I wanted to make a Progressive Watch Thread but didn't want to be biased. Thus, a Conservative Watch Thread. Knock yourselves out, have fun.

Right wingers in Germany planned to assassinate MPs.

Pretty crazy

I haven't encountered DW a huge amount, but they're a professional organisation with competent journalists, and I've found their videos on YT to be of high quality in terms of message and production.

A soldier in the Bundeswehr has been charged with planning to carry out attacks on high-ranking political figures and frame refugees for the crimes. The justice minister was among those on his hit list.

P.s., can we get word-style crazy fonts for titles? I would love to be able to make a title and have it stylised in orange and yellow in 3D art

Ronald Reagan’s Long-Hidden Racist Conversation With Richard Nixon

In newly unearthed audio, the then–California governor disparaged African delegates to the United Nations.

You know the actor John Wayne ("The Duke"), that Reagan was often compared to? He was also racist:

Trump is drafting an order to regulate Facebook and Twitter for bias -- ‘They’re treating conservatives very unfairly,’ says Trump

https://www.theverge...nservative-bias

Just as Corey Robin has said repeatedly: the conservative movement isn't about high-minded principles like "free market", "deregulation", or "freedom of speech". It's about the felt-experience of having power and privilege, seeing it threatened, and then doing whatever it takes to win it back.

Let's hear it from conservatives: do you think this is a repulsive act of government overreach?

Plus, many conservatives are often hypocrites -- those self-proclaimed "free speech absolutists" are only so when it's convenient & serves their own interests. Pointing this out to them does nothing, though, since they typically care little about being ideologically consistent.

The way it works -- whether liberal or conservative -- is like this: there is some speaker or writer who is writing something very unpopular (e.g. racist or sexist); and they are being prevented from getting their way by peer pressure, by businesses using their rights to control private forums (e.g. private universities), or by political correctness. None of these are strictly the kind of "freedom of speech" enshrined into law, where the federal government is not allowed to prosecute or interfere in public speech.

So, they get all huffy and mad that their favorite racist isn't allowed to stand up on a podium and make jokes about the inferiority of minorities. "We've just gone too far. I believe in FREEDOM, and this PC climate is killing it."

But now let's say you have a private Christian conservative college, where an abortion rights advocate is invited to speak. What do you think will happen? Often, the speaker is quickly disinvited, and the person who invited them, fired. "This kind of talk doesn't reflect our Christian values."

This example (Christian colleges) is actually not one I thought up. I read it one time in an essay by one of the early 1990s scholars that picked apart conservative talking points about Political Correctness. His essay was all about how conservative interference in free speech is a much larger phenomenon than the liberal counterpart.

Leaked emails show Washington state Rep. Matt Shea endorsed training children to fight in holy war

A week before his re-election last year, state Rep. Matt Shea denied that a leaked manifesto he wrote was a road map for a holy war, one that would pit conservative Christian “patriots” against Muslim and Marxist “terrorists.”
Rather, Shea insisted, the document titled “Biblical Basis for War” contained notes for a scholarly sermon on war in the Old Testament.
But newly leaked emails, first reported by The Guardian on Wednesday, as well as a video on Shea’s public Facebook page, show the Spokane Valley Republican has had close ties with a group called Team Rugged that trained children, teens and men in their early 20s for religious combat.
“The entire purpose behind Team Rugged is to provide patriotic and biblical training on war for young men,” a man identified as the group’s leader, Patrick Caughran, wrote in a July 2016 email to Shea. “Everything about it is both politically incorrect and what would be considered shocking truth to most modern christians. There will be scenarios where every participant will have to fight against one of the most barbaric enemies that are invading our country, Muslims terrorists.”

And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

Speaking of Quillette, RationalWiki has a page on them:

https://rationalwiki...te#cite_note-26

This part is amusing and sad:

In February 2019 Quillette Published so-called "research" which was supposed to "prove" that "Twitter Treats Conservatives More Harshly Than Liberals"[26]; the data includes many shining examples of modern conservatism:

George Zimmerman; for posting nude pictures of his ex-girlfriend without her consent.[27] Conservative Family Values™!

Richard Spencer; neo-Nazi and founder of the alt-right.

American Nazi Party; yes, really. Are you fucking kidding?

David Duke; former KKK grand wizard.

Jared Taylor; "race realist" with a decades-long career in "proving" that there are genetic IQ differences between blacks and whites.

American Renaissance; publication of Jared Taylor.

Gavin McInnes; white nationalist; founder of Proud Boys.

Proud Boys; basically a terrorist organisation because "boo hoo feminism".

Radix JournalWikipedia's W.svg; white nationalist publication.

