AllenAI talk on "Sounding Board", the winning socialbot in the Amazon Alexa competition from 2017:

https://youtu.be/wCUVnAfyqGE

As you can see, it's pretty complicated, with multiple strategies, multi-layered rewards, many different modules, large data-sources, complicated dialog management, and so on.  BCIs could improve this in so many ways -- but I think just layering-on more of what they've already done will take it very far.

IBM Debater is an existence proof that the response synthesis (cobbled together from multiple sources) can be pushed rather far.  Put something like that in one of these socialbots, and it would be a qualitative leap beyond what Sounding Board can do.

This year's teams have more resources and "lessons learned" to build on, to take things much further.  I don't think one of them will win the million dollar grand prize this year, but it wouldn't surprise me if some team did.

In late May 2018 they were winning the competition. Semi-finals are this week. Maybe they will win this year.

The comments. LOL

"I can't wait to be killed by these things"

I was reading down the comments, like "haha this is pretty funny" but they went on for so long, and every time anyone said "there are much more efficient ways to kill people than creating humanoid robots to do it" they got a bunch of people arguing or demanding "proof" (what?) so I'm pretty sure a lot of those people genuinely think that these sort of robots will be used to hunt people.

The moral of the story is, never read more than 5 youtube comments on a youtube video, unless its about something technically complex enough that there will be no 12 year olds watching it.

“One, remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Two, never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it. Three, if you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don't throw it away.”
