Our space infrastructure(from gps to so much more) is too important for nearly every element of our society not to be protected and we as a nation face the very real prospects of other threats from space like asteroids that could wipe out cities, states and even our nation. These bastards say they're pro-science? If you don't understand these realities you're not.

To act like some stupid space treaty promoting pie in the sky bullshit of forever peace outside the bounds of this planet is pure idiocy and doesn't work in reality. It doesn't work and other nations like russia and china could very well attack our infrastructure and one day we may face that killer asteroid, but hopefully with this new branch of our military we can help defend our planet. Sorry, but if we spot that asteroids I want every element of our military to fucking protect and defend this country with everything we have.

If the democratic party continues to attack science and defense of our nation, well they probably shouldn't be surprised when they don't win back the house in November.

Militarizing space with orbital weaponry is literally humanity aiming a shotgun backwards at their head.

That being said, I want to be in the nation that first does blitzkrieg with it.

I agree! But we must build a nuclear-armed space battleship powered by Orion Drives.

Needless to say, the very first one should be called the USS Donald J. Trump.

The other battleships of the class would be:

  • USS Elon
  • USS Eagle
  • USS Armstrong
  • USS Aldrin

Sounds like a good idea Jakob. That is the only way humanity is getting off this planet in mass.

Next we must withdraw from the space treaty and allow ownership of planets, moons and asteroids.

More money for the already bloated military-industrial complex.

Certainly, once our space assets get numerous enough and advanced enough, it will make sense to create a standalone Space Force. However, I'm not sure if we're at that point yet.

It should spend what it already gets on this.

Not more money. It shouldn't get more...Just relocation towards building space ships and space bases!

Militerizing space breaks international treaty and is unethical. Space is the common manifest destiny of all mankind, not a place to play who has the biggest space lazer...

Its like AI, maybe a space force gets humanity into space, ushers in a glorious new golden age of expansion and post scarcity, but it will definitely destroy the human race if we cant figure out to make people behave responsibly with it.

Except with space we have the slower less likely to be destructive route of peaceful cooperative expansion into space, which currently all nations are following. It doesn't look like we will be able to do anything like that with AGI.

This thread gave me a good premise for a post-apocalyptic sci-fi story. Humans make AI controlled orbital weaponry, AI takes over orbital space, AI turns against humans, humans civilization is destroyed. What ends up happening is that the surviving humans spend their existence hiding from the surface during times when the surveillance sattelites are not above them. This only happens during rare 20 minute windows throughout the day and night. Otherwise you get zapped, or if the AI spots enough of you, nuked. The protaganist must find a way to set off an earth-to-space, or a space-to-space safety net that the humans failed to set off during the initial turn of the AI. Or destroy the HQ of the sattelites or whatever. I haven't worked out the kinks.

Feel free to steal the idea.
