“It’s hard to impeach somebody who hasn’t done anything wrong and who’s created the greatest economy in the history of our country,”

He is completely right about this. Whoever he is describing would be very hard to impeach!

Ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen jailed for 36 months

Michael Cohen, the former lawyer to Donald Trump who once said he’d take a bullet for the president, has been given a 36-month prison sentence.

He is the first member of Mr Trump's inner circle to be jailed over the special counsel's inquiry into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

He has pleaded guilty to multiple crimes including campaign finance violations, tax evasion and lying to Congress.

In court Cohen blasted his former boss.

Cohen, 52, told Judge William Pauley in the Manhattan courthouse that Mr Trump caused him to "follow a path of darkness rather than light".

He told the court his "weakness was a blind loyalty to Donald Trump."

Maria Butina's boyfriend claimed he set up Trump-Russia NRA "conduit" as campaign funds flowed
Source: Salon

Republican operative Paul Erickson claimed in an email he’d set up a private Russia-GOP channel through the NRA

IGOR DERYSH
DECEMBER 12, 2018 12:00PM (UTC)

Admitted Russian spy Maria Butina’s Republican operative boyfriend wrote in private communications that he was involved in setting up a “very private line of communication” between Russia and the Trump campaign using the National Rifle Association as a “conduit.”

Butina, a 30-year-old Russian gun rights activist, worked for years to cultivate relationships within Republican and NRA circles. She was charged with working as an agent of the Russian government earlier this year and on Monday agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy charges and cooperate with prosecutors.

In her plea deal, Butina admitted that she and “US Person 1,” who is longtime Republican operative Paul Erickson, “agreed and conspired, with a Russian government official,” whose description matches Russian banker and close Putin ally Alexander Torshin, for Butina to “act in the United States under the direction of Russian Official without prior notification to the Attorney General,” ABC News reported.

Under Torshin’s direction, the document said, Butina “sought to establish unofficial lines of communication with Americans having power and influence over U.S. politics.”

Donald Trump and Robert Mueller: The End Game

http://prospect.org/...ueller-end-game

Extract:

(American Prospect) Let’s review what special counsel Robert Mueller has on Trump. Based on the most recent combined filings of the special counsel and prosecutors at the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan, the evidence is piling up to document the following:

1. In September 2015, Trump personally approved the plan of personal lawyer and longtime fixer Michael Cohen to make high-level contacts with the Russian government to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. Cohen, according to Mueller’s seven-page memo, continued to talk with “Individual-1”—Donald Trump—well into the campaign. Even after Trump was nominated, these conversations continued, and with Trump’s full knowledge…

2. Trump misrepresented the nature of key meetings with senior Kremlin-connected Russians to discuss their collaboration for mutual benefit, including dirt on Hillary Clinton. Contrary to his earlier protestations, he was fully knowledgeable about the June 9, 2016, meeting at Trump Tower, which featured Donald Trump Jr., Paul Manafort, and Jared Kushner, in close communication with Trump Sr. Trump has repeatedly lied about this.

3. In another ring of the circus, Cohen confirmed to prosecutors that he advanced hush money for two women who said they had affairs with Trump, including the porn actress Stormy Daniels, and that this done at the direction of the same Individual-1 in order to protect his campaign—a felony. And evidence keeps piling up that Trump took actions as president to use his office to profit from his various hotel properties, and to win other financial favors from various foreign governments.

Still to come from Mueller could be more detail on tax evasion and possible money laundering by the Trump Organization, or bribes paid to foreigners in violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. And, in what may get himself even further into big trouble, Trump has publicly suggested that he might pardon former campaign manager Manafort for making a deal with the special counsel and then double-crossing Mueller.

Trump plans 16-day holiday visit to Mar-a-Lago
Source: The Palm Beach Post

By Christine Stapleton

Posted at 11:51 AM
Updated at 12:55 PM

President Donald Trump is expected to spend 16 days at Mar-a-Lago over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, according to an alert issued by the Federal Aviation Administration this morning.

