It depends on when the next consoles come out. If Sony and Microsoft really wait until 2016 to release the next consoles, then maybe they can achieve Avatar level graphics (but probably not). Most likely two generations from now.I doubt it too, the computatonal power needed to render Avatar-like graphics in at least 30 fps is much greater than today's most powerful PC so even if the new consoles are 4x better than it still it's not enough. I would consider the next generation having Avatar graphics but, really, such graphics will probably happen in the mid 20's of the XXI century.
Apart from that, NPCs today are just too stupid (even in Oblivion), physics sometimes fail (vide HL2), living things happen to go inside textures (like someone's foot in BF:BC2 inside ground). There are many different aspects need to be changed than just graphics. For smarter NPC I look for TESV: Skyrim.

I hope videogames like these aren't mostly replaced by games with ultrarealistic graphics.

Kinect 2
The next iteration of Microsoft's Kinect accessory appears to be an incremental improvement over the current hardware. Microsoft references higher accuracy, stereo imaging, improved voice recognition, support for four player tracking, improved RGB camera, and dedicated hardware processing. One particular aspect of the leaked slides is a focus on four player gaming and Kinect props. "In Kinect v2 we can continue to go beyond controllers and offer peripherals and accessories that heighten game immersion," reads a note section of one of the slides. The Kinect accessories idea appears to be one that is not designed to replace controllers, but will allow devices to interact with the sensor. Microsoft's plans for four player Kinect gaming reference carnival, darts, and basketball games as a broad way to use the new tracking.
Kinect Glasses (project Fortaleza)
Microsoft lays out a roadmap for its "Fortaleza" Kinect Glasses — which appears to be a research project the company is working on. There's little mention of the hardware involved, but the glasses appear to be Wi-Fi- or 4G-enabled and incorporate augmented reality in a way that's similar to Google's Project Glass augmented reality glasses. Described as a "breakthrough heads up and hands-free device," Kinect Glasses is marked as a 2014 product that won't launch alongside the Xbox 720 console. Microsoft doesn't provide any specifics about how the glasses will work on the Xbox, but they do appear to be designed to be mobile for use away from the console.

I actually came across this game called "infinity quest for earth", that I think will revolutionize the MMO genre forever:
I know the game features only one planet but the developer plans on using procedural generation to generate an ENTIRE GALAXY (200 billion star systems). Here is his website: http://www.infinity-....com/Infinity/. I'm a space sci-fi fan and have been disappointed with today's games restrictions on space that limits tghe exploration part of space games (exploration being precisely what allows space to stand out from other settings). Even EVE online - the best space game there is today- lacks any real exploration feature. With 200billion star systems to explore, there will be plenty for explorers to keep them occupied.
I discovered this game in early 2012, but the developers have been working on it since about 2005 and they are still far from completing it. (huge mmo, small group of part-time devs) They had decided to launch a kickstarter for it in early 2013. But, they have considered the risks and the possibility of failure and they have decided to launch a kickstarter for an arena space shooter(by arena, I mean an entire solar system) in Q3 2013 as a stepping stone for securing enough funds to develop the full game at a later date. You can read about their progress here if you're interested:http://www.infinity-...d=121&Itemid=26
I've started playing EVE online a few weeks ago (my avatar is proof of that) and the problem with exploration is that the game is small in comparison to infinity and focuses mostly on the bussiness part, not on the "flying a spaceship around the galaxy" part.

I have also been following Infinity as well - actually, I've been checking the website for updates. The arena space shooter Tuluk-Jei was mentioning is going to be called Infinity: Battlescape. It's not going to incorporate 200 billion star systems that Infinity will eventually aim for but will involve an entire solar system and the scale of space between planets as well as planets themselves is exactly 1:1 as in reality. It's mind-boggling.
The developers are planning to use I:B as a stepping stone towards their eventual masterpiece: Infinity: Quest for Earth. If things go as planned, I:B will give the developers experience, business acumen, expert personnel and of course the tens of millions of dollars necessary to construct the "holy grail" space simulation game.

It does not have to be on a hard drive. If the game is an MMO, most of the world data would be held in servers. It would take high Internet speeds and inventive client programs to have the bulk work of the game cloud based, but it could be done. But as previous posts have shown, the game won't start out with and will probably not ever have "200 billion" planets.200 BILLION star systems?!? Think of how much space that would take up on a hard drive! Even if they were to only save it as 'this system contains default_planet_12, default_star_6 and default_background_16' the game would still be measured in terabytes!

Apparently the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 5 video game is supposed to feature near photorealistic graphics.
Compared with GTA 4 from 2008, it's a pretty huge development.

Also check out the new video for unreal engine 4:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.c...bed/dO2rM-l-vdQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
The description says it is real-time rendering, not pre-rendered cutscene. Regarding what happens in the video, I thought it would make a good scene from EVE: minmattar mercenary infiltrates caldari industrial facility on amarrian colony, and in the end he fights an experimental caldari drone.

That is pretty spectacular. Incredible graphics there. I wonder how graphics will continue to develop over coming years.
