after his predecessor, Ryan Zinke, resigned amid numerous investigations into his behavior and management of the agency. Bernhardt had served as Zinke’s deputy until his departure in December.

The vote tally made Bernhardt the Interior Department’s least popular nominee for secretary in 40 years, according to the Center for American Progress, a liberal-leaning policy institute. Before Thursday, Zinke had the most votes in opposition, 38. Before President Trump’s two picks, every nominee over that time received fewer than 25 no votes, the group said.

Bernhardt’s extensive experience at Interior, where he served as solicitor during the George W. Bush administration, was cited by his supporters who said he is more than qualified to lead the agency.

Missed this the first time, are you arguing in support of anti abortion death penalty here? (Its ambiguously worded, but in context with the post you're replying to it seems like you are.)

You're not seriously trying to use "killing human life is wrong" to justify the death penalty

Are you just trolling now? Do you have nothing better to do? I don't really understand the internet troll mentality I guess, but surely there's something more productive or enjoyable you could be doing?

U.S. to impose sanctions on allies in drive to push Iran oil sales to zero
Source: Washington Post

The Trump administration said Monday it will start imposing sanctions on some key U.S. allies unless they stop buying all oil from Iran after waivers expire next month.

“If you don’t abide by this, there will be sanctions,” said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in announcing an end to waivers granted last year to eight countries and jurisdictions that rely heavily on Iranian oil. “This is what we’re laying out this morning. We have a requirement. To conduct these transactions, one almost always needs to participate in financial markets. We intend the enforce the sanctions.”

The waiver decision came after oil prices have already risen by a third this year, and threatens to take more than a million barrels a day off the market. In anticipation of the move, crude oil prices rose 3 percent overnight. “This decision is intended to bring Iran’s oil exports to zero, denying the regime its principal source of revenue,” said a statement from the White House. It said the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates would ensure global demand is met. Pompeo said Iran had been taking in $50 billion a year in oil revenue before the sanctions were reimposed. He estimated U.S. sanctions have cost the Islamic Republic $10 billion so far.

"The regime would have used that money to support terror groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, and continue with its missile development in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolution 2231," he told reporters. "And it would have perpetuated a humanitarian crisis in Yemen."
