The original 2017 transformer model was designed for natural language processing (NLP), where it achieved SOTA results. Its performance intrigued machine learning researchers, who have since successfully adapted the attention-based architecture to perception tasks in other modalities, such as the classification of images, video and audio. While transformers have shown their power and potential in these areas, achieving SOTA performance requires training a separate model for each task. Producing a single transformer model capable of processing multiple modalities and datasets and sharing its learnable parameters has thus emerged as an attractive research direction.

To this end, a team from Google Research, University of Cambridge and Alan Turing Institute has proposed PolyViT; a single transformer architecture co-trained on image, audio and video that is parameter-efficient and learns representations that generalize across multiple domains.

In his book the singularity is near Ray Kurzweil predicted we would have proto AGI in the mid 2020s.

"he expects human brain scanning to contribute to an effective model of human intelligence "by the mid-2020s"." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Singularity_Is_Near

To me this sounds like the foundation basic AGI that will soon be upgraded to human level AGI in 4 or so years exists aka proto AGI. He made this prediction in 2005 maybe earlier when the word proto AGI didn't even exist and the above is a Wikipedia explaination not even his own explanation so you have to read into what he has said.

This means if proto AGI is released in the mid 2020s we are on track for his human level AGI in 2029 prediction.

If proto AGI is released before the mid 2020s we could have human level AGI years sooner than 2029.

This makes me want to buy the singularity is near and learn about the specifics of his prediction.

"Games have a long history of serving as a benchmark for progress in artificial intelligence. Recently, approaches using search and learning have shown strong performance across a set of perfect information games, and approaches using game-theoretic reasoning and learning have shown strong performance for specific imperfect information poker variants. We introduce Player of Games, a general-purpose algorithm that unifies previous approaches, combining guided search, self-play learning, and game-theoretic reasoning. Player of Games is the first algorithm to achieve strong empirical performance in large perfect and imperfect information games -- an important step towards truly general algorithms for arbitrary environments. We prove that Player of Games is sound, converging to perfect play as available computation time and approximation capacity increases. Player of Games reaches strong performance in chess and Go, beats the strongest openly available agent in heads-up no-limit Texas hold'em poker (Slumbot), and defeats the state-of-the-art agent in Scotland Yard, an imperfect information game that illustrates the value of guided search, learning, and game-theoretic reasoning"

Ah so that's what that Grimes song was about. How cool!

Google is training multi modelity I think this and the many other recent google/deepmind AI updates are related to the ongoing construction of pathways. Through their promises and progress deepmind shows it does intend for pathways to be Proto AGI.

Last year I recall purchasing the ability to see Jeff Dean's talk about google pathways months before anyone else knew about it. I was then spamming like a schizo for much of 2021 posting about how Google pathways would be proto AGI.

So it is really nice to see google make progress on their pathways project.

How might this development effect proto AGI and human level AGI timelines?
