Sir Paul McCartney says artificial intelligence has enabled a 'final' Beatles song
1 day ago
Sir Paul McCartney says he has employed artificial intelligence to help create what he calls "the final Beatles record".
He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the technology had been used to "extricate" John Lennon's voice from an old demo so he could complete the song.
"We just finished it up and it'll be released this year," he explained.
Sir Paul did not name the song, but it is likely to be a 1978 Lennon composition called Now And Then.
It had already been considered as a possible "reunion song" for the Beatles in 1995, as they were compiling their career-spanning Anthology series.
Sir Paul had received the demo a year earlier from Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono. It was one of several songs on a cassette labelled "For Paul" that Lennon had made shortly before his death in 1980.

Google StyleDrop generates images from text

It took Da Vinci 16 years to paint the Mona Lisa. Some say he needed 12 years just to paint her lips.
There is no truth to the rumors that slow Internet was the cause.
But Da Vinci, a polymath who dabbled in botany, engineering, science, sculpture, and geology as well as painting, surely would have appreciated a new text-to-image generative vision transformer developed by Google Research.
Google's StyleDrop, as described in a June 1 paper on the arXiv preprint server, lets users describe objects and specify artistic styles they wish to have incorporated in the generated output.
StyleDrop returns images reflecting the user's specifications in about three minutes.

It’s harder to make fire than you might think. But the Pixar team was determined to do the impossible.

It had a great new idea for a movie—Elemental, based on characters from The Good Dinosaur's director Peter Sohn—but actually animating the film’s titular elements was proving to be a problem. After all, it’s one thing to draw a crumbling mound of sentient dirt, but how do you capture the ethereal nature of fire onscreen, and how would a corporeal body made of water even work? Can you see through it? Do the eyes just float around?
While some of those questions could be answered with good old-fashioned suspension of disbelief, Pixar’s animators thought the fire issue was a real conundrum, especially considering that one of their movie’s leads, Ember, was actually supposed to be made of the stuff. They had tools to make a flame effect from years of previous animations, but when you actually tried to shape it into a character, the results were pretty terrifying, a cross between Studio Ghibli’s Calcifer and Nicolas Cage’s Ghost Rider, but somehow harsher.

Roughly even, but leaning towards MusicLM.
