Japan and China major cut backs to medicine and biology?

Post by Lilymoon »

Is true Japan and China done major cut backs to medicine and biology? I know under Trump they cut founding to medicine and biology. But what about China and Japan?

The latest anti cancer research and stem cell research got cut the founding.

No, there is no clear evidence that Japan or China have implemented major cutbacks to funding for medicine, biology, or biomedical research comparable to the recent U.S. actions under Trump. The opposite trend is more accurate for China, while Japan shows relative stagnation in growth rates rather than sharp reductions.

United States context (for comparison)Under the Trump administration (particularly from 2025 onward in the available reporting), there have been significant actions affecting NIH and related biomedical funding. These include terminations or freezes of billions in previously approved grants (reports cite figures around $2–3+ billion across NIH/NSF, affecting thousands of grants), proposed large budget reductions (e.g., ~40% or more for NIH in some requests, later moderated), and other disruptions. Congress has pushed back in some cases with boosts or restorations, but uncertainty and actual cuts/freezes have impacted ongoing medical research.

ChinaChina has been increasing overall R&D and biomedical/life-sciences investment substantially, not cutting it back in a major way:China’s gross domestic expenditure on R&D has grown rapidly and, by some purchasing-power measures in recent OECD-linked reports, reached parity with or surpassed the U.S., with both countries crossing the $1 trillion threshold. China’s share of global R&D has risen steadily.

Biotechnology and life sciences receive consistent, generous public support (e.g., at least CNY 20 billion / ~EUR 2.6 billion noted for one recent year in the field), government guidance funds, subsidies for clinical trials, biomanufacturing academies, and prioritization in five-year plans and strategies (Made in China 2025 successors, Health China 2030, etc.).

Output metrics (publications, patents, clinical trials, out-licensing deals of innovative drugs) have risen sharply. Venture and deal activity in life sciences has shown resilience or growth in recent years, with strong state backing even amid some private funding fluctuations.

There is no prominent reporting of broad, major government cutbacks to medicine or biology research; the strategic emphasis has been on expanding capabilities and closing gaps with (or overtaking) the U.S. in key areas.JapanJapan maintains high overall R&D intensity (around 3.3–3.4% of GDP in recent data, among the higher OECD levels) but has seen slower growth rather than major cutbacks:Growth in R&D spending has been relatively flat/stagnant (average annual increases around 1% range in some longer-term views), with reliance on domestic funding.

Government plans (e.g., under the 6th Basic Plan and related initiatives) have allocated large multi-year sums (tens of trillions of yen in total R&D targets, including government portions), plus specialized funds such as a multi-trillion-yen universities-for-excellence program. Recent political developments have been discussed as potentially supporting modest boosts (e.g., to competitive grant schemes like Kakenhi).

No widespread evidence of sharp, major reductions specifically targeting medicine, biology, or agencies like AMED (Japan’s medical research funding body) equivalent to the U.S. NIH grant freezes/terminations.

In short, claims of “major cutbacks” do not hold for China (which is scaling up) or Japan (more characterized by high but slower-growing investment). Trends can shift with new budgets or economic pressures, but the recent pattern is not one of large-scale reductions in these areas.

What do you mean no cut backs for Japan but Japan is slower and stagnated?

How much does Japan spend compared to the US?

Can you please learn to post in the correct sub-forums? Nearly every time you come on here, you post so randomly.

I've moved this and your other thread. I've also renamed this one to something more specific.

I thought political stuff does not go in In The News & Current Events? I thought In The News & Current Events was only for articles not discussion of stuff or political stuff?

Also what is the Culture, Economics & Politics of the Future use for than? If my threads don’t belong in In The News & Current Events but Culture, but Economics & Politics of the Future if you not posting news articles?

Is it Culture, Economics & Politics of the Future for discussion where you not posting news articles? AND it can be more political?

We have an entire subforum for Business & Politics, so you could have posted it there.

Since the subject of this thread includes Biology & Medicine, I've moved it here.

In The News & Current Events can absolutely be used for discussions –– but focused mainly on present-day (or near-term) events.

Culture, Economics & Politics of the Future is more focused on stuff that's further out. Think medium-term (5-10 years), longer-term (10-50 years), or distant future (50+ years). Ditto for Science & Technology of the Future.

Off-topic is generally for non-science, non-technology, non-future subjects.
