Apparently you guys don't consider Worldometers as a reliable source, despite the fact that it's one of the most well-researched statistics websites on the net. Each to their own, I guess.

But your whole "average wage is 2 dollars" is bogus no offense. That was because your time was at midnight, so it was going from the start of the day.

I believe it is 24 dollars hourly, so that is 192 dollars.

Its a reliable source if you know how to read it...

..?? We're merely saying you misinterpreted the average pay you were looking at since the counter recently restarted itself based on your time.

Well, as average pay clearly isn't enough to convince you, this graph is from BBC News:

China have already overtaken the USA in scientific literature, and are projected to in scientific research in the next few years. This will boost their economy even further.

^ Scientific literature alone does not measure a country's standard of living nor its standing among peers in world affairs.

Look at UK or Germany, even though their scentific literature citation rate is much lower than that of China's, their per capita GDP (PPP) is still much higher.

China is #92 in the world w/ PPP per capita of $9,233 while Germany and UK are #17 and #21 respectively.

http://en.wikipedia....PPP)_per_capita

China needs to fundamentally change the way it governs itself in relation to its own citizens in order to significantly rise the standard of living within its borders.

LOL, the UK and Germany are nowhere near as high up the podium as China! Are you having a laugh? And China are #2 in GDP: http://en.wikipedia....y_GDP_(nominal) They're also accelerating at a faster rate than the USA.

Also, Lunix, by that list, Luxembourg is the current world superpower. GDP per capita is only when taken into context with the population, so it doesn't determine the leading country. Luxembourg has a tiny population.

I've noticed something

FutureofZimbabwe you seem to support China lot - almost as if you dislike America. There's not a right/wrong answer with this..

Are you sympathetic with the Chinese?

But GDP per capita is an indicator of quality of life.

I don't consider a country with a low quality of life a superpower

He didn't say that. Many other factors besides GDP have to be considered for that. Political, social, cultural, health, infrastructure, military power, etc. The US leads in many of those. Since when is GDP per capita itself automatically linked to superpower status.

No, he didn't. He suggested that China wasn't the second leading world superpower as it wasn't second on that list. Using that weird logic, Luxembourg should be the leading world superpower. If he says that it's not, he's being biased.

He was actually countering your argument though on that because you were using GDP instead of GDP per capita which is a better indicator of a developed economy. China may have a big GDP but per capita it is still world's away from the developed nations. He still didn't say explicitly that it was what indicated superpower status.

...

I never said Luxembourg is currently the leading world power.

I said, I wouldn't consider China to be overtaking the USA if they have a very low quality of life compared to western countries, along with the fact that their GDP per capita is actually low.

Its a factor.

Of course Luxembourg is a cockroach compared to China in terms of power.

GDP per capita is not a good indicator at all, because it only takes into account how well a country is doing in relation to that country's population, instead of the country as a whole. The smaller the country, the smaller the "rich population" it requires to get higher up the list. China is the largest country in the world, so having the second largest GDP in the world is a huge indicator of a country that is doing well. http://www.ft.com/cm...l#axzz2jQfnQwDY
