Trump Calls French President Macron's Idea for a European Army 'Very Insulting'
Source: U.S. News & World Report/Reuters

Nov. 9, 2018, at 4:27 p.m.

WASHINGTON (REUTERS) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday it was "very insulting" for French President Emmanuel Macro to suggest Europe should create its own army to protect itself from potential enemies, including the United States.

"Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of NATO, which the U.S. subsidizes greatly," Trump said on Twitter as he arrived in France to meet with Macron.

On Tuesday, Macron said Europe needed a real army to reduce reliance on the United States for defense. "We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the United States of America," Macron said on French radio, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Merkel calls for creation of 'real, true European army'
Source: The Hill

BY TAL AXELROD - 11/13/18 11:39 AM EST 143

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday called for the creation of a “real, true European army” at a meeting of the European Parliament.

“We have to create a European intervention force so that we can tackle issues immediately on the ground," she said. "We have already achieved cooperation in the military sphere, that is good, and we are going to continue to support this. But what we should do, and this is really important if we look at the developments over the past years, we have to work on a vision of one day creating a real, true European army."

Merkel's remarks come just days after similar comments from French President Emmanuel Macron, who said a European military force is needed to deter potential threats from Russia, China and the U.S., noting that the continent needs “to defend itself better alone.”

“We must have a Europe that can defend itself on its own without relying only on the United States,” Macron said during a radio broadcast last week.

Funny, if AfD and Front Nationale made the call for a "true European army" I have a feeling Trump and especially his acolytes would be singing a different tune. Probably one that starts with: "♪♫♪Die Fahne hoch! Die Reihen fest geschlossen!♪♫♪"

And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

I can't help but feel that the fact that Germany and France could create a European empire through pure diplomacy and economic prowess instead of war is an incredibly great irony.

So far as I'm aware Trump's complaint comes from Macron fingering the US as one of the enemies the army would defend against.

Luxembourg To Become First Country To Make All Public Transport Free
Source: The Guardian

Luxembourg is set to become the first country in the world to make all its public transport free. Fares on trains, trams and buses will be lifted next summer under the plans of the re-elected coalition government led by Xavier Bettel, who was sworn in for a second term as prime minister on Wednesday.

Bettel, whose Democratic party will form a government with the leftwing Socialist Workers’ party and the Greens, had vowed to prioritise the environment during the recent election campaign. On top of the transport pledge, the new government is also considering legalising cannabis, and introducing two new public holidays.

Luxembourg City, the capital of the small Grand Duchy, suffers from some of the worst traffic congestion in the world. It is home to about 110,000 people, but a further 400,000 commute into the city to work. A study suggested that drivers in the capital spent an average of 33 hours in traffic jams in 2016.

While the country as a whole has 600,000 inhabitants, nearly 200,000 people living in France, Belgium and Germany cross the border every day to work in Luxembourg. - More...

Clashes as yellow vest protests grow in Belgium, Netherlands

By LORNE COOK and MIKE CORDER

December 9, 2018

Quote:

BRUSSELS (AP) — Belgian police fired tear gas and water cannons at yellow-vested protesters calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Charles Michel after they tried to breach a riot barricade, as the movement that started in France made its mark Saturday in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Protesters in Brussels threw paving stones, road signs, fireworks, flares and other objects at police blocking their entry to an area where Michel’s offices, other government buildings and the parliament are located.

Brussels police spokeswoman Ilse Van de Keere said that around 400 protesters were gathered in the area.

About 100 were detained, many for carrying dangerous objects like fireworks or clothing that could be used as protection in clashes with police.

The reasons for the protests are not entirely clear. Neither Belgium nor the Netherlands has proposed a hike in fuel tax — the catalyst for the massive and destructive demonstrations in France in recent weeks...

EU Court Overturns Relaxed Vehicle-Emission Standards

https://www.courthou...sion-standards/

Introduction:

(Courthouse News) – In a ruling that allows cities across the EU to ban so-called “cleaner” diesel vehicles, the European General Court rebuked commission lawmakers Thursday for relaxing emission standards.

