ADHD and hunter gatherers

Post by andmar74 »

I got the idea this morning when I was out running:
Maybe at the time when humans lived as hunters and gatherers, it could be an advantage to have ADHD ( Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
I have a son who is 11 years old, with ADHD.
--Often he doesn't eat anything until the evening, even when put under pressure. That makes sense because hunters could go for days without catching anything.
--He is physically very active and doesn't need as much sleep as a "normal" kid.
--He can focus extremely well on things he is interested in, and not much else. That also makes sense when hunting.

I'm not the first one to get this idea. Wikipedia says Tom Hartmann, a radio host, first mentioned this "The hunter versus farmer hypothesis" in a book.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_ve ... hypothesis

This period of human history (hunting-gathering) occupies 90% of human history, so why wouldn't human brains evolve to adapt to this.

If true, this puts a whole new perspective on adhd, I would say.
