Taurine may extend life and health, scientists find

https://www.bbc.com/news/health-65810138

Taurine - a nutrient found in meat, fish and sold as a supplement - extends life and boosts health in a range of animal species, scientists say.

Levels of taurine decline with age in different species, including people.

Experiments on middle-aged animals showed boosting taurine to youthful levels extended life by over 10% and improved physical and brain health.

The researchers say taurine may be an "elixir of life" - but topping up levels in people has not been tested.

So the team, at Columbia University, in New York, recommend against people buying taurine pills or energy drinks packed with taurine in an attempt to live longer.

The animal research is, however, the latest development in the hunt for ways of slowing ageing.

We already synthesize taurine today though.

Negative Effects of Taurine
by Ryan Haas

Introduction:
(LiveStrong.com) Taurine, an amino acid, is used by the body for liver and brain functions. Your body produces taurine from metabolizing vitamin B-6, methionine and cysteine. Doctors may recommend taurine supplements for congestive heart failure, angina, cystic fibrosis and other respiratory and heart conditions. Many energy and sports drinks contain taurine.

Negative Nitrogen Balance

The main negative side effect associated with taurine supplementation is negative nitrogen balance. The University of Utah Health Care Center reports that consuming a single amino acid supplement like taurine can offset your natural nitrogen balance. This may lead to a decrease in your metabolic efficiency and a strain on your kidneys. Children taking taurine supplements may also experience stunted growth.

Drug Interactions

Research into drug interactions with taurine is sparse and inconclusive, according to the University of California San Diego. Some research points to chemotherapy drugs like ciplatin and fluorouracil affecting how well your body absorbs taurine. Though the long term and drug contraindications for taurine are not well known, you should still speak to your physician about possible complications from taurine supplementation before taking products that contain the amino acid.

Unsubstantiated Benefits

One of the primary drawbacks of taking supplemental taurine is the lack of research into its use and effects. Some studies indicate taurine may be useful for treating viral hepatitis, alcoholism, hypertension and multiple sclerosis, but researchers either did not perform these studies with strict controls or other studies contradicted the initial findings. Taking taurine to treat a condition without first seeking the consent of your physician is ill-advised and may lead to unintended side effects.

this is talking about taurine supplementation, not about taurine taken in from food sources aka meat. which sounds to me like a good argument for dietary intake of taurine for it's benefits without heavy dosing with supplements. lol.

Machine learning algorithm identifies 3 natural anti-aging chemicals
Researchers have developed a machine-learning model to identify chemicals that may combat aging

Researchers have used a machine learning model to identify three compounds that could combat aging. They say their approach could be an effective way of identifying new drugs, especially for complex diseases.

Cell division is necessary for our body to grow and for tissues to renew themselves. Cellular senescence describes the phenomenon where cells permanently stop dividing but remain in the body, causing tissue damage and aging across body organs and systems.

the tl;dr version is 3 chinese herbal medicines- a compound from oleander which is hard to get the dosing high enough to have effect but low enough to not poison you. periplocin from silk vine, and ginkgetin from ginko biloba. It seems like the last one is relatively easy to get in most places and frankly sounds like the safest option.

To meet that ambition we just have to have life expectancy grow just a bit more than the time that passes for the expectancy to grow in. that doesn't need to result in indefinite life span for those involved, or even that it applies universally across the population. or that the gain is persistent.

It's entirely possible that the life expectancy of the average first world country 5 year old will go up by 1.2 years, in a year. But the life expectancy of everybody else coasts by at 8 months per year or something. it could easily take decades longer to get adolescents and young adults past the 1 year per year mark, and it may never be possible to save the older folks, we'll just die out of the statistics while the first generation to reach escape ages into the top end of the cohort.

but the path doesn't have to be particularly smooth, with the possibility of decreasing infant mortality, resolving childhood disease, fixing accident and homocide rates, you can bunch some of those successes in a short enough time that it alters the life expectancy by more than a year in less than a year, but then you return to life expectancy increase rates dipping back down once all the low hanging fruit has been had.

a sustained increase that compounds over time may not happen for much longer, but we could dip our toe across that line a couple of times. And the result might be a very few of the ones who experience the first line crossings will reap enough benefit that they will be able to catch a ride when the line is crossed for good.
