Here is a reminder to everyone that monkeypox is not COVID-19. Monkeypox is both far less severe and far less fatal than COVID-19 is.

But does it have to be? Like, covid is still an ongoing pandemic, albeit a waning one. We're just sort of coming out of a two year period where it disrupted everything. The disruptions of that period are felt today in the shortages we're experiencing, never mind the furthering of domestic and international political tensions. Those shortages are being exasperated thanks to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Hopefully monkeypox turns out to be nothing and we've already more or less have heard the last of it and will have forgotten it by this time next month. But if monkeypox turns out to be just a little more than nothing, even if it's a very small sort of "mini-pandemic", that's just another blow to a world situation that's already in a somewhat frightening position. People are already warning that prices for food are going to get even worse, and that some people in third world countries are going to starve. And another variant of covid could still throw a small wrench into our recovery plans. You're right, and hopefully we'll be done fearing this next week, but right now you can't blame people for being worried about the possibility of another, however minor, pandemic being thrown onto an already kind of bad situation.

This is not known at the moment with the current strain. The West African strain has a CFR of 1% and tends to be most severe in younger people. In many ways this is a potentially bigger problem than COVID.

Biden Says 'Everybody' Should Be Concerned About Spread of Monkeypox

Source: The Guardian

National security adviser assures public that the US has a 'vaccine that is relevant to treating' virus. Joe Biden said Sunday that "everybody" should be worried about the spread of monkeypox recently, and his national security adviser assured the public that the US has a "vaccine that is relevant to treating" the virus.

During an official visit to South Korea, Biden told reporters, "They haven't told me the level of exposure yet but it is something that everybody should be concerned about." The president, who was speaking at Osan airbase, also added: "It is a concern in that if it were to spread it would be consequential."

Initially, Biden said the government was exploring what vaccine "if any might be available" to protect people against the virus. But later his national security adviser Jake Sullivan said the US had a "vaccine available to be deployed" against the monkeypox virus if necessary. Federal Centers for Disease Control officials have previously said that people who are exposed to monkeypox, which has a slow incubation period, can be given existing smallpox vaccines to limit the sickness' severity.

Biden's first remarks on the growing outbreak of the rare virus came a day after a senior adviser for the World Health Organization said the monkeypox seemed to be spreading through sexual contact and admonished that case numbers could continue climbing over the summer as people attended festivals and other major gatherings...

Jif Peanut Butter Products Recalled Due to Salmonella Outbreak
Source: CBS News
BOSTON -- Health officials are investigating a multi-state salmonella outbreak that has been linked to certain Jif peanut butter products made at the J.M. Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Kentucky. In the meantime, the company has voluntarily recalled a number of varieties believed to be involved.

Jif brand peanut butter that has lot code numbers 1274425 through 2140425 and the first seven digits end with 425 should not be consumed. For a full list of the recalled items, visit the FDA's website.

The FDA also recommends washing and sanitizing surfaces that may have come into contact with the peanut butter.

A total of 14 illnesses have been reported, including one in Massachusetts.

Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Older people, young children, and those with weakened immune systems can be more susceptible to severe illness.

Monkeypox likely spread by sex at 2 raves in Europe
Source: AP

By MARIA CHENG
LONDON (AP) — A leading adviser to the World Health Organization described the unprecedented outbreak of the rare disease monkeypox in developed countries as “a random event” that might be explained by risky sexual behavior at two recent mass events in Europe.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Dr. David Heymann, who formerly headed WHO’s emergencies department, said the leading theory to explain the spread of the disease was sexual transmission among gay and bisexual men at two raves held in Spain and Belgium. Monkeypox has not previously triggered widespread outbreaks beyond Africa, where it is endemic in animals.

“We know monkeypox can spread when there is close contact with the lesions of someone who is infected, and it looks like sexual contact has now amplified that transmission,” said Heymann.

That marks a significant departure from the disease’s typical pattern of spread in central and western Africa, where people are mainly infected by animals like wild rodents and primates and outbreaks have not spilled across borders.

This may soon qualify for its own thread, if case numbers start getting into the thousands.

Monkeypox cases rise as guidance advises infected to abstain from sex

Published

Another 71 cases of monkeypox have been identified in England over the weekend bringing the UK total to 179, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says.

New guidance is advising anyone with the virus to abstain from sex while they have symptoms.

They are also told to use condoms for eight weeks after an infection as a precaution.

The risk to the population is low, but people should be alert to new rashes or lesions, the UKHSA says.

In total, 172 cases have been confirmed in England, with four in Scotland, two in Northern Ireland and one in Wales.