Alex Jones, InfoWars; 'nuff said.

Traditionalist Worker PartyWikipedia's W.svg; more neo-Nazis.

Tila TequilaWikipedia's W.svg; "Social media personality" – whatever that may mean – who writes articles with titles such as "Why I Sympathize with Hitler" and poses in tasteful outfits.

National Policy Institute; white nationalist "think tank"; current president is the aforementioned Richard Spencer.

Craig BrittainWikipedia's W.svg; revenge pornographer, banned for accusing Parkland survivors of faking the attack.

Baked Alaska; alt-right troll; has since criticized the alt-right for radicalising people, including the Christchurch mosque shooter.[28]

League of the South; neo-Confederate, white supremacist.

James Allsup; member of neo-Nazi group Identity Evropa.

Jayda FransenWikipedia's W.svg; one of the top minds of Britain First.

Paul GoldingWikipedia's W.svg; leader of Britain First; former BNP.

Paul Nehlen; neo-Nazi. Proposed to decorate Trump's wall with automatic turrets and that every Mexican should "be treated as an enemy combatant. Man, woman or child".[29]

Mike Enoch; neo-Nazi, founder of the hate site The Right Stuff. Inventor of (((echo))).

The Quillette article referred-to sounds so serious, and talks about the 21:1 bias against conservatives in a formal, dispassionate tone. Yet, on that list are actual Nazis. Are we to infer that conservatives now consider Nazism to be "conservative" (previously, conservatives have called it "liberal" or "Left")?

....

Honestly, this looks almost like it was another Sokal-style hoax carried out against Quillette -- except... the claims were never retracted.

Jacob Wohl Wanted on Felony Arrest Warrant

https://www.thedaily...-arrest-warrant

Wohl’s detractors have often puzzled over how, until now, he had avoided serious legal consequences. That’s because Wohl has routinely pushed the legal and political envelope to seemingly absurd lengths.

In November 2018, Wohl teamed up with Washington lobbyist Jack Burkman for a spectacularly failed attempt to concoct a bogus sexual assault smear against then-Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The pair also attempted to fake a similar allegation against Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg, which flopped after The Daily Beast obtained audio of Wohl and Burkman trying to pressure a potential “victim” into making a false allegation against Buttigieg.

In February, Wohl faked a death threat against himself, then reported the bogus crime to Minneapolis police. This summer, a phone number associated with Wohl was used to threaten a former GOP campaign worker, although Wohl denied involvement in the incident.

Another example of Quillette publishing bullshit:

https://mobile.twitt...4755484677?s=20

@LitAnscombe
here's Quillette's tweet publicizing their paper by the fraud who somehow got through their absolutely rigorous and very real fact checkers. Took a screen shot in case they delete it.

Oh, this is great... and from earlier this year:

https://twitter.com/...092204279296001

Current Affairs published a cartoon showing how ridiculously stupid the conservative notion of US college campuses is. Someone took the label off, and r/The_Donald upvoted it without realizing it was a joke at their expense.

Leaked Emails Show How White Nationalists Have Infiltrated Conservative Media

https://splinternews...ltra-1837681245

Where have we heard this kind of language before:

“Jonah . . . [t]his is our safe space to be edgy online before God Emperor Trump penetrates the internet,” the participant continued, filling Bennett in on the list of code words.

Never ceases to amaze me, how low the far-right will go.

---

A protester who called for Americans to 'eat the babies' to fight climate change at AOC's town hall was revealed as a member of a pro-Trump fringe group

Oct 4, 2019, 3:44 PM

On Thursday night, a protester disrupted a town hall held by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Queens, New York, yelling that Americans should "eat the babies" and "bomb Russia" to reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change.

Ocasio-Cortez, an outspoken Democratic freshman congresswoman, attempted to calm the woman down, saying that "we all need to understand that there are a lot of solutions that we have" to slow climate change.

Right-wing media outlets and online provocateurs, including Breitbart, The Daily Wire, and the activist Candace Owens, quickly jumped on the exchange, accusing Ocasio-Cortez of condoning the woman's calls to "eat babies."

The Fox News host Tucker Carlson said it was "pretty revealing" that Ocasio-Cortez didn't reject the woman's comments.

[...]

But soon after a video of the incident went viral on Thursday night, a far-right fringe group called the LaRouche movement announced on Twitter that it was behind the protester.

Incidentally, the LaRouche movement, for those who don't know, has been around for a long time. When I lived for a few years in California, I used to see their newspaper everywhere -- they had their own paper and followers. It's been around for decades, as hasn't always been "right wing". In fact, it changes ideology about every couple years, from "right wing" to "left wing".