The governments of Paris, Brussels and Madrid brought the underlying challenge after the European Commission made a change in 2016 that more than doubled the limit for nitrogen oxide that is emitted during RDE, or real driving emission, tests.

Conclusion:

“Ever since Europe’s car industry told Europe’s governments their big lie, that they could make clean diesel engines, an array of mechanisms has been launched to cover up the inconvenient truth,” said Areeba Hamid, clean air campaigner for Greenpeace UK, as quoted today by the Guardian.

“The diesel deception has moved from Volkswagen’s infamous cheat device and its equivalents from other manufacturers, to the contorted ‘standards’ with loopholes big enough to drive an SUV through,” Hamid added.

“Truth is, diesel is a dirty fuel, the car industry can’t be trusted, and no amount of smoke and mirrors is going to persuade anyone otherwise.”

Google Strikes Early in EU Battle Over News Snippets

https://www.courthou...-news-snippets/

Introduction:

(Courthouse News) – An EU high court adviser said Thursday that a German law subjecting Google and other search engines to demands for licensing fees for publishing excerpts from news articles needs to be cleared by European regulators.

European Court of Justice Advocate General Gerard Hogan’s non-binding opinion says the Luxembourg-based court should halt Germany’s policy because it should have been taken up with the European Commission as it is a technical regulation.

Google has been accused by publishers of unfairly profiting on their content by making pieces of it free via Google News and YouTube. The search engine giant countered that the publishers are making money from ad revenue on its sites.

Germany enacted a copyright law in 2013 that said internet search engine operators cannot provide excerpts of text, photo and video content created by press publishers without permission.

VG Media, a collective of about 200 German publishers, sued Google in Berlin regional court for publishing excerpts from its press and media content without paying a license fee.

EU Border Agency Says Migrant Border Crossings at 5-Year Low

https://www.courthou...-at-5-year-low/

Entire Article:

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union’s border agency says the number of unauthorized border crossings into Europe has hit a five-year low, but that migrant entries into Spain via the Mediterranean continue to climb.

Frontex said Friday that migrants tried to cross the EU’s external borders without authorization around 150,000 times last year, a 25-percent drop compared to 2017.

It says the drop is due to a massive decrease in the number of people entering Italy, mostly after setting out from Libya and Algeria. Just over 23,000 unauthorized crossings were noted on that route in 2018.

Frontex says about 57,000 crossings were detected in Spain, double the figure for 2017.

EU nations have been bickering over how to manage migrant arrivals since well over 1 million people entered in 2015.

Trump administration downgrades EU's status in US, without informing Brussels
Source: The Guardian

Downgrade of diplomatic role seen as a snub reflecting a general antipathy to the EU in the Trump administration

The Trump administration has downgraded the diplomatic status of the EU mission in Washington, without informing the mission or Brussels, officials confirmed on Tuesday

The downgrade from nation state to international organisation status reverses an Obama administration decision in 2016 to grant the EU an enhanced diplomatic role in Washington, and is being seen in Brussels as a snub reflecting a general antipathy to the EU in the Trump administration. The president has supported Brexit and has described the EU as a “foe”.

The change, first reported by the German broadcaster, Deutsche Welle, potentially means that the EU mission would have less clout and access to US officials.

“We understand that there was a recent change in the way the diplomatic precedence list is implemented by the United States’ protocol,” Maja Kocijančič, spokeswoman for EU foreign affairs and security policy, said. She added: “We were not notified of any change.”

Republic of Macedonia Approves Name Change In Step Toward Joining EU
Source: Bloomberg

The Republic of Macedonia cleared its biggest hurdle to joining NATO and the European Union by passing an amendment to change its name and solve a decades-long dispute with Greece.

