May the AGI be with you... The more I hear about the details surrounding this, the stranger it gets. 2020s for you.

Open AI was quite literally at the height of its power after Dev Day. Everyone was excited and enthusiastic about the future of what they could accomplish next, and then in the span of a weekend it all collapses.

"Safetyism" is the greatest threat to progress atm. I doubt GPT-5 even would see release at this point.

Microsoft can survive without OpenAI: Nadella

Microsoft can stand on its own two feet if the multi-billion-dollar relationship with troubled artificial intelligence company OpenAI collapses, Microsoft chairman and CEO Satya Nadella says.

(Financial Review)
While Microsoft has become so “co-dependent” with OpenAI, its relationship with the company behind ChatGPT can now be likened to Microsoft’s “Wintel” partnership with Intel. That relationship made Microsoft what it is today, but it didn’t mean the software giant lacked AI software of its own to fall back on, Mr Nadella said.

Mr Nadella was speaking in response to questions from The Australian Financial Review last Friday – one day before news broke that OpenAI’s board had unexpectedly sacked CEO Sam Altman for not being ‘consistently candid’.

OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman also quit the company, as did three senior AI researchers. Moves to reinstate Mr Altman fell apart on Monday, and Emmett Shear, co-founder of video streaming site Twitch, was appointed as new interim CEO.

---------------------------------------------------------------

“It’s not like(OpenAI) would have been able to build (ChatGPT) without our systems,” Mr Nadella told the Financial Review on Friday, referring to the fact that, as part of a series of deals thought to be valued at more than $US11 billion ($16.9 billion), OpenAI runs its ChatGPT service entirely on Azure.

“In that eventuality, it’s easy enough. You always know how to stand up on your two feet,” he said.

Dozens of Staffers Quit OpenAI After Sutskever Says Altman Won’t Return

Nov. 19, 2023 10:29 PM PST

Dozens of OpenAI staffers internally announced they were quitting the company Sunday night, said a person with knowledge of the situation, after board director and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever told employees that fired CEO Sam Altman would not return.

The moves could hamper the company's ability to move forward after the shock firing. It also will likely change the course of the artificial intelligence field and embolden a host of rivals—namely Google—that have been seeking to hire OpenAI staff over the last 48 hours. Some OpenAI staff have indicated they would be interested in joining Altman if he started a new AI venture—something he was already discussing over the weekend.

(Update: These people may now seek to join Altman at Microsoft. CEO Satya Nadella said around midnight that he had hired Altman and former OpenAI President Greg Brockman to head up a new AI unit at the enterprise software heavyweight.)

PPS: Before I took the job, I checked on the reasoning behind the change. The board did *not* remove Sam over any specific disagreement on safety, their reasoning was completely different from that. I'm not crazy enough to take this job without board support for commercializing our awesome models.

The way I understood it (being pro-board) was that they sacked Altman because he wanted to monetize AGI. However, new guy seems to be no different in wanting to monetize the models, except for being a doomer.

Saw this post and asked Bing AI if Sam was following the core principles.

Bing: This is a difficult question to answer, as there may be different interpretations of the principles stated in the document. However, based on the information available from the web search results, I will try to give a brief analysis of Sam Altman's leadership in relation to the principles.

- **Benefit of all**: Altman seems to have been committed to the vision of creating AGI that benefits all of humanity, and not just a few powerful actors. He has advocated for the importance of safety, alignment, and cooperation in AGI development, and has supported initiatives such as the Partnership on AI and the OpenAI Startup Fund that aim to foster collaboration and diversity in the AI community. ¹²³
- **Fiduciary duty to humanity**: Altman has raised substantial resources for OpenAI, both from his own personal wealth and from external investors such as Microsoft. He has also donated $10 million to fund YC Research, a non-profit research lab that supports OpenAI's mission. ⁴⁵ However, some critics have questioned whether Altman's involvement in multiple ventures, such as Y Combinator, Reddit, and Microsoft, could create conflicts of interest or compromise his fiduciary duty to humanity.
- **Safe and beneficial AGI**: Altman has been vocal about the need to make AGI safe and beneficial, and has supported research on topics such as AI alignment, robustness, interpretability, and governance. He has also expressed concern about the risks of AGI becoming misaligned, malicious, or monopolized by a single entity.
- **Cooperation over competition**: Altman has stated that he would stop competing with and start assisting any value-aligned, safety-conscious project that comes close to building AGI before OpenAI. He has also said that he would be willing to share OpenAI's technology and insights with other researchers and organizations, as long as they adhere to the same principles and goals.
- **Cutting edge of AI capabilities**: Altman has led OpenAI to achieve remarkable milestones in AI capabilities, such as GPT-3, DALL-E, and Codex. He has also overseen the development of OpenAI's infrastructure, such as the OpenAI Scholars program, the OpenAI Microscope, and the OpenAI Codex Playground.
- **Broad societal impact**: Altman has recognized that AI will have broad societal impact before AGI, and has strived to lead in those areas that are directly aligned with OpenAI's mission and expertise. He has also explored the implications of AI for various domains, such as education, healthcare, economics, and politics.
- **Global community**: Altman has actively cooperated with other research and policy institutions, and has sought to create a global community working together to address AGI's global challenges. He has also participated in various events and forums, such as the World Economic Forum, the AI for Good Global Summit, and the AI and Humanity Symposium.
- **Public goods**: Altman has committed to providing public goods that help society navigate the path to AGI. He has published most of OpenAI's AI research, and has also shared safety, policy, and standards research. He has also created platforms and tools, such as the OpenAI API, the OpenAI Gym, and the OpenAI Spinning Up, that enable anyone to access and use OpenAI's technology.

In summary, Altman has shown a strong adherence to the principles stated in the document, and has made significant contributions to the advancement of OpenAI's mission. However, he has also faced some challenges and controversies, such as his abrupt firing from OpenAI, his involvement in multiple ventures, and his potential influence over AGI's deployment. Therefore, his leadership may not have been entirely consistent with the principles, and may have left some room for improvement.

OpenAI Staff Threaten to Quit Unless Board Resigns
Nearly 500 employees of OpenAI have signed a letter saying they may quit and join Sam Altman at Microsoft unless the startup's board resigns and reappoints the ousted CEO.

(Wired)
OpenAI was in open revolt on Monday with 490 employees threatening to leave unless the board resigns and reinstates Sam Altman as CEO, along with cofounder and former president Greg Brockman. Altman was controversially fired by the board on Friday.

“The process through which you terminated Sam Altman and removed Greg Brockman from the board has jeopardized all of this work and undermined our mission and company” the letter reads. “Your conduct has made it clear you did not have the competence to oversee OpenAI.”

Remarkably, the letter’s signees include Ilya Sutskever, the company’s CTO who has been blamed for coordinating the boardroom coup against Altman in the first place.

Shortly before the letter was released, Sutskever posted on X: "I deeply regret my participation in the board's actions. I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we've built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company.|
-------------------------------------------------------------------

I just get the sense that Ilya's trying to save his own ass at this point. Talks broke down earlier specifically because he couldn't reach an impasse at reinstating Altman. He understands where the wind is blowing.

If this were a Netflix drama, I'd criticize it for being too overdramatized. Yet reality turns out to be stranger than fiction.
You also informed the leadership team that allowing the company to be destroyed “would be consistent with the mission.”
What the actual f*ck is happening? It's hard to believe any of this is real, and the idea that this actually was because of AGI or something close to it isn't that much of a conspiracy compared to how irrational this has all been.