The alert warns pilots to avoid the airspace over Mar-a-Lago during the more than two-week time frame, from Dec. 21 to Jan. 6, but does not indicate when Air Force One will arrive or depart Palm Beach International Airport.

The upcoming visit is longer than last year’s 12-day visit, putting Trump in Palm Beach a day earlier than his arrival last year and four days later than his Jan. 2 departure. It would be his longest retreat at Mar-a-Lago, dubbed the Southern White House, since the president’s inauguration in January 2017.

Trump’s extended stay means he will not be in Washington when the new Congress, including the Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, is sworn in on Jan. 3. That event will mark the end of the GOP’s eight-year grip on the House, although Republicans slightly increased their Senate majority in the 2018 midterm elections.

It also means the president’s new White House chief of staff may be named, or takeover, during the stretch of time Trump is at Mar-a-Lago.

Trump was in the room during hush money discussions, NBC News confirms
Source: NBC News

Donald Trump was the third person in the room in August 2015 when his lawyer Michael Cohen and National Enquirer publisher David Pecker discussed ways Pecker could help counter negative stories about Trump's relationships with women, NBC News has confirmed.

As part of a non-prosecution agreement disclosed Wednesday by federal prosecutors, American Media Inc., the Enquirer's parent company, admitted that "Pecker offered to help deal with negative stories about that presidential candidate's relationships with women by, among other things, assisting the campaign in identifying such stories so they could be purchased and their publication avoided."

The "Statement of Admitted Facts" says that AMI admitted making a $150,000 payment "in concert with the campaign," and says that Pecker, Cohen, and "at least one other member of the campaign" were in the meeting. According to a person familiar with the matter, the "other member" was Trump.

Trump Plans To File Appeal In Emoluments Case
Source: Talking Points Memo

By Josh Kovensky

December 14, 2018 9:44 am

President Trump is appealing a lower court’s decision not to throw out one of the emoluments cases against him, according to a Friday court filing.

In the document filed in federal court in Maryland, Trump gave notice that he intends to appeal the decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Trump made the filing in his individual capacity, and was not represented by government attorneys, but instead by attorney William Consovoy.

The appeal is coming in a case filed by the attorneys general for Maryland and DC, who allege that Trump is violating the constitution by accepting foreign gifts in the form of visits from foreign officials to his hotels.

DOJ attorneys acting for Trump in his official capacity had argued on Nov. 30 that Judge Peter Messitte should delay discovery in the case until the appeal was concluded. Messitte denied that request, and discovery began two weeks ago.

Dem: Cohen filing means Trump committed two felonies

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) argued Friday that federal prosecutors' latest filing in a case involving President Trump's former longtime attorney Michael Cohen means that Trump allegedly committed two felonies.

Lieu, a member of the House Judiciary Committee and frequent Trump critic, told MSNBC's Chris Matthews on "Hardball" that "we have a sitting president of the United States who committed two felonies while running for president.”....

Special counsel slams Michael Flynn's criticism of FBI interview
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)Special counsel Robert Mueller's team on Friday slammed a suggestion by Michael Flynn's lawyers last week that President Donald Trump's former national security adviser lied to the FBI not even a month into his tenure because he was caught off guard when two agents approached him.

However, Mueller's office said it would not change its recommendation that Flynn receive no jail time, given he has accepted responsibility for his actions and cooperated with the special counsel.

Mueller on Friday also released memos written by the FBI agents, and emphasized that when Flynn lied to them on January 24, 2017, about the substance of his policy conversations with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, he had already lied to several members of Trump's team and was "committed to his false story" that he and Kislyak did not discuss sanctions.

Flynn later said he had lied, and will be sentenced next week.

Mueller's 'mystery' grand jury witness likely fighting having to testify -- and could face jail time:
Source: Raw Story/NY Times

Tom Boggioni TOM BOGGIONI
15 DEC 2018 AT 22:02 ET

Although reporters were blocked from getting anywhere near a secret grand jury hearing being held in Washington, D.C. at the request of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigators, the New York Times has narrowed down what might be transpiring within the court room.

