Set in the future, of course. Let's all decide what to do with it... Where's it set, what's the year? What's technology like? What technologies are you developing? Stuff like that.

And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

What is RP?

Year: 2175 C.E.

Place: Central Africa, Earth

Cultural overview: Central Africa is poking its head out of a dark age. It is still an area trapped in superstition and violence, but people can live a bit more comfortably now than they did. All around them the world is changing for the stranger, and they have to find ways to deal with it. Their environment has been ravaged for resources, so they have to accept charity from other nations.

Small companies begin springing up to take advantage of the potential for solar power, given the advancements in this field, the climate, and the lack of any other natural resources.

And then...ok, next, somebody else go...

The political climate is hot, the major issues surrounding the changes affecting the rest of the world. First world countries are fully automated with god-like AIs. Transhumanism is rampant in these parts.

Their charity mostly involves sending robots and 3D printers their way. Of course, lacking infrastructure, they can't make good use of it. Some businesses take this into account as well.

There are large headquarters for multinational corporations located here. Most of the financial work is done by A.I. Transhumanism still is very rare here and people in the countryside are certain that transhumans are the work of the devil, and must be killed.

It is mindless anti-government idiocy. If it isn't turned back I predict the end of this country as a world power. Simply put the need to educate our entire population like any sane country is sen as wrong by the cult that practice this foolish idiocy. So is simple workers rights, child labor and every other sane policy of the modern world."

Much of the ecosystem has been devastated on the previous century, due to global warming, however, there are now plans being made for a global rewilding effort. It was believed that this wouldn't be possible until the 23rd century, but dues to exponential progress rates, it will be possible by 2200.

Central Africa and no mention of a space elevator yet?

This is an RP; if you feel the need to add something, by all means, do :)

That said:

At the heart of Central Africa is one of three International Space Elevators, located on the equatorial Congo. The other two are in Ecuador and Indonesia.

While located on Congo soil, it has been stressed that it is international property, and that nobody is to profit from its use. Many Africans are resentful of being used in such a way while being forced to live on the charity of the nations that use their land for industry.

There are small underground groups of Luddites in Congo, who are doing everything that they can to destroy the Congolese space elevator. So far, they have a drone, but that's it. Terrorist attacks are common in the first world, as people from the devastated third world countries absolutely despise everyone living in a safe environment. The first world countries are mostly united, to form the Hemisphere Alliance. This includes the Americas, Europe, Oceania and Eastern Asia.

The African governments, on the other hand, are fragmented plutocracies and fiercely competitive to earn the trust and help of the Hemisphere. They do everything they can to keep the Luddites in check. While competing for aid, they often work together to squelch opposition.

On the other extreme of the spectrum are the Cultists, who desperately want to join the Hemisphere and its network of AI. This movement had its roots in rationalist and progress, but over the years has evolved into a cult-like superstition, with members often ritualistically replacing parts of their brains with comparatively crude computers and even going so far as to perform human sacrifices to impress the gods of the Hemisphere.

The Hemisphere is none too impressed and doesn't care for them much, but is flattered by the attempts. The governments and corporations do their best to keep both these factions down. The Hemisphere looks upon the Luddites with disdain and puts pressure on the local governments to suppress them in the interests of preserving the Elevator.

The Hemisphere has got a leader, however, the title is ceremonial. The current leader is Steve Jobs, reincarnate. They change the leader every 6 months. Everyone in the Hemisphere is like a god, and lives on conditions that would be comparable to heaven. Because of this, no matter how progressed the rest of the world is, they will always be destitute in comparison with the Hemisphere. Inside the Hemisphere, there are no countries per se. However, some places still have a very strong culture. For example, Ireland has undergone a cultural revolution, and the old music and Celtic lifestyle are being taken up again, as the immortals return to their ancient roots, they begin to live a more natural lifestyle. Ireland is seen as a leader in conservation across the world, and more places are following suit, and returning to live like their ancestors. This is seriously he!ping out the environment. These people still have access to all the cutting-edge tech of the time. There are still cities and city states of course, full of those who only love technology and not nature. A lot of the people living here are mostly plugged into FIVR world and universes.

  • LocationThe Universe.

The situation in the Hemisphere could not be more different to the situation on Mars. While they both have AIs and advanced technology, that is where the similarity ends. The Hemisphere, with its philosophy strongly based on Western, and in particular American, individuality, mostly uses its technology to improve the life of its citizens, human and AI, as much as possible, with things like life extension and VR. Its citizens tend to take a hedonistic, atheistic approach to life, being relatively disinterested in helping the third world.

On the other hand, the culture of Mars is based on the Dharmic and pantheistic philosophies of the initial settlers not afraid of hardship. Combined with the difficulties of terraforming, and the relative ease of working in low gravity, this has evolved into a culture convinced that the ultimate purpose of life is to spread it across the universe, with no individualistic goals, and thus no fear of an individual's death. Most Martians, human and AI, work to achieve this goal by managing terraforming, sustainable energy, creating hive minds, and looking for potential destinations to travel and spread life to.

Turns out it wasn't actually THE universe, it was just some simulation a bratty Hemisphere kid on Earth was running. Life proceeded as normal.