The parliamentary vote shifts the advantage to the West in its struggle for influence with Cold War foe Russia over the Balkans, Europe’s most volatile region. It also fulfills an agreement struck last year in which Greece pledged to lift its vetoes on the Balkan state’s bids to join the world’s largest trading bloc and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Prime Minister Zoran Zaev won a two-thirds majority in the chamber Friday to rename the ex-Yugoslav country to "The Republic of North Macedonia," parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi said in Skopje. Now the baton passes to Athens, where Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is facing resistance from nationalist opponents to his pledge to ratify the deal and sign off on Macedonia’s NATO accession.

“This is a big deal, even more significant at a time when there’s uncertainty in democracies in the West, in the future of Europe and in the role of the U.S.,” Damon Wilson, executive vice president at the Atlantic Council in Washington, said by phone. “Tsipras has already taken the tough decisions in the political barbs by doing the agreement in the first place, so he’s got every incentive to follow through.”

In Major Step, Europe Sets Up an EU Prosecutor’s Office

https://www.courthou...ecutors-office/

Introduction:

(Courthouse News)  — In a major, first-of-its-kind move, the European Union is setting up a European-wide prosecutor’s office that will have power to investigate and charge people for financial crimes committed against the EU.

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office is expected to come into force next year or early in 2021. Akin to federal prosecutors in the United States, the new agency will consist of a central office in Luxembourg and satellite prosecutors’ offices in individual EU countries.

Since the EU’s birth, the economic and political union has not had an EU-level agency invested with prosecutorial powers. Today, if someone commits fraud against the EU they are taken to court by national prosecutors, but experts say that system has proven ineffective.

Aw man, they're going to make a "United states of Europe" (or equivalent thing with different name) without us now.

We're going to be the USE's Mexico! They'll steal all our most talented people and set up horrible destructive industries in our crappy tax haven with no workers rights.

I'm not sure how they'll destroy our country with drug wars? They'll find a way though!

Europe's coming anti-liberal empire?

https://theweek.com/...iliberal-empire

Introduction:

(The Week ) For those who support the European Union, the good news of recent months has been that Brexit is unfolding so disastrously in the U.K. that the temptation of some to bolt from the bloc has faded across the continent. But the bad news is that those who despise the bureaucrats in Brussels may have found a new strategy to advance their aims — and one that has a much greater chance of succeeding.

Instead of fighting the EU, the anti-liberals now hope to capture it.

The first big push to make that happen will take place from May 23 to May 26, when elections for the European Parliament will be held across 28 member countries. The idea is simple: Parties that oppose the neoliberal policies of the EU aim to forge a right-wing popular front — and perhaps even a truly big-tent anti-liberal movement that includes both right- and left-wing populist parties — that can win a large block (and maybe even a plurality) of seats in the legislative body.

The rudiments of such transpartisan anti-liberal coalitions already exist, with some of them holding political power. Italy is governed by a coalition of a far-right anti-immigrant party (La Lega) and an upstart anti-liberal-populist party (Five Star). In Hungary, Viktor Orbán's explicitly anti-liberal Fidesz holds a solid majority, but the country's second most popular party (Jobbik) is even further right. Austria's chancellor is a member of the conservative People's Party, but its vice-chancellor is a member of the far-right Freedom Party.

Those countries and some others (Poland, the Czech Republic) are already poised to send large anti-liberal delegations to the European Parliament. But what if the anti-liberal right begins to make common cause with the anti-liberal left against the neoliberal governing class of the EU?

On the plus side if Europe collapses horribly in the next decade or two we will feel less silly about brexit.

How much less silly will depend on how badly brexit goes, and how hard the EU collapse is, and most importantly, how big a part brexit appears to play in the EU collapse.

EU scrambles to stop Russian interference ahead of May elections

Russian hackers have sharply stepped up a campaign to disrupt EU elections in May, leaving EU officials and tech companies scrambling to muster a response.

Three senior diplomats said the bloc expected Russia-based organisations to attempt to try to influence the vote in 27 member states for new members of the European Parliament by hacking into institutions and spreading fake news.

“We know that they are already attempting to make mischief and, in turn, we are preparing for it,” said one diplomat on condition of anonymity.

US security officials are also concerned that Russian groups could use the vote as a testing ground for potential strategies that could be deployed in next year’s US elections, they added.
