James Cameron promises a new Avatar movie every year, starting in 2016

There are going to be a whole mess of Avatar movies coming out — a whole new trilogy in fact.

20th Century Fox and director James Cameron have set a date for the start of the annual Avatar-slaught. The first sequel will debut in December or 2016. And then in 2017 and 2018 the second and third movies will be released in theaters.

I think avatar will definitely be up there with the classics that people talk about when it comes to all time famous sci fi movies. Such as back to the future, terminator, i Robot etc.

I don't think it will ever be considered a classic being that the plot is a complete rip off of an already classic movie.

I thought Avatar was a pretty good movie. Maybe it's a classic but history will ultimately decide.

“After seeing the evidence, I realized this lawsuit had no merit and that James Cameron is really just a lazy screenwriter,” Judge Morrow told Hollywood & Swine.  “Someone needs to show ‘Avatar’ to Kevin Costner, because I think he may have a really good lawsuit.”

I don't understand why so many people hate Avatar. I really enjoyed it.

James Cameron is a terrible screen writer and ripped the entire movie off from Dances with Wolves as I've already twice posted. You're not enjoying Avatar, you're enjoying Dances with Wolves when you watch it. That's why people didn't like it, because it wasn't an original movie.

Take a look at this quote that I believe is from an Avatar-Warhammer 40k crossover fan fiction. That's right, someone who writes crossover fan fiction writes better than James Cameron. Imagine how much the line could have improved the movie by making the bad guys relatable.

I too actually liked Avatar a lot. Can't wait for the sequels. I think that the humans will probably come back in the 2016 movie, and take over that moon (can't remember the name)

For me, the sheer visual experience of the movie - its beautifully rendered creatures, enchanting forests and alien characters - outweighed the downsides.

It was graphically spectacular and there is simply no denying this.

I've never seen Dances with wolves, so I can't comment on how similar it is - but I take your point, Brohanne Jahms. Hopefully with Avatars 2, 3 and 4 they can produce a more original storyline.

Yeah it is similar to Dances with the wolves, but cinema has been is teling same storiies for almost century now. There's nothing wrong with it as long as you tell this story right. And he does. And if someone thinks he's a terrible screenwriter he should see Aliens and True Lies again. Especially the second one. It's a remake by the way but it's better in every way than french movie in every way possible, script included.

Yeah, I suppose he did do some good movies. It just irks me that it's predecessor gets no credit when I feel it's the superior film.

I don't understand why so many people hate Avatar. I really enjoyed it.

Let me explain my position for the 3rd time (my internet crapped out while typing, twice.)

As an artist, I was stunned by the visual beauty of this movie. This is pretty much 90% of the reason I went to see it. However, the novelty wore off about a week after I watched it and the troper in me could look at the movie with a critical eye.

The movie itself sucks. Its plot it brings nothing new to the table, and as mentioned it's basically Dances with Wolves IN SPACE. The worst part: it feels to me like James Cameron wrote the movie just to showcase his perfect Mary Suetopia of blue cat people and how much better they are than us pink squishy humans.

Pro tip: invoke nothing of the Mary Sue and its kin tropes, because that's a perfect way to piss people off. Mary Sues are telltale signs of piss-poor writing and characterization, a common denizen of amateur fanfiction, but when a whole race of them is starred in a feature film you know something is up.

And now for a bit of nitpicking: the Naavi do NOT look as if they evolved from any other indigenous life on Pandora. Just sayin'.

Moral of the movie: James Cameron's tall blue imaginary fur-smurfs are perfect, humans suck. Plus a whole lot of White Guilt.

Seriously, IMO James Cameron is one of Hollywood's most overrated figures.

EDIT: And what are the sequels going to be about? The first movie tied the end up in terms of the main characters' personal lives, except the fact that humans are still invaders and would fuck shit up upon their return to Pandora with a full-fledged military fleet and nuclear weapons.
