Virtually all save icons in all programs use the Floppy Disk icon, and since young people are starting to say "Whats the floppy disk?", there will come a time when it needs to be replaced.

But what with?

I think they should replace this icon with a memory stick.

I don't think it's necessary to replace the icon with something new, infact I think it'd cause some confusion with people who are used to the floppy/save symbol.

And for nothing because in a few decades who's to say we'll still use usb sticks?

I don't know the origin of many commonplace symbols, it doesn't much matter so long as I know what the symbol stands for.

Haha, I suppose they could.

I think this is a case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Reminds me of Windows and their constant new versions. There's nothing wrong with Windows 7, yet they make it obsolete and keep bothering you to upgrade. ;)

They should just put a picture of a brain, for memory. So your saving it to memory, whatever form that might take.

That would be a nightmare for haemophobes like me. ;)They should just come up with a new symbol that resembles the act of saving something - such as a symbol containing the letter S.

Do you know the origin of the 'stop' 'play' 'pause' 'fast forward' 'rewind' and 'chapter skip' buttons?

I know the origin of the pause symbol is from around the 16th century, when it was used to show where a caesura (pause in the middle of a line) was in poetry.

It's just an icon you associate with saving. I mean the icon on here for "removal format" is an eraser, who uses those now a days? As long as you know what the icon does, it doesn't matter where it originally came from. Changing such common practices is way more dangerous.

It's not an eraser, it's a rubber! It's a bloody rubber! Don't let the Americans tell you otherwise! ;)

I don't know either.  I was making a point that people don't need to change them to be relevant.

I looked back on the previous posts and it looks like someone else already made that point though.
