Republicans storm closed-door hearing to protest impeachment inquiry

https://thehill.com/...hment-testimony

Ha, ha, ha! It's a stunt, and probably very carefully planned. The other day, GOP political operatives were weighing their options, and this is what they came up with.

Why? Because it plays good on TV to the poor, and deluded (who I have a great deal of sympathy for, as a matter of fact), who think Trump is trying to help them, as the liberals try to take it all away. The storm-the-testimony act says: we're fighting for you! We're going to drain that swamp!

And people wonder how something as screwed-up as the 2008/2009 financial collapse could have happened. It ultimately boils down to people putting their trust in grifters, not knowing they are grifters.

THEY READ THE HEADLINE AND JUST RAN WITH IT”: HOW MAGA MEDIA BUILT THE UKRAINE STORY THAT’S BECOME TRUMP’S LAST LINE OF DEFENSE

Back in 2017, in the days before Donald Trump stormed the White House, Breitbart reporter Lee Stranahan digested what he believed to be an explosive, game-changing story: As Russian operatives were busy trying to secure the 2016 election for Trump, certain Ukrainian officials had been conspiring on the other side to boost Hillary Clinton, including by helping a Ukrainian-American DNC consultant dig up dirt on Paul Manafort. “I could just see this was a big deal,” Stranahan told me, recalling how he dove deeper and deeper into the story—or, as some people might call it, a rabbit hole.

The hypnotic notion that Ukraine, not Russia, was the true villain of the 2016 election story proved irresistible for several reasons. Most immediately, it provided fodder for the theory that Russia might have been set up, and that Trump was the victim of an even more sinister, globe-spanning conspiracy to delegitimize his presidency. And the timing was perfect: To Stranahan, a Democratic operative hunting for oppo in Ukraine was just one thread hinting at a vast counter-narrative to the mainstream story of the day: that Russian intelligence forces orchestrated the hacking and leak of DNC and Clinton campaign emails that may have tipped the scales of the election.

Stranahan, now a radio host at the Kremlin-owned Sputnik International, was one of several fringe media figures who began pushing the Ukraine story at the same time that liberal media figures like Rachel Maddow were entering into a two-year-long obsession with Russiagate. “As usual, the rabbit hole gets much deeper the more you look,” wrote Liberty Blitzkrieg writer Michael Krieger in March 2017, intimating that CrowdStrike—a cybersecurity firm that fingered Russian intelligence outfits for the DNC hack—had fudged its analysis. Gateway Pundit decried the “refusal” by credible journalists to investigate alleged collusion between the DNC and Ukraine to get Clinton elected president. In at least one version of the counter-conspiracy theory—dismissed even by Trump’s own aides—CrowdStrike faked the DNC server data it provided the FBI in order to frame
Russia.

Didn't I see far-Leftist Matt Taibbi recently insinuate on Twitter that Hillary was just as bad as Trump at applying leverage to a foreign power in that region of the world, to investigate a political rival?

"8 year old Courtney and her family live off £5 a day – they rely on a food bank to eat, and wear coats to bed when there's no money for heating. This is Britain today, where more than 4 million children are growing up in poverty."

Twitter conspiracy nonsense

https://thebulletin....iracy-nonsense/

(Bulletin of Atomic Scientists) The Twitter account @IndoPac_Info pushes out news at a relentless pace; it’s a seemingly good feed to follow for those interested in military issues in Asia. By Friday afternoon last week, the account had posted dozens of tweets over a 36-hour-or-so period linking to stories from outlets such as Reuters and Foreign Policy on topics ranging from US naval activity in contested waters to Pentagon drone policy. Oh yeah, and then there was the one about a nuclear detonation in the South China Sea.

The big news that China had perhaps exploded a tactical nuclear weapon in the ocean originated with a man labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a former federal convict, white supremacist, and FBI informant named Hal Turner. Turner posted the story on his website and touted the supposed scoop further on his nighttime AM radio show, attributing the information to military sources. On Friday, a Pentagon spokesperson called Turner’s article “silly fiction.” And the man behind @IndoPac_Info himself—he describes himself as a Spanish man living in Vietnam—now seems to agree. “Without further evidence or independent corroboration of Hal Turner’s article, it may not be credible at this point,” he tweeted.

“Apologies.”

A laudable course correction, no doubt, but it came after one of @IndoPac_Info’s tweets on the Turner story was retweeted almost 2,000 times.

The principles of justice define an appropriate path between dogmatism and intolerance on the one side, and a reductionism which regards religion and morality as mere preferences on the other.   - John Rawls

So even with megafires visible from NASA probes a million miles away, and over 10% of Oregon's population evacuated, Conservatives like Tucker Carlson are still at the "climate change doesn't even exist" stage.

And Carlson is rumoured to be a candidate for 2024.

I agree with Chomsky who describes Republicans as the most dangerous organisation on Earth.

They don't care about anything unless it directly affects them. Always the way.

"The future will be better tomorrow.  If we do not succeed, then we run the risk of failure.   For NASA, space is still a high priority. The Holocaust was an obscene period in our nation's history. No, not our nation's, but in World War II. I mean, we all lived in this century. I didn't live in this century, but in this century's history. Republicans understand the importance of bondage between a mother and child. We're going to have the best-educated American people in the world."  Dan Quayle
