I don't understand why so many people hate Avatar. I really enjoyed it.
Let me explain my position for the 3rd time (my internet crapped out while typing, twice.)
As an artist, I was stunned by the visual beauty of this movie. This is pretty much 90% of the reason I went to see it. However, the novelty wore off about a week after I watched it and the troper in me could look at the movie with a critical eye.
The movie itself sucks. Its plot it brings nothing new to the table, and as mentioned it's basically Dances with Wolves IN SPACE. The worst part: it feels to me like James Cameron wrote the movie just to showcase his perfect Mary Suetopia of blue cat people and how much better they are than us pink squishy humans.
Pro tip: invoke nothing of the Mary Sue and its kin tropes, because that's a perfect way to piss people off. Mary Sues are telltale signs of piss-poor writing and characterization, a common denizen of amateur fanfiction, but when a whole race of them is starred in a feature film you know something is up.
And now for a bit of nitpicking: the Naavi do NOT look as if they evolved from any other indigenous life on Pandora. Just sayin'.
Moral of the movie: James Cameron's tall blue imaginary fur-smurfs are perfect, humans suck. Plus a whole lot of White Guilt.
Seriously, IMO James Cameron is one of Hollywood's most overrated figures.
EDIT: And what are the sequels going to be about? The first movie tied the end up in terms of the main characters' personal lives, except the fact that humans are still invaders and would fuck shit up upon their return to Pandora with a full-fledged military fleet and nuclear weapons.
