This supernova that exploded over 50 million years ago and whose light finally reached us 4 years ago...

In recent years, when I've read about these galactic distances, I often think of when I'm playing Elite: Dangerous. In the background sky box, you sometimes catch sight of a fuzzy white blob, which is Andromeda (M31). This is over 2.5 million light years away, a staggeringly vast distance compared to most of the long-distance journeys you make (which are typically a few thousand light years) – and you can't even go to Andromeda in-game, because it's so damn far away. Ditto for other galaxies, and smaller dwarf galaxies such as the Magellanic Clouds that appear in the background.

And then I read about these galaxies in other neighbouring clusters and superclusters, which are tens of millions, or hundreds of millions of light years away – and entire orders of magnitude greater still, as we get into the billions of light years.

It just blows my mind, and I can't comprehend it. I get what I can only describe as this creeping sense of dread, at the sheer, cold, infinite, black vastness.

And staying on the subject of space... here's a wonderful image of a new impact crater that's formed on Mars!

A polar bear leaps over water on sea ice in Canada. The animals rely on the ice for hunting but it has been melting in recent years.

In light of recent news of how the Milky Way galaxy was formed, I'd just like to share its stunning beauty.

9000x9000x image of the Sun

It's so big, I don't want to post it directly here in case it crashes the thread. But do be sure to zoom in.
