Do you think that in the future, it will be possible to control incoming and outgoing noise?

For example to sleep properly without putting on painful earplugs, to throw parties without annoying your neighbors, to protect your ears during home improvement times, or gigs, or whatever...

What do you think about that?

Definitely possible with auditory cloaking technology using metamaterials. Heck, we're already trying to cloak objects from certain electromagnetic wavelengths as well as, recently, heat.

What are you without the sum of your parts?

Silent electric engines for cars and planes, sound proof walls in houses, silent appliances... the future will be a very quiet affair!

Of course, but silencing things is only the beginning. For instance, someone could focus a song directly into their ears without the aid of earphones by using a 'sound beam' and instruments could magnify sound without speakers or a microphone.

That would be fantastic, imagine to have an apartment in the middle of New York and keep everything silent like you are in the middle of the forest.

I believe that around 30s we may have this type of technology.

you know what I would love? A silent blender... probably about the noisiest thing in my house. I wouldn't mind seeing a project where a house is using active noise cancelling though, that would be cool.

If everything was silent except speech and music, the world would be a very nice place. By the next century, I think this may be the case.

Transhumanism might be good in that case - you could, perhaps, block certain noises that you don't want to hear.

I disagree, what about wildlife?

And unnecessary human noises (eg speech not intended to yourself at home, biological noises...) are not necessary.

Ultimately, a powerful ubiquitous AI should choose whether a noise is useful or not for us to be heared, and then we'd be able to hear only useful and/or pleasant things.