According to a new report, the NYT claims that it appears to be a battle over “whether a witness can be forced to answer investigators’ questions.” The report adds, “When witnesses refuse to cooperate, prosecutors often go to court to get a judge to send them to jail in order to pressure them to talk. Prosecutors are supposed to exhaust all other investigative avenues before doing this.”

The Times states that it is highly likely tied to President Donald Trump, although it is not a fight over whether Trump himself is the subject of the fight.

“Investigators have interviewed nearly all the White House and Justice Department officials who were directly involved in the episodes under scrutiny in the obstruction inquiry. But Mr. Mueller is still seeking to speak with several witnesses about ties between Mr. Trump’s campaign and Russia,” the report continues before suggesting it is questionable whether the public will ever know who it is — barring jail time or the person in question coming forward.

Top White House aide Stephen Miller made a combative Face the Nation appearance on Sunday, doubling down on President Donald Trump’s promise to shut down the government if Democrats don’t approve funding for a wall spanning the United States’s 1,933-mile border with Mexico in the next week.

“Absolutely,” Miller affirmed when asked if a government shutdown was on the table.

Trump’s Inauguration Committee Paid Trump’s Company — With Ivanka in the Middle

https://www.propubli...a-in-the-middle

Introduction:

(ProPublica) When it came out this year that President Donald Trump’s inaugural committee raised and spent unprecedented amounts, people wondered where all that money went.

It turns out one beneficiary was Trump himself.

The inauguration paid the Trump Organization for rooms, meals and event space at the company’s Washington hotel, according to interviews as well as internal emails and receipts reviewed by WNYC and ProPublica.

During the planning, Ivanka Trump, the president-elect’s eldest daughter and a senior executive with the Trump Organization, was involved in negotiating the price the hotel charged the 58th Presidential Inaugural Committee for venue rentals. A top inaugural planner emailed Ivanka and others at the company to “express my concern” that the hotel was overcharging for its event spaces, worrying of what would happen “when this is audited.”

If the Trump hotel charged more than the going rate for the venues, it could violate tax law. The inaugural committee’s payments to the Trump Organization and Ivanka Trump’s role have not been previously reported or disclosed in public filings.

Report: Russian troll farm included pro-Jill Stein messaging on social media
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)A report prepared for the Senate Intelligence Committee said Russian social media efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election included messaging in support of the Green Party 2016 presidential nominee Jill Stein.

CNN obtained the report, prepared by New Knowledge, which said the Russian government-linked Internet Research Agency -- a well-known troll farm -- utilized all major social media platforms, and its efforts online included messaging in support of Stein's third party presidential effort.
CNN has reached out to Stein for comment on the report.

The mentions of Stein online came alongside related and disparate messages noted throughout the report, which said the Internet Research Agency's themes ranged from support for Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders and the Black Lives Matter movement to the Tea Party and gun rights.

A summation of the report's findings on "comprehensive anti-Hillary Clinton operations" said while the group's assumed Twitter personas had some pro-Clinton content, "the developed Left-wing Twitter personas were still largely anti-Clinton and expressed pro-Bernie Sanders and pro-Jill Stein sentiments."

Michael Flynn sentencing postponed after dramatic hearing
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)BREAKING: President Donald Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn will not be sentenced Tuesday.

Flynn said Tuesday in a federal court that "I was aware" that lying to the FBI is a crime.

Flynn pleaded guilty a year ago to lying to federal investigators and is being sentenced by Judge Emmet Sullivan of the US District Court for the District of Columbia, who has had very strong words for the defendant.

"I want to be frank with you, this crime is very serious," Sullivan said. "Not only did you lie to the FBI, you lied to senior officials in the incoming administration."

"All along, you were an unregistered agent of a foreign country while serving as the national security adviser to the President of the United States," Sullivan said. "That undermines everything this flag over here stands for. Arguably you sold your country out."

Sullivan later corrected himself, noting Flynn's foreign lobbying ended prior to the beginning of the Trump administration.
